2 weeks in Laos on my own?! Sticky!

Posted by cig on 20/10/2008 at 15:05

Hi, what a fantastic website! have been reading non-stop. Heres my dilema... I will have 26 days to explore Thailand and Laos in Jan, I especially would like to see much of Laos. I start off in Phuket ( Islands/beaches etc) will take overnight train to Bangkok. Then off to Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya, then an overnight trip to Chiang Mai. I would then like to spend a good amount of time going through there and into Laos. And finishing up by taking the train from Vientiane to Bangko ...

The Laos slow boat thread Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/1/2008 at 16:28

Hi all, If you have done the Huay Xai - Pakbeng - Luang Prabang boat trip by slow boat, please post in this thread when you did it and a rough idea of how many people were on the boat with you. This is to give other readers who are weighing up doing the trip an idea regards to overcrowding on the boat. As always, my humble thanks! ...

Favourite place in Laos? Sticky!

Posted by BigRoss on 23/5/2009 at 23:17

This is a post with very little practical value. Laos is my favourite place in the whole world, and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that. I wonder which places in the PDR are other people's favourites? I have two I can't split: The Katamtak waterfall and Mr Boune Hom's Bungalows on Don Dhet. The falls are really not very impressive compared to some, but they are so deserted and such a bugger to get to, that being there is really quite special. Certainly you've proven your trail bike riding ...

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End Sticky!

Posted by christay2009 on 23/11/2009 at 02:45

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End I travelled around Northern Laos for just under a month from the 29th September onwards, moving fairly slowly south through Laos beginning in Luang Nam Tha and ending in Vientiane. This is more about information than sharing stories of my trip. Border Crossing I travelled from Kunming (capital of Yunnan province, China) to Mengla, where buses run to the border and beyond. There is a direct, overnight sleeper bus [more than one] from Kunming to M ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have to ...

Dilemma: Luang Nam Tha or taking more time south?

Posted by CyrilCarton on 22/10/2016 at 23:06

Hi, First time post. Already had a great time reading all the info on Travelfish! Our dilemma: should we go for about 2-3 days to Luang Nam Tha (that's about 5 transport included) or should we spend some more days in the middle/southern part of Laos? We are a couple who likes hiking and interact with the local people. We took the slow boat and are now about 3-4 days in Luang Prabang. We still have about 10-15 days in Laos to spend (before we go to Cambodia) and also want to go south of La ...

Bus travel in Laos

Posted by chrisfish on 6/8/2016 at 09:22

Hello! I am planning a trip to Laos and Cambodia for myself and two friends in November. We will have three weeks, and I have an itinerary largely planned, and am booking hotels - don't want to have to run around looking for a hotel on arrival when we only have a limited time. My question - is it realistic to expect to be able to turn up in say, Vientiane , and be able to book a bus out to Vang Vieng two days later for three people? November is obviously quite peak time. If you think we ...

Motorbike from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

Posted by philip81 on 10/10/2016 at 09:13

Hi all, I've looked long and hard to find some answers to the following questions but so far unsuccesful. I hope someone(s) here can address one or more of our concerns. We (my girlfriend and I) will be traveling through Laos for a couple of weeks soon, and as part of this we want to do a motorbike ride from LPB to Vang Vieng , and back. Now I noticed everyone seems to drive Route 13 over Phou Khoun (this route), which we're planning to take for the drive back from Vang Vieng to LPB. For dr ...

Intend on traveling from Lao then into Vietnam and wondering if this is going to be the same - proof of onward journey? Planning on traveling fora about 3 months and only have sketchy plans . Any advice and assistance gratefully accepted. ...

Savannakhet to Si Phan Don

Posted by blvdve on 12/8/2016 at 15:52

Husband and I will be spending 5+ weeks in Northern Thailand and Laos this November, and I have a vague itinerary planned that includes, during the last ten days, a few nights in Savannakhet (guesthouse booked) and then a few more nights on Don Khone (likewise), with just the one day to get between the two. I assume that we must first get to Pakse and then travel onwards. Has anyone done this journey, with advice to offer? Is it complicated getting from arrival in Pakse to departure > 4 ...

Great website, have been referring to it for past few months during our travels. Have trawled through various online sources but few up to date, would appreciate any guidance on this! ...

Sending Mail from Laos

Posted by tlm44 on 23/1/2009 at 08:36

I just wanted to let everyone know what happened to my box of souvenirs I sent home from Laos. The box was open and most of my stuff was taken. Interestingly enough it was all the stuff that had anything to do with the countries - had the name on it - tshirts, bracelets, scarves, my lonely planet (which was in there by accident), an $90.00 silk dress, I am not even sure what else. I sent it thru the official post office. Just a warning for everyone. ...

Nam Nern Night Safari helps tigers back from the brink

Looking to get off the beaten track, support a worthy cause and perhaps spot furry creatures? Read on. "Suddenly the torch is trained like a laser to a single spot; that’s the signal. We turn on our own torches and point. The glow is unmistakeable. There in the brush is a sleek feline body and two yellow orbs shining back at us. It is a civet. I shiver. I’ve been on safaris before but never one where spotting an animal is so important." Cindy Fan for The Australian. ...

Another attack on the new road between Kasi and Luang Prabang

"Second Lieutenant Santhi, a soldier who died during the attack, was from Nanh district’s military division, said one of his relatives who declined to be named and did not provide the soldier’s surname. The assailants shot Santhi dead while he was walking in front of the other soldiers, the relative said, adding that he didn’t know if the soldiers were in pursuit of the gunmen." These attacks are really starting to add up in number and are very concerning. You can read the full ...

Report: Bolaven culture, nature, and hiking without guide

Posted by TheWilds on 9/5/2016 at 10:04

Hello fellow travelers! We are two outdoorsy people with about six months of traveling behind us and we just spent six days motor biking around the Bolaven plateau. We discovered a few great places along the way that we wished we'd known about sooner, so we thought we'd share. You do not need six days, but two may not be enough if your goals include hiking and spending some time with locals like ours did. Note: the prices are what we paid and may change for many reasons. Travelling the length of Laos

Posted by sketchinbawlz on 7/5/2016 at 23:28

Hi, First time post. Website is great resource. Heading for the first time in Asia, from Thailand into Laos in June 2016, doing Luang Prubang, V.V, Vientiane and than want to do Don Det - I know opposite end of the country. Is their anyway to get down there without means of airport. Save me having to go back and around to Cambodia and up to Don Det of which I'd have to pay another visa fee. Open to any ideas, don't mind long hauls. Thank you in advance. ...
