Borneo and Bali

Posted by bird2468 on 5/1/2010 at 16:06

Hi All My friend and I have been traveling around South East Asia for the past 2 months and are due to go to Australia on 18th January. Due to some serious overspending we are considering cutting Oz short and extending our time here. We wondered if it is possible to fly from KL to Borneo then on to Bali before returning to Singapore for our flight to Australia. Also, given this a fairly new idea we know very little about Borneo and could do with a few tips on how much time we'd need the ...

Posted by dpquinn on 8/11/2009 at 23:16

Hello there Myself and a friend are currently putting the finishing touches to a new website which aims to eventually be the best English-language resource for information on hiking/climbing the many mountains/volcanoes across the archipelago. We've listed every peak with 1000metre prominence and plenty more which are smaller but are so interesting they simple could not be left out. To an extent, the initial success of the site will rely on comments and photos/route descriptions from readers b ...

Mosquitos in indo/Bali

Posted by christay2009 on 3/11/2009 at 16:46

My first night in Bali was okay, you can't judge anywhere that well on one night (unless it's at either extreme-amazing/terrible). However, I have managed to count more than 30 mosquito bites all over me including my fingers, back, legs, feet, eyebrow, stomach, neck, armpit... Essentially everywhere I was wearing repellant during the evening ad slept under a net. I am not sure I can take another ravaging of this kind. It does seem like there are loads of the buggers around. Anyone else ...

Hi all, Never been to Bali before (going in Jan)and have heard numerous stories about locals taking your luggage while you are waiting to get your visa then charging extortionate amounts for it. Heard someone at work the other day say one demanded $20AUD! Whats the situation? How is it best to avoid it without any conflict? Sorry if i sound like a noob but that would be a situation that would really get me annoyed and probably end up with me telling them where to go...which i don't t ...

Noordin Top confirmed dead

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/9/2009 at 19:11

Indonesia's most wanted Islamist militant, Noordin Mohammad Top, was killed in a police shoot-out in Central Java, police said on Thursday. You can read more in the NYTimes story here. It seems unlike the rumoured death a while back, this time they actually got him. Unfortunately as Sidney Jones of ICG says, it is far from over: "It's a major success for the police but it doesn't mean, unfortunately, that the problem of terrorism is over. It's still unclear how many people were in N ...

Overland from the Gilis to West Flores

Posted by tezza on 10/6/2009 at 16:32

The islands east of Lombok in Indonesia are pretty strung out, and some of them quite big - so it’s no surprise that a lot of people use aircraft to jump between places of interest. Of course this means missing a lot of local sights and having little interaction with everyday locals - anyway that’s what I told myself last month when I decided to surface-travel between Lombok and Labuanbajo in West Flores to pick up a Perama Cruise back west. I bought me a through-buses/ferry ticket from ...
