Indonesia or Malaysia???

Posted by olashi on 23/9/2011 at 12:15

Hi there - this may be a dumb question that no-one can answer for me, but I have to make a snap decision about whether to book flights to Indonesia or Malaysia for 3 weeks in December. Don't have time to do research and wonder which would be best for family of 5 (3 adolescent boys) on small-ish budget. We like less crowded places, to have a mixture of exploring towns and beach-time (good beaches as we are from NZ and quite spoilt in that way) and are happy travelling on local buses and trains ( ...

Simpati SIM on iPhone 3gs prob

Posted by CrankyCarrot on 3/9/2011 at 13:31

I bought and installed a Simpati SIM card in my iPhone 3GS, but to my great frustration I can't make outgoing calls. I can receive calls and I can send and receive text messages, but for some weird reason I get a fail message every time I hit dial. Yes, I have credit. Has anyone else had issues with Indo SIMs in iPhones. Mine is unlocked/JB'd and has worked fine with a number of Thai and Malaysian SIM cards. ...

Any solo travelers headed to the Gili Islands in 2 weeks?

Posted by wkarnes on 27/9/2011 at 16:54

Was hoping to stay on Gili T and learn to dive after hiking Mt. Rinjani. Noticed it was somewhat expensive for rooms. Just wanted to see if anyone was planning on heading there and wanted to split costs for a double bed room. I am 24/m, from the states. Easy to get along with I have no idea the exact date, but can plan something out if need be. Let me know if there is any interest! ...

Beautiful, remote beach in or around Bali? (scuba would be fab too)

Posted by freerangehuman on 26/2/2011 at 05:46

Hi there, I'm going to be in Bali for a while at the end of May and have 3 and a half days at the end to spend chilling out on a beach. I'll have been staying outside Ubud for the rest of the month so really looking forward to waking up to sand and waves for a few days! Does anyone have recommendations of places that are a) chilled and nice (not looking for the party scene) b) beautiful (white sands!) c) have some scuba facilities. I'm only looking to do the 3 day openwater part of the PADI ...

short trip to Bali in Oct

Posted by dardeb on 21/8/2011 at 20:52

After reading so much on SEA (this is my first trip to this part of the world), I finally decide to skip Thailand islands and go to Bali instead, 2nd or 3rd week of Oct. Now I'm reading Bali's beaches are not so pretty and clean, and weather in October is not always good. The more I read the more confused I get. Can you help me decide!? Is there swimming in October in Bali? Which part of the island has the best beaches for swimming? I don't like pools. I'll only have about 5 days there, I'm no ...

Win a full pass to the Ubud Writer and Readers Festival

Posted by somtam2000 on 7/9/2011 at 10:15

The smart cookies over at the Ubud Writer and Readers Festival (of which we're a sponsor) have given us a full 4-day pass to give away to a lucky literature lover. The four-day pass is worth A$350 and entitles the holder to experience all panel sessions in 3 venues across the four days of the festival from October 6 to 9, 2011 in Ubud, Bali. (It doesn't include the ticketed special events and workshops.) To win the pass, all you need to do is tell us in EXACTLY 25 WORDS what "Bali" m ...

Itinerary help - Tanjung Puting/Kelimutu/Komodos

Posted by prathab on 21/8/2011 at 22:52

Hi all My friend and I are looking to travel Indonesia from 5-21 September. The things we definitely want to do is see the orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park (TPNP) and the Komodo dragons in Komodo National Park. Hopefully we can also squeeze in some beach time, culture and Kelimutu into our trip. I'm having trouble trying to connect the dots in this itinerary. I have a lot of questions below, but from your past experiences if you can answer even a few then that would be great. Our fir ...

Indonesia or Thailand

Posted by helixusion on 10/9/2011 at 18:24

Just wondering how much money will a trip to Indonesia will cost me if I include Surabaya, Gunung Bromo, Lombok and Gilli islands in my itinerary. I had initially planned for a trip to Thailand, but the hordes of tourists, crowds and sleaze daunted me. Regardless, of a few negatives, Thailand is an awesome country to visit with a lot of stunning sights. But, I am looking for serene unspoilt seascapes and landscapes and I doubt that is feasible in Thailand. I asked a few backpacker friends of min ...

Magic Mushrooms?

Posted by CrankyCarrot on 3/9/2011 at 13:25

So I thought Indonesia was supposed to be ultra-tough on drugs. How come I see signs in plain site with things like "Yes, we have @#$%ing magic mushrooms here!" And can buy them over the counter at nearly every restaurant and bar in Kuta? Are "magic mushrooms" not hallucinogenic/illicit drugs? ...

From Kota Kinabalu to Balikpapan - How to do it?

I will be leaving UK around 14th Jan. I have thought of going to Kuala Lumpar for a few days and then flying to Kota Kinabalu. From there I would like to head from the Malaysian side across the border to Kalimantan and make my way via the west coast and down to Balikpapan to fly to Ujung Pandang. Pictures I have see of the island on Google map along with the wildlife which makes Borneo so famous means I really want to go (especially the saltwater and fresh lake of Labuan Cermin). However, do ...

2 Weeks in Java in Dec.: Yogya, Solo, and ?

Posted by glomer on 22/8/2011 at 08:09

Folks on this board were so helpful as I was planning our honeymoon in Vietnam/Laos last year, I thought I'd try posting again. I will be in Java in early–mid December doing some low-key family history/dissertation research. I will be based in Central Java (Yogya, Solo) and want to add one more destination, perhaps someplace quieter and more rustic. Interested in beautiful views, village life, walkable cities, good food, good architecture, pasars; not so much a volcano climber. May at times be ...
