Always a tourist favourite in Asia, Japan's mostly homogenistic society has made it something of a mystery to outsiders for centuries. Even Tokyo, its high-tech, thriving capital, is cloaked in an impenetrable Japanese culture that no amount of Starbucks can destroy. In almost all ways, this is a good thing. Travellers can experience authentic Japanese culture throughout the country. However, it also means that very little English (or other language) is spoken or written, and navigation and comp ...

I am planning a short trip to Okinawa between now and the end of September.
I was reading a bit about transportation on the "main island", it seems that everybody hires a car, does anyone here have any related experience? Do you really need a car to get around, or can you just make use of public transportation?
Also, I would like to go snorkeling at one of the other islands, any recommendations? I really would like to see turtles:-).
Thank you! ...

I'm travelling to Japan this Friday for 11 days and will be arriving around 7pm.
Is it possible to buy a prepaid SIM at Narita airport? Anyone done this and remember how much they paid?
I only want to access maps, whatsapp and check places to go when I'm out and about.
I also was reading about pocket WiFI, is this generally cheaper than a prepaid SIM? Can I rent one at Narita airport?
Appreciate any help on getting connected when I arrive.

Any tips from those who have been there? We'll be travelling with two kids (8 & 9) and am thinking of covering perhaps a half dozen destinations in all. Suggestions so far have included Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Miyajima and Yuzawa - which are all at the moment just a jumble in my head!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a ryokan with an onsen? Going to be travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto so anything cool along the way would be appreciated. I'm looking for a more traditional one. Modern is fine but I would rather not stay in one that is like a hotel. Price wise, I'm willing to splurge if it super duper awesome but I don't believe something has to be expensive to be awesome.
I'll be traveling to Tohoku on the first week of January with my 73 year old father (fit and loves to walk) - we'll be going to Yamagata, it's our first time up north, so I don't know the area, and I'm having trouble finishing up our itinerary.
We're travelling on a 7 day rail pass, leaving from Kansai and returning to Kansai -

Hi all. I'm heading to Japan for 3 weeks end of October. I would like to spend a week on the south islands Kerama Islands or Miyako-Jima (open to suggestions). I'm looking for nice beaches and good water activities i.e. kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving. I'd like to do some diving, ideally I'd like to find some kind of dive and accommodation package. For along time I've been looking for a place to start my life over, never figured out how to live modern life, never been outside my country, heard a lot of stories about places in the east you could volunteer, eat and live with Buddhists/monks while practicing meditation and finding your serenity.
I know Google can't help find a place like this but maybe you can.
If you know a place like this (preferably as far and remote as possible) maybe not just in japan but in all of Asia, please share ...
I love Travelfish and I'm happy to see it's venturing into more counties in Asia. I lived in Japan for the 9 years and would be happy to answer any questions I can.
