First time to Laos

Posted by jamespool on 14/10/2008 at 17:56

I'm planning my first trip to Laos at the moment, great site! I'm going at christmas and have three weeks there. I know I want to see the gibbon place, Muang Sing and Loung Phabang and I'd like to do a boat trip as well. I don't plan to go to the south, but am looking for two other places to fit into my trip. I like smaller places, but ones that get a few travellers, but not loads. I don't want to go to Vang Veang. I like to travel slow. If you could only go to two places in laos where wou ...

Laos homestay?

Posted by mattocmd on 14/10/2008 at 21:36

Hello, I read somewhere about staying with families in Laos for $2 a night or so. My girlfriend and I will be in Laos in Feb. and I think this would be an excellent way to spend some of our time. I would love such a cultural experience. So how do you do it? Just show up at some houses? Learn enough Lao to ask the locals? If anyone has done this please let me know... Thanks! ...

Vientianne to Hanoi - Flights??

Posted by lauraandmark on 16/9/2008 at 20:26

Hi, I am thinking of flying to Hanoi from Laos and was wondering if anyone knew a rough price for vietnam airways as the website isnt much help? We are flying in december. Is it easier and cheaper to book whilst in Laos or do the flights get very busy/more expensive nearer the time? If it looks to expensive we may reroute to avoid 24hours on a bus - any ideas for a different route? Thanks ...

flying to Luang Prabang

Posted by kangourousse on 14/9/2008 at 23:15

Hi all, I was wondering if it's possible to fly from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. It seems like the bus takes the whole day and is unreliable and I only have just over a week in Laos, want to spend most (or all) of that time in and around Luang Prabang. I'll be arriving from Kuala Lumpur. If I can't fly from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, would it be best to fly from KL to Bangkok and then catch a flight from there to LP? Thanks, Kangourousse. ...

Place to Rest Up

Posted by Karimster on 30/9/2008 at 19:00

Moto accident means that my original plans for Laos are probably not a goer - not keen on trecking and staying in places of questionable hygiene while I'm scabby. Unfortunately this has necessitated a reassessment of my budget for Laos, but y'all might be able to help out by advising on: I was keen to visit some of south Laos, going from Pakse to the Islands via Champasak. My original plan saw this as a rushed 2/3 nights using local transport. I can still to Wat Champasak as a day trip from P ...

Carrying cash in Laos

Posted by queanbeyan on 27/9/2008 at 17:50

Hi I have been to Laos a few times now - but never for as long as 4 weeks like I am planning next month. I was wondering how other people carry cash for such a long time. I am mainly going to be in northern Laos - and I know that ATMs are few and far between. I plan to stay at guesthouses - and eat local food - but even with a minor budget - there is a need to have some cash. What do others suggest would be a reasonable amount to take for 4 weeks - how do you look after it? I dont want ...

Going by moto all the way?

Posted by chaos23 on 23/9/2008 at 03:23

As I heard and read, some travellers buy motos in vietnam and go all the way round in nam, laos and cambodia. I am thinking about doing the same in Laos. Has anyone experiences with that kind of travelling? Is there a possibility to buy a bike in Vientiane and resell it in Pakse? Or maybe to rent it? ...

Final boarding call for North Laos

Hi This is a repeat message from a few months ago - sorry to bore you to tears but I am hoping to get a travel buddy!! I am a 44 year old male from Canberra Australia and I will be travelling solo in North Laos from October 8 to November 4 2008. I speak Thai and Lao (not fluent but 20 years experience so quite reasonable). Hi yes you can use your EFTPOS/CIRRUS card in the South. BUT beware, it is vary hard to sell your LAOS kip to buy back Thai Baht or dollars... it is not on the world currency exchange and no bank will accept it, also at the border the exchange places are often closed or do not want your kip. we still have about 1million kip in Sydney - anyone want to buy it off us? Wat Phou in a day from Pakse?

Posted by devonsongbird on 15/9/2008 at 02:59

A warning to other travellers: Our trusty Footprint guide told us it was possible to visit Wat Phou in a day trip from Pakse. We did manage it but getting back was tricky and I really do not advise it! We took the 9.00 a.m. songthaew from Pakse and a tuktuk from Champassak. No problem. However, re getting back we were told in Champassak that the thing to do was to get out to the village at Km 30 (the T junction) and there would be buses along the main road. There weren't. They only go through in ...

Is Lao-Airlines safe?

Posted by alemauro on 8/9/2008 at 02:48

Hi there! I am getting quite concern about one advice read on the LonelyPlanet: "Safety records for Lao Airlines aren´t made public, and many international organizations and Western embassies advise staff not to use this airline" I have found that there is a flight from Luang Prabang to Hanoi by Lao-Airlines..... being a good choice for my trip. I don´t won´t to go vientiane to get to Hanoi.. and I am planning traveling from Hanoi back to Battambang visiting Vietnam and Cambodia. 01) ...

Local markets / food in Luang Prabang?

Posted by travellingtwo on 3/9/2008 at 20:05

Hi all - Well, we've landed in LPB on our bicycles and after a week of hanging out in all the out of the way places, now we're wondering how to escape 'the bubble'. I know, I know.... shouldn't be here in the first place if it's not your thing but anyway. Must be a local market around here somewhere, where we can grab a simple bowl of rice soup and maybe an iced coffee in the morning? Can anyone give directions? I also see references to a morning food market (not sure if it's very touristy ...
