Laos in Nov-Dec tentative schedule

Posted by pamjane on 23/6/2009 at 12:59

My girlfriend and I will be traveling from Thailand>Laos>Cambodia for a couple of months at the end of the year. I've figured out the first part of the "maybe" course to take, but I'd love input from people who know Laos. Also, I get quite confused when I get to the south, because I'm running out of days... so that's where my plan is halted at the moment. This is my first time in SE Asia, and my first time planning independent travel, so any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. ...

Footwear for hiking in Northern Laos in wet season

Posted by saxomophone on 20/6/2009 at 18:11

I've looked around on the site and ethe recommendation that sandals are sufficient for hiking in northern Thailan/Laos etc but that was in relation to wet season. I'm wondering whether to purchase either some proper hiking boots or a pair of those quasi hiking boot cross trainers I've seen around. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. ...

Hi there, This is just my third post, but forum is incredible! So much great info on here! Anyway, my girlfriend and I have two weeks to spend and I just drew up a rough itinerary using information from various posts on Travelfish and the Laos section of the site (as well as Lonely Planet). The places of most interest look like Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Plain of Jars. We are also interested in doing some trekking, perhaps for 2 days or so. Where would be a good place to fit it i ...

Hi everyone, I just posted this on the Vietnam board too, so you might want to post there to make things a little neater ( My girlfriend and I have about 2 weeks to travel, and would like to see Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. I know there's not enough time to see all 3 places and we want to make the best use of our time. Due to time constraints, we have to arrive on July 12th and leave on the 25th. Hey all, Firstly, I have been to Laos before during a 3 month tour of SEA. So I am aware of places, and time it takes to travel etc etc. This year I am going on holiday with my girlfriend to show her what she missed when I went away. I have a couple of questions regarding travel. We are going to be there for about 2 full weeks We fly in and out of Bangkok. The plan is to either just do North Laos, or spend a couple of days in the south just to scoot about the Bolaven Plateau on bikes, a ...

Visiting the villages around Luang Prabang

Posted by xontros on 11/6/2009 at 22:41

I would like to know if it is possible for someone to visit the villages around Luang Prabang without booking a tour and if this is worth it/recommended. I realize that it is easier to visit some villages (eg the whisky village or the village across Mekong). But what about the ones that the companies promote as hilltribe village tours? ...

Walking from Vientiane to Luang Prabang

Posted by rossville69 on 29/10/2008 at 14:39

Hi, I'd just like a little feedback on a plan I have: I really like to walk, and I was thinking p erhaps of walking from Vientiane to Luang Prabang or, as that may take too long, at least from Vientiane to Vang Vieng (I'll only be in Laos for 11 days). However, I really don't know if it's a good idea. As far as I can imagine, the problems with this idea can be: * Security: walking alone may expose me to theft/being waylaid, harassment from bribe-seeking police, or just common-place viole ...

Posted by franegt on 30/5/2009 at 16:48

Hey there, Basically my friend and I are going to Laos for about 10 days. It would seem the places to see are Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Plain of Jars. Of course, if there are any other suggestions, that'd be great. Pakxe (sp)? I've heard of that. I don't think my friend or I will do tubing as to put it simply, I'm not a fan of beer and I don't think my friend wants to anyway. We arrive in Vientiane. I see it would be easy, kinda, to go up north via VV and finally LP..bu ...

Gibbon Experience- hear its good but is it really worth 160 euros?

Posted by lexitaylor on 3/6/2009 at 21:56

Hi I'm looking at doing the gibbon experience on the 20th or 21st of June! I was originally looking at doing the classic experience but have been quoted 160 euros (170 if bought in huay xai close to the time) for the classic or the waterfall! To me, this seems like an awful lot of money, especially given I'm british, and our exchange rate with the euro has in recent years gone from £1: 1.6 euros to £1:1 euro! I was wondering if it would be sensible to give the gibbon experience a miss and save ...

Laos in April: new year worth the smoke and heat?

Posted by shrub on 6/1/2009 at 10:46

Hey, great site going here. Fascinating, informative and well laid out. I'm disembarking on a two-month trip trough Thailand and Laos with my girlfriend starting in March and ending with April. Basically, each country gets roughly a month: Thailand in March and Laos in April. This site describes March to May in Laos as "unbearable" and "yuck!" due to the rice stubble burning and intense heat. However, the much recommended Lao New Year takes place sometime mid-April. So my questions are: d ...

Help - Thailand to Vietnam Itinerary

Posted by brutus123 on 9/6/2009 at 09:53

Hi, I have read many posts on this website and they have been absolutely fasinating to say the least. What a great site. Anyway my questions are related to travelling across Laos in late September/early October from Huay Xai and entering Veitnam by flying into Hanoi (the options by land appear to time consuming and I don't want to spend endless hours on the bus). The itinerary for the 4 of us is currently shaping up like this; 1. Travel to Muang Sing stay o/n and following day h ...
