Magic Mushrooms?

Posted by CrankyCarrot on 3/9/2011 at 13:25

So I thought Indonesia was supposed to be ultra-tough on drugs. How come I see signs in plain site with things like "Yes, we have @#$%ing magic mushrooms here!" And can buy them over the counter at nearly every restaurant and bar in Kuta? Are "magic mushrooms" not hallucinogenic/illicit drugs? ...

Posted by PeterJW on 30/8/2011 at 02:03

I will be leaving UK around 14th Jan. I have thought of going to Kuala Lumpar for a few days and then flying to Kota Kinabalu. From there I would like to head from the Malaysian side across the border to Kalimantan and make my way via the west coast and down to Balikpapan to fly to Ujung Pandang. Pictures I have see of the island on Google map along with the wildlife which makes Borneo so famous means I really want to go (especially the saltwater and fresh lake of Labuan Cermin). However, do ...

2 Weeks in Java in Dec.: Yogya, Solo, and ?

Posted by glomer on 22/8/2011 at 08:09

Folks on this board were so helpful as I was planning our honeymoon in Vietnam/Laos last year, I thought I'd try posting again. I will be in Java in early–mid December doing some low-key family history/dissertation research. I will be based in Central Java (Yogya, Solo) and want to add one more destination, perhaps someplace quieter and more rustic. Interested in beautiful views, village life, walkable cities, good food, good architecture, pasars; not so much a volcano climber. May at times be ...

Train ticket Jakarta - Yog - available on the day?

Posted by neila83 on 29/5/2011 at 20:16

hi, I'm travelling to Jakarta on June 14th, and am planning to go to yogjakarta the next day. I would prefer to go by train than plane (although flights are very cheap) so that I can see the scenery. My question is, since you can't book online, do you think I will be able to get a ticket at short notice, i.e. only the day before I want to go, or for the next day? Is it usually sold out or are there plenty available on the day? I need to know, because if it is possible I won't be able to get on ...

Best way to see a lot in little time? Homebase Bali - boat trip to Lombak, Komodo etc? HELP!!!

Posted by suzih on 2/8/2011 at 09:33

We have been to Bali many times and have an ex-pat brother who lives in Sanur. He now has a Balinese "family" and we are lucky to have experienced local family life in villages during ceremonials times. That being said, we have always left Bali and have traveled Asia - our brother has convinced us that we are missing out on the rest of Indonesia and I am ashamed to say after some research - he is right!!! The problem is there is so much to chose from and everything is amazing - what do ...

Please help! Travel route advice needed

Posted by travelinchen on 28/7/2011 at 19:40

Hey guys! We finally arrived in Yogya today and really like it so far. We"ll probably stay here for a week and then proceed o make our way towards Bali. We are hoping to arrive in Ubud on the 9th of August, and we are planning to leave yogya at the 4th. Inbetween, we would like to do Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen, then take the ferry to Bali. My questions: Do you think 5 days are a reasonable time to travel from Yogy to Bali with these two stops? And what do you think will be the least painful ...

Vaccinations for Java and Bali?

Posted by travelinchen on 15/7/2011 at 19:42

Now, I know it may be a bit late for this (we#re leaving in ten days), but would you recommend any vaccinations for Java, Bali and Gili Islands? So, we're basically planning a rather beaten track -- Yogya, Malang, Mt. Bromo, Ijen crater, coffee plantations around there, over to Bali, Ubud and around, then Gili islands. Would be great to hear from you! ...

Indonesia to Timor Leste overland

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/6/2011 at 05:40

Our good friend Theodora and her son have been busy motorbiking from Bali to Papua over the last month ago and she'll just penned a very useful howto guide for crossing the border from Indonesia to Timor Leste (East Timor) overland. If you happen to be heading that way, on- or off- motorbike, you'll find the post to be quite useful - as is the blog in general for travel in Indonesia. ...

Last minute advice for trip needed

Posted by travelinchen on 19/7/2011 at 19:36

Hi there, so, my partner and I now have about less than a week before we fly to Indonesia (traveling through Java and Bali, with a trip to the Gilis for a month). We are soooo excited, but of course also a bit nervous as this is our first time to Indonesia. We thought about a few questions which might sound silly to someone who's already been there, but would make our planning so much easier. 1. we previously thought that we don't need vaccinations or malaria tablets given that we'll only be i ...

Packing list for Java, Bali and Gili -- what do you think?

Posted by travelinchen on 20/7/2011 at 17:56

Hey guys, so, I decided to start a new thread here, since the topic is more specific than the one of my last post. I made a list of the stuff we're thinking of taking to Indonesia so far. Just a quick reminder, we'll be in Indonesia for pretty much a month, starting in Yogya, Mt Bromo, Ijen crater, overland to Bali, Ubud, then to Gili islands -- so pretty beaten track. It'll be our first time to I., so we'd be really thankful for any advice concering the packing list (what to add, what to leave) ...

I am thinking about heading to Southeast Asia for 4 weeks or so in December and January. I was looking for any good advice for everything on tips to island hop, hostels, border crossing within the region, and good dive sites. I know that the area is relatively inexpensive but what is a good price range to keep in mind for the explorers that have destined here. I perfer to stay off the beaten path and to stay in hostels or a hammock on the beach, (sorry to whom it concerns, but tourists with h ...

Bali for first solo trip ?

Hi all, I am planning to spend about one month in Bali in late august til mid september. As it is my first solo trip, i'm afraid no to meet anyone there, and i'd like to meet people doing the same trip. I planned to go to the main touristic places, but maybe not that much Kuta. I will spend also some times in Lombok or the Gili Islands, but i'm open to others destinations. What do you think about travelling alone for the first time in Bali ? I guess it is an easy trip, but still wondering ...
