Three corners of north Laos Phongsali, Sainyabuli, Hua Phan

Posted by somtam2000 on 31/1/2010 at 11:42

I'm off on a short jaunt through some of Laos in Feb/March. Will be visiting Phongsali , Sainyabuli (particularly Hong Sa for the pachyderm party) and Hua Phan. These are all fairly little visited and off the main traveller trail. If anyone will be in the region and would be keen to meet up for a couple of iced BeerLaos, let me know. Plan wise I'm looking at entering via Huay Xai, then Xieng Kok and LNT, Hong Sa, Phongsali (some backing and forwarding) then across to Hua Phan prov, then ...

Huay Xai, to Muang Sing

Posted by wombatfuz on 25/1/2010 at 14:48

Any buses going from Huay Xai to Muang Sing ? Or do I have to take the bus to Luang Nam Tha , then transfer to another bus to Muang Sing? I read some posts about the Gibbon experience but that is not in my plan. I was planning on Huay Xai to Muang Sing to Luang Nam Tha to Udomxai, hoping not to have to backtrack. ...

Phongsali Extreme

Here's the hook. " when I arrived, I already felt as a stirring "electric" in the village. Many are drunk. A woman dancing alone, barefoot on the mud, it seems "elsewhere", as in a trance. In some places there are altercations, some even fought violently with blows from fists and logs. And a gun. Everything went very quickly A woman screamed, a man too. A shot was fired. The woman was shot. She fell in the mud. The bullet went through his neck, blood spreading on the wetland. It screams, it ...

Flights into Laos- Best way?

Posted by Karlap on 3/2/2010 at 11:15

Hello! I will be in Chiang Mai around the 19th of March and am planning on heading to Luang Prabang. Unfortunately I do not think I have the time to take the slow boat and I'm a bit afraid of the fast boat. With that said- I was wondering if anyone has experience with booking flights to Luang Prabang. I have looked up the price on the Laos airlines website. Would it be best for me to book in advance through the website or is it just the same to book while I am in Chiang Mai. Does a ...

Locally owned accommodation in LP

Posted by indiansummer on 20/1/2010 at 19:49

Hi all, Firstly, thanks for all the information in this forum, which has been so useful to me in planning my trip. I'm going to be in Luang Prabang for a few days in mid-Feb and am looking to book somewhere to stay. I've seen a lot of nice looking mid-range places but a lot of them seem to be owned by foreigners - I was wondering if any of you could recommend some nice places that are Lao-run and owned? I'd much rather put my money into local hands! Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!! ...

Does a flight still exist between Pakse and Siem Reap?

Posted by Dkirzner on 23/1/2010 at 14:08

Hi there, I have found a flight from Pakse to Siem Reap on the Siem Reap airlines website (also advertised on the homepage) - however I am unable to book it as you cannot go through the booking process (i.e. you cannot click on the listed flight). Bangkok airlines is no better (it does say on the SR airline website that you can book there too). Does anyone have any idea if this flight is still available? The airport is supposedly now open (1st of November). Any hinters would be gre ...

Iterinary Issue from Chiang Mai - LP

Hi folks, I just have a quick query, basically I will be arriving in Chiang Mai on the 7th of February, and would like to do a day's trek after which I would like to move on to Luang Prabang as soon as possible. 1. Is it possible/better to leave Chiang Mai on the 7th night or 8th morning? 2. When could I expect to be in LP and consequently Vang Vieng by? 3. Is it realistic booking a flight from Luang Prabang on the 12th to Hanoi as we only want to do a day's tubing. I woul ...

After nearly 300km on a motorbike me and my mrs arrived here today. Its basically not very good is it? Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to visiting the Plains of Jars, and the ride here was LOVELY, but apart from that and some nearby hot puddles, I'm not impressed. ...

Two weeks in SE Asia

Posted by ponarv on 31/12/2009 at 01:39

Hello, my wife and I have two weeks off and would like to travel in two of the following countries...Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. I know each destination has different things to offer, but given our time constraints, I'm wondering which two would be the best. For example, I have heard it generally takes a longer time to get from point A to point B in Laos. We looking to combine some "on the go" sight seeing with a few days down time lounging at a resort/nice hotel at the end. Also, any opinions a ...

Advice needed on routing from Bangkok to Vang Vieng.

Posted by johnplawlor on 19/1/2010 at 18:49

So I and some friends plan on leaving Bangkok on Thursday evening or Friday morning (04/05-03-2010) and flying from BKK to Udon Thani . Then getting a limo-bus from Udon Thani to Vang Viene. I think you need to go via Vientiane but I'm trying to get to Vang Viene as quickly as possible. I have to be back in BKK on Monday afternoon so I would need an early flight back from Udon Thani to BKK. Assuming I can get there on the Thursday and get back on the Monday morning I would have three full day ...

Need to figure out how to spend 10 nights

Posted by Bear on 13/1/2010 at 01:37

Hello all, After spending some time in the Thai islands, my husband and I will have 10 nights to get ourselves to Siem Reap for our departure flight. (He'll be continuing his 6 week trip. I'll be going back to work.) Based on my research so far, we will probably want to split those 10 nights amongst 2 cities/towns/areas. We've never been to SE Asia before, so this is all new to us. We enjoy hiking, cafes, historical sites, food, and meeting locals and other travelers. Not so much into ...
