The Laos slow boat thread Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/1/2008 at 16:28

Hi all, If you have done the Huay Xai - Pakbeng - Luang Prabang boat trip by slow boat, please post in this thread when you did it and a rough idea of how many people were on the boat with you. This is to give other readers who are weighing up doing the trip an idea regards to overcrowding on the boat. As always, my humble thanks! ...

Favourite place in Laos? Sticky!

Posted by BigRoss on 23/5/2009 at 23:17

This is a post with very little practical value. Laos is my favourite place in the whole world, and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that. I wonder which places in the PDR are other people's favourites? I have two I can't split: The Katamtak waterfall and Mr Boune Hom's Bungalows on Don Dhet. The falls are really not very impressive compared to some, but they are so deserted and such a bugger to get to, that being there is really quite special. Certainly you've proven your trail bike riding ...

2 weeks in Laos on my own?! Sticky!

Posted by cig on 20/10/2008 at 15:05

Hi, what a fantastic website! have been reading non-stop. Heres my dilema... I will have 26 days to explore Thailand and Laos in Jan, I especially would like to see much of Laos. I start off in Phuket ( Islands/beaches etc) will take overnight train to Bangkok. Then off to Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya, then an overnight trip to Chiang Mai. I would then like to spend a good amount of time going through there and into Laos. And finishing up by taking the train from Vientiane to Bangko ...

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End Sticky!

Posted by christay2009 on 23/11/2009 at 02:45

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End I travelled around Northern Laos for just under a month from the 29th September onwards, moving fairly slowly south through Laos beginning in Luang Nam Tha and ending in Vientiane. This is more about information than sharing stories of my trip. Border Crossing I travelled from Kunming (capital of Yunnan province, China) to Mengla, where buses run to the border and beyond. There is a direct, overnight sleeper bus [more than one] from Kunming to M ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have to ...

Hill tribe reference book recommendation?

Posted by dkosh on 12/4/2018 at 20:58

will be in Northern Laos next Feb on an independent trip with car and driver, visiting many different hill tribe villages of different ethnicities. Can anyone recommend any reference books detailing customs, dress, particulars of the different tribes? As an anthropology major in college 40 years ago and knowing many Hmong who have resettled here in California, I feel my visit would be improved if I could know a little background information before we go ...

Help with plan please, Chiang Mai to LP - then what?

Posted by Dreamer33 on 4/4/2018 at 18:27

Hi there, my friend and I (both older women 55and 64 but experienced travellers in the distant past) booked flights to Chiang Mai from NZ some time ago, with flights back home from Saigon 3 weeks later. However, due to ill health of my daughter I have been going to cancel trip and stopped all planning. Now I suddenly realise I can actually go and the trip is less than a month away and I haven't actually planned anything except that I wanted to get slow boat from Huay Xai to LP because it ...

No more boat travel between Nong Kiaow and Muang Khua

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/11/2017 at 15:10

Very sad to see the rough between Nong Kiaow and Muang Khua being cancelled thanks to yet another dam in Laos. "Eliminating the popular Nam Ou river cruises will disappoint many tourists, as the boats provide the best way to experience the natural beauty of northern Laos from a relaxing river perspective. These trips will now be replaced by bus transports, following a road that weaves through valleys, occasionally skirting the river, but in places forced by the terrain to make wide div ...

Question on Long Boat trip out of Luang Prabang

Posted by TanyaCollins on 5/10/2017 at 10:57

My husband and I would like to do a long day trip to see the scenery and maybe stop at a village or possibly overnight in a village north of Luang Prabang on the Mekong River. We have seen various tours but all seem to be overly touristic with contrived experiences viewing the locals do their “ craft”. We enjoy seeing how rural people live and make their living but are not keen on performances. Any suggestions ?Also which village would you recommend staying in and where? ...

How much time to spend in Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng

Posted by Jugurtha on 25/9/2017 at 23:21

Hello, our family 2 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 9 will be travelling to Laos and Cambodia in January. We fly into Vientiane and out of Luang Prabang. We prefer quieter towns where we can walk or ride a bike with not too much traffic and fun/interesting things for the kids to do. Kids love exploring, animal encounters and swimming. We would appreciate any suggestions in amending the below itinerary, whether re-allocating time at destinations to leaving destinations off to avoid too muc ...

We will be starting in LB and than heading north - Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi, Phongsali. Is it really and issue in this area at that time or we should definetely try to move - say - 2 weeks earlier (could be a bit difficult)? Your kind info will be greatly appreciated.
