17,000 islands -- now that really is a lot of sand
I leave for Indonesia next week with a start in Bali and am supposed to be taking the train through Java to see Mt Bromo and then to Yogyakarta before catching a boat near Jakarta. However, with so much going on with the eruption of Mt Merapi I am wondering if the trains are still running and if I need to skip over Java and Sumatra and catch a flight straight to Singapore or stick with my original overland route. Having a tough time finding info on the local situation. Does anyone have any ...

My husband and I will fly to Jakarta in a week, and have an overnight layover before our connection to Jogyakarta the following afternoon. Our flight to CGK doesn't arrive until 11:30pm, and hotel options in the area seem to be few and far between (not to mention expensive!). I'm dreading the idea of negotiating with airport taxi drivers for a longride into the city at night, just to sleep in a crappy hotel for acouple of hours. Does anyone have experience staying in the airport overnight? E ...

hi there We've got only 4 weeks in Indonesia left and try to figure out where we want to go. We will come from Penang (Malaysia) and will cross the border to Medan (Sumatra). We are really keen to go snorkeling in the north of Sumatra (Pulau Weh). After that we love to see active vulcanoes and would love to catch a surf somewhere, where it's not too crowded and where it's not too difficult for beginners. So for now, we are thinking of going for a surf to the Nia Island (Sumatra) and after t ...

Hi, The ever so helpful people at my guesthouse have thrown away my contact lens container. I have the lenses but nothing to put them in. So far, I have been able to improvise but I need to replace the container or find an alternative with a screw-top lid. Indonesia next year -- and 20 years ago
Posted by escampur on 20/7/2010 at 17:10Hi there, I shoestring-backpacked round Indonesia (Timor, Flores, Sumbawa, Lombok, Bali, Java and Sumatra) 20 years ago and would like to return next year for a 4-week holiday with my husband and 4 kids, preferably to Lombok and Flores. My main question is: can anyone tell me how much the country has changed since then (infrastructure, technology)? Would you recommend doing the shoestring version as we did 20 years ago (we are avid [tent] campers and don't need much luxury other than a cool man ...

Travelling in Sumatra....the safe way?!
Posted by katieflorence on 9/11/2009 at 21:57Hi everyone, I actually posted this same query on tripadvisor about a week ago but not had any response - hopefully you nice travelfish people will be more helpful! I'm hoping to visit Sumatra whilst travelling through south east asia early next year, and the places we're keen to visit are Pulau Weh, Bukit Lawang, and Danau Toba. However I'm a bit concerned about how to travel around, as the Lonely Planet seems to suggest that it's dangerous/not recommended for tourists to travel down ...
