Posted by juls101 on 16/8/2009 at 19:12

Hi, This is my first solo trip through indochina and I am pretty excited to kick it off in laos in October. I do not know much about what is possible though (feeling a little bit clueless at the moment) altho reading other posts is definitely helping. Can you please advise on what would be a good route to see the south and north of laos in 2.5 - 3 weeks and whether I should consider taking any flights etc.? Any advice, criticism etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. So far this is what I am ...

Tha Khaek & Southern Laos

Posted by Intrepid82 on 22/4/2009 at 13:45

I'm considering whether to make a trip to Tha Khaek and other parts south of Vientiane when I am in Laos in Nov/Dec. So far my plans for Laos were focussed mainly on the north but am interested in seeing some parts of the south, which I am told are a little less 'touristy'. Is this really the case? If so can anyone tell me what are the must see's in this part of the country? I am definitely on the look-out for the "authentic" Laos experience i.e sleepy villages and beautiful scenery.. ...

Laoz without Borders

Posted by somsai on 16/8/2009 at 23:52 Great Video I think the guys are chefs back wherever they come from, I like the opening scene where they make monitor lizard laap. From a reply on another web site it seems they made 5 different dishes from the lizard, the undercooked laap was from the blood and some organs. Proabaly Sua from some of the meat and a gaeng from the juices of cooking the meat but that's all just a guess. Notice how they put the thing in the fire then scraped the scal ...

Gibbon Experience to Nong Khiaw

Posted by hc75 on 12/8/2009 at 18:48

Hi, I'm planning to do the Gibbon Experience in December and would like to travel to Nong Khiaw after that. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best (quickest) way to get there? I gather after you finish the Gibbon Experience you can catch a bus to Luang Nam Tha from the nearby village rather than going back to Huay Xai , but how long does this take and is it possible to go on to Udomxai in the same day? Alternatively I could go back to Huay Xai and bus it to Luang Prabang, but ...

Nam Phao/Cau Treo VS Dansavanh/Lao Bao

Posted by soQQuadro on 4/8/2009 at 06:50

Ciao everyone, I'm planning my big SE Asia trip and wondering at this tricky point.Initially I wanted to cross from Laos into Vietnam through the Nam Phao/ Cau Treo, as I'll be staying only in northern Laos, but I'v read that is not the best crossing I revisited my plan and now I'm going all the way to Savvannakhet only to do the other border crossing. Is it sane/wise? which one is relatively easyer and quicker??? I appreciate your saying as I have kinda limited time in each country so ...

Champasak to Don Dhet by Boat

Posted by angfonz on 4/8/2009 at 16:34

Has anyone done this trip? We will be spending quite a bit of time on the bus between Vang Vieng and Pakse, and would like to make this leg via boat. Green Discovery Laos quoted me $190 dollars for a 12 person boat, but we don't need anything nearly that size (traveling with 2-3 people). They said the journey takes 5-6 hours, which is fine, but we don't want to pay nearly that much. If I just show up at the Champasak peir and organize one myself will I be riding on some semi floati ...

Independent travel or organised tours

Posted by Intrepid82 on 27/7/2009 at 06:47

I am planning my first trip to SE Asia at the end of the year...planning on seeing Cambodia and Laos. I can take up to three weeks. After spending what seems like an eternity finding an organised tour that went to all the places I want to see, I am very frustrated to find that the tour will not be going ahead due to a lack of numbers. My dilemma now is do I just go off on my own, and maybe take a couple of short tours in places such as Angkor Wat & Luang Prabang, or should I compromise and ...

Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang - Minivan Hire

Posted by dclayw on 23/7/2009 at 08:51

Anyone know the current rate for hiring a minivan from VV to LP. I've read one recent story of 900,000 kip and that was for 11 people. I think that sounds quite reasonable, would you agree? I asuume the rate is always for the van, not per person, so the cost will be the same for 1 person or for 11 people? Does the hire rate go up much during peak season Dec-Jan? Is it possible to hire a taxi in VV for the trip to LP, there will be 4 of us. What would the cost be? And it appears the trip f ...
