One more question! I'll be in both Thailand and Singapore before I fly to Bali and was wondering if one is better than the other for getting a tourist visa. I've heard that the queues are very long for visa on arrival. Is the cost the same? ...

Traveling Sumatra alone

Posted by itamar on 9/10/2010 at 19:10

Hi, I've read on the lonely planet that traveling alone in Sumatra (even for males) isn't perceived positively. Is that true? would it be an issue to travel Sumatra alone? Also - Any other islands/beaches except Pulau Weh for crisp white sands and snorkelling experience in Sumatra? Thanks! ...

Amed, Bedugul and Tanah Lot

Posted by MiaBritton on 24/11/2010 at 22:09

Hi, My fiance and I are heading to Bali in January for 9 days. I've been to Bali many times as a kid so I have an idea of where to go and what to do, but would love any suggestions. Can anyone suggest places to stay in Amed, around Bedugul and Tanah Lot? Under $20, not worried about a/c or pools! Preferably near to or on the beach in Amed. Is it worth staying a night around Bedugul, or just stopping on the way to or from Amed? Also- have a reservation at Bakung Sari in Kuta (Jl. Singosari)- has ...

I'm looking for a good guesthouse a Bali

Posted by jamesinoz on 19/11/2010 at 06:06

Hi, New to the site here. I'm looking for a good guesthouse in Bali and would like some recommendations please. I'd clasify myself as a flashpacker and would like a room or a good bungalow with air-con and private bathroom. Wifi would be great. I don't mind paying extra for the wifi if it is a good connection, but I've read elsewhere that wifi on bali isn't very good. True? I realise Bali is a big place, but am unsure where to stay, I don't mind a beach (Kuta I guess - that is the only one I've ...

Between Bali & Kuala Lumpur...few days!

Posted by smillertime78 on 15/11/2010 at 00:01

Hello! A friend is planning to meet me in Bali and travel to Kuala Lumpur after; she has a total of 2 weeks between the destinations. (She will likely meet me 3/15 or 3/16, and my exit flight is fixed from Kuala Lumper to Melbourne on 3/30, although I could likely change days). We would like some serious time in Bali (maybe 7 days?) and I was thinking between 4-5 days in Kuala Lumpur, but we were trying to maybe hit up something in between for a few days. Couple of questions: 1) Is this possibl ...

Yogyakarta/Java - Mt Merapi

Posted by AlainaRae on 7/11/2010 at 22:58

I leave for Indonesia next week with a start in Bali and am supposed to be taking the train through Java to see Mt Bromo and then to Yogyakarta before catching a boat near Jakarta. However, with so much going on with the eruption of Mt Merapi I am wondering if the trains are still running and if I need to skip over Java and Sumatra and catch a flight straight to Singapore or stick with my original overland route. Having a tough time finding info on the local situation. Does anyone have any ...

Dear All, I will spend a 2 months in Hanoi this summer, but I would also love to visit Bali (or any other Island in the neighbourhood) - unfortunately, a quick search reveals that the plane tickets from Hanoi to Bali are extremely high in July (~1000eur/2people/2ways). CGK Airport Jakarta

Posted by dooryardroses on 25/9/2010 at 10:59

My husband and I will fly to Jakarta in a week, and have an overnight layover before our connection to Jogyakarta the following afternoon. Our flight to CGK doesn't arrive until 11:30pm, and hotel options in the area seem to be few and far between (not to mention expensive!). I'm dreading the idea of negotiating with airport taxi drivers for a longride into the city at night, just to sleep in a crappy hotel for acouple of hours. Does anyone have experience staying in the airport overnight? E ...

Indonesia in 4 weeks

Posted by travelback2basics on 18/9/2010 at 10:01

hi there We've got only 4 weeks in Indonesia left and try to figure out where we want to go. We will come from Penang (Malaysia) and will cross the border to Medan (Sumatra). We are really keen to go snorkeling in the north of Sumatra (Pulau Weh). After that we love to see active vulcanoes and would love to catch a surf somewhere, where it's not too crowded and where it's not too difficult for beginners. So for now, we are thinking of going for a surf to the Nia Island (Sumatra) and after t ...
