Komodo and other islands + Labuanbajo West Flores

Posted by tezza on 9/6/2009 at 17:46

I spent some time in this area last month. Labuanbajo is surprisingly small for the main entry point, port, fishing town and tourist destination in West Flores. It stretches a few km along a bay and up the hillside. The main street is a disgrace - hot, dusty, rubbish and broken bits of pavement and road everywhere - often crammed with traffic - which is noisy - the locals like the open muffler set up on their vehicles (and boats). There seems to be more transport guys hassling for a ride than K ...

TRIP TO BALI

Posted by Nanatan on 7/3/2011 at 16:43

Hi, We have 22 adults and 7 kids planning to go Bali during June for 4 days 3 nights. We thought of staying at Blue Point Bay Resort around Uluwatu. Guess we have such a big group that the resort is unable to provide with the airport transfer. 1) We are finding alternative for the accomodation. Any resorts or villa which can cater such a big group and it is not too commercialise? 2)Does anyone knows any company which provide coach services that cater for such a big group? 3) Any good and relia ...

Solo beach break over Xmas/NYE--Lombok/Gilis?

Posted by missmck on 24/3/2010 at 19:48

Hi all~ I'm in the early stages of planning a trip over Christmas/NYE this year, for about 2 weeks. I really just want a place to unwind and let my hair down a bit--lay on a beautiful beache/exploring/snorkeling during the day and enough of a 'scene' at night to keep me from being lonely without being outrageous or requiring anything other than flip-flops. I don't need fancy accommodation, but would prefer some sort of bungalow versus a junky hotel room. BTW, I'm 28 y/o female, likely trav ...

Working in South East Asia

Posted by sarah7196 on 14/4/2011 at 14:56

Hi Everyone My partner and I are planning a trip to SEA and we really wanted to stay for around 9 months (Just enough time for Oz to come into Spring) but after researching travel costs and day to day living it isn’t even remotely achievable on our tiny budget (£3000 each – who were we kidding) soooooooo we are going to take a course called TEFL so we can teach in SEA. I was wondering if anybody knows of any useful websites/links that will help us get jobs, Does anybody know roughly how mu ...

Hi, Me an my girlfriend are going to Bali next week and we are looking for somewhere good to get some surf lessons and stay somewhere that is not too crowded, as I hear Kuta is. Can anyone recommend a good location to base ourselves for a few days and any good surf schools? We are also thinking about doing some trekking in Rinjani national park on Lombok. Can anyone recommend any good trekking companies? ...

Perama boat sinks off Komodo

Posted by somtam2000 on 29/3/2011 at 21:13

Story this morning of a Perama ferry that sunk off the coast of Komodo overnight. I'm not up on all the details, but you can read reports from people who were on the boat here and here and here. It seems nobody drowned, but there are some very very wet people, lost bags (and perhaps some stolen gear). Perama (the boat operator) has apparently less than helpful, but it does sound like weather was terrible and that the captain was trying to escape into a sheltered bay, but failed. I'm not sure wh ...

3-4 weeks: Sulawesi/Flores?

Posted by amz155 on 2/3/2011 at 08:40

We are currently debating between either Malaysian Borneo or Sulawesi/Flores for a 3-4 week trip this September. It'll be our honeymoon but we are okaying with roughing it. We visited Java, Bali and Lombok last year so do not need to see those areas again yet. Our main goals are to see nature/wildlife (Borneo/Mulu Park vs. Kelimutu/Rinca/Komodo), culture (Iban longhouses vs. Tana Toraja) and beach bum/snorkel (Perhentians/Tioman vs. Bunaken?Togians? area around Lubuanbajo?) Does anyone have a ...

What is a cheap ticket to Indo? When should I buy a ticket?

Posted by hawaiirunner on 9/3/2011 at 04:18

Aloha, I am new to this forum and website. My boyfriend and I are planning a 3 week trip to Indonesia in August. We are hoping to leave around August 1st and be back around August 27th. I have been looking at tickets online and the cheapest I have found is about $1100 through China Southern. I am not for sure if I should go ahead and buy this ticket or wait to see if prices drop. Any suggestions? Is it too early to buy a ticket? Is this a good price? Will prices drop? The only problem with the ...

Airline ticket to West flores then Lombok

Posted by swag on 22/2/2011 at 10:45

Hi all, planning to have a 2 1/2 weeks quick trip to W.Flores for some diving then the Gili's in early to mid June. Question is relating to getting local airline tickets.I understand Transnusa has a daily morning flight out of Denpasar, but I'm getting conflicting info on the return flight to Mataram in Lombok. I was hoping to fly from LBJ in Flores to Lombok but it seems I might have to go via Denpasar. If anyone can shed some light on if this info is correct or how I can arrange to buy ticke ...

Pelni travel: a few questions.

Posted by ianintheworld on 11/3/2011 at 22:59

I would like to try travelling around Indon without flying, so this means Pelni. I have read some sad stories of ekomi class (or however, it is spelt), but have read that 1st class is fairly comfortable. I have looked at the prices, which are ok. Any thoughts on this? Also security for my stuff. I travel with 2 bags, but with a computer and of course my documents and cards. How safe would they be on a Pelni? If I had a first class cabin would they be ok? I sound like a bit of a wuss, but I am t ...

Nature as dry as Thailand/Laos?

Posted by freaktom on 1/3/2011 at 19:53

Hi guys, for 15 months weve been travelling trough Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and the north of Thailand. The dry season in SEA can be seen everywhere, its dry, hot, foggy during the day and the nature looks like autumn in europe. We saw many beautiful places but it seems that we are satisfied. Instead of spending too much time in the north of thailand (coz the waterfalls arent flowing, not interested in hiking here, ...) we were thinking of flying to sumatra or sulawesi. Doe ...

Jewelry Workshop Review: Studio Perak in Ubud, Bali

Posted by cisdeluca on 2/2/2011 at 18:57

At Studio Perak in Ubud, Bali, you can take a 3 hour silversmithing and jewelry making workshop. The studio provides each student with 5 grams of silver to craft a pendant or ring and the expertise of a great instructor named Nyoman. When I went last week, I was very pleased with the experience. Upon arrival, we were given the opportunity to browse their shop to choose a design to replicate from their pre-existing items. Instead of trying to design my own piece, I decided to replicate one of the ...

Flights to Bali: best option coming out of Cambodia?

Posted by smillertime78 on 12/2/2011 at 12:04

Hello! I plan to meet a friend in Bali around March 14 and will be traveling from Cambodia. Does anyone have any experience as to finding the best/cheapest flight from Phnom Phen to Bali? I assume I would need to transfer in Singapore, but is there any airline that will book all the way, or will it be easier/cheaper to book separate flights? Looking into it, but wasn't sure if anyone had any ideas Thanks! Sarah ...
