Favourite place in Laos? Sticky!

Posted by BigRoss on 23/5/2009 at 23:17

This is a post with very little practical value. Laos is my favourite place in the whole world, and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that. I wonder which places in the PDR are other people's favourites? I have two I can't split: The Katamtak waterfall and Mr Boune Hom's Bungalows on Don Dhet. The falls are really not very impressive compared to some, but they are so deserted and such a bugger to get to, that being there is really quite special. Certainly you've proven your trail bike riding ...

Hi all, If you have done the Huay Xai - Pakbeng - Luang Prabang boat trip by slow boat, please post in this thread when you did it and a rough idea of how many people were on the boat with you. This is to give other readers who are weighing up doing the trip an idea regards to overcrowding on the boat. As always, my humble thanks! ...

Posted by cig on 20/10/2008 at 15:05

Hi, what a fantastic website! have been reading non-stop. Heres my dilema... I will have 26 days to explore Thailand and Laos in Jan, I especially would like to see much of Laos. I start off in Phuket ( Islands/beaches etc) will take overnight train to Bangkok. Then off to Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya, then an overnight trip to Chiang Mai. I would then like to spend a good amount of time going through there and into Laos. And finishing up by taking the train from Vientiane to Bangko ...

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End Sticky!

Posted by christay2009 on 23/11/2009 at 02:45

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End I travelled around Northern Laos for just under a month from the 29th September onwards, moving fairly slowly south through Laos beginning in Luang Nam Tha and ending in Vientiane. This is more about information than sharing stories of my trip. Border Crossing I travelled from Kunming (capital of Yunnan province, China) to Mengla, where buses run to the border and beyond. There is a direct, overnight sleeper bus [more than one] from Kunming to M ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. Laos rental car for LP to Sam Neua

Posted by mtnmichelle on 5/1/2019 at 13:54

Has anyone on here rented a car to drive the road between Sam Neua and Luang Prabang? We’d like to check out Plain of Jars, Nam Nern night safari and the Pathet Lao caves. I know there is public transport but we rented a car for eastern Thailand in October and it was awesome to just drive ourselves around at our own pace. I’ve found rentals out of LP for $25/day which is not horrible. Please don’t respond back about how bad the drivers are, believe me we know, I just want to know if driv ...

Lao Airlines or Lao Skyway?

Posted by jackiestewart on 1/9/2018 at 10:59

Hi All- My husband and I will be flying from Luang Prabang to Vientiane mid week in November, immediately before That Luang. I know Lao Airlines is well regarded but I haven't found a great deal of info regarding Lao Skyway. The price differential is enough to consider Lao Skyway if it is reasonably reliable and safe - what do you think? In case it is relevant, we are experienced older travelers who understand that travel isn't always completely smooth or timely but want to be sure ...

8-10 Days North Laos

Posted by kimct on 6/8/2018 at 05:43

Hi Everyone, I shall be travelling to Laos beginning of December with my partner for about 8-10 days and arriving in Luang Prabang . I would really appreciate some feedback on where to go! Firstly a bit about us... this is not our first time to Asia and we are quite active travellers enjoying both cycling and hiking. What drew us to Laos was mainly the landscape and the fact that is has not yet been over developed. Im finding it difficult to decide whether to just travel up north from Luang P ...

Massive flooding & dam collapse in Southern Laos

Posted by somtam2000 on 24/7/2018 at 03:59

The Xepian-Xe Nam Noy dam in Attapeu province has reportedly collapsed after torrential rain in much of Laos. There are reports of massive flooding and hundreds of people missing in the area. Separately Konglor Cave near The khaki is also closed and there are videos of extreme waterflows in waterfalls around Luang Prabang. Please exercise care and keep the above in mind with plans for onwards travel. I'll update this thread as more news comes in. Best ...

Hill tribe reference book recommendation?

Posted by dkosh on 12/4/2018 at 20:58

will be in Northern Laos next Feb on an independent trip with car and driver, visiting many different hill tribe villages of different ethnicities. Can anyone recommend any reference books detailing customs, dress, particulars of the different tribes? As an anthropology major in college 40 years ago and knowing many Hmong who have resettled here in California, I feel my visit would be improved if I could know a little background information before we go ...

Help with plan please, Chiang Mai to LP - then what?

Posted by Dreamer33 on 4/4/2018 at 18:27

Hi there, my friend and I (both older women 55and 64 but experienced travellers in the distant past) booked flights to Chiang Mai from NZ some time ago, with flights back home from Saigon 3 weeks later. However, due to ill health of my daughter I have been going to cancel trip and stopped all planning. Now I suddenly realise I can actually go and the trip is less than a month away and I haven't actually planned anything except that I wanted to get slow boat from Huay Xai to LP because it ...
