Japan: An introduction Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/1/2013 at 00:26

Even Tokyo, its high-tech, thriving capital, is cloaked in an impenetrable Japanese culture that no amount of Starbucks can destroy. In almost all ways, this is a good thing. Travellers can experience authentic Japanese culture throughout the country. However, it also means that very little English (or other language) is spoken or written, and navigation and comp ...

Japan itinerary

Posted by theresaaowens on 5/5/2017 at 08:04

We are planning a trip to Japan in the beginning of June. My husband and I are travelling with a 10 and 14 year old. We are interested in both the culture and landscape of Japan. I am afraid this itinerary may be too much but would love to hear some thoughts. We plan to have the JR pass. Arrive in Tokyo in the afternoon of day one, spend 2 days in Tokyo Go to Jigokudari on day three in evening and spend the night, visit the onsen, then head to Hakone. Do the free pass in Hakone (cable car, ropew ...

Prepaid SIM in Narita?

Posted by Kmcgregor1 on 12/2/2017 at 22:40

Hi, I'm travelling to Japan this Friday for 11 days and will be arriving around 7pm. Is it possible to buy a prepaid SIM at Narita airport? Anyone done this and remember how much they paid? I only want to access maps, whatsapp and check places to go when I'm out and about. I also was reading about pocket WiFI, is this generally cheaper than a prepaid SIM? Can I rent one at Narita airport? Appreciate any help on getting connected when I arrive. Many thanks Kayleigh ...

Suggestions so far have included Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Miyajima and Yuzawa - which are all at the moment just a jumble in my head! Look ...

Onsen Ryokan between Tokyo and Kyoto?

Posted by grak88 on 6/8/2014 at 00:08

Does anyone have any recommendations for a ryokan with an onsen? Going to be travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto so anything cool along the way would be appreciated. I'm looking for a more traditional one. Modern is fine but I would rather not stay in one that is like a hotel. Price wise, I'm willing to splurge if it super duper awesome but I don't believe something has to be expensive to be awesome. Thanks! ...

Here's what we have so far: ...

I'm looking for nice beaches and good water activities i.e. kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. I'd like to do some diving, ideally I'd like to find some kind of dive and accommodation package. Hi For along time I've been looking for a place to start my life over, never figured out how to live modern life, never been outside my country, heard a lot of stories about places in the east you could volunteer, eat and live with Buddhists/monks while practicing meditation and finding your serenity. I know Google can't help find a place like this but maybe you can. If you know a place like this (preferably as far and remote as possible) maybe not just in japan but in all of Asia, please share ...

Apartment or Hotel in Tokyo - First visit to Japan

Posted by sunbell79 on 4/3/2014 at 22:50

We're headed to Japan next month and are seeking advice on accommodation. Our first three nights will be spent in Tokyo and we currently have an apartment and a hotel room booked in the Shinjuku area. The apartment is slightly less expensive, but we're concerned about wanting the help of hotel staff, given the fact that we don't speak Japanese. We're generally not the types to need help from a concierge, nor do we book with organized tours. We might want help booking a dining reservation, or wi ...
