Final boarding call for North Laos

Posted by queanbeyan on 24/9/2008 at 16:16

Hi This is a repeat message from a few months ago - sorry to bore you to tears but I am hoping to get a travel buddy!! I am a 44 year old male from Canberra Australia and I will be travelling solo in North Laos from October 8 to November 4 2008. I speak Thai and Lao (not fluent but 20 years experience so quite reasonable). I have been to Laos a few times before and I know my way around but I would like to find some people to travel with (male/female any age is OK). I plan to fly from ...

Hi yes you can use your EFTPOS/CIRRUS card in the South. BUT beware, it is vary hard to sell your LAOS kip to buy back Thai Baht or dollars... it is not on the world currency exchange and no bank will accept it, also at the border the exchange places are often closed or do not want your kip. we still have about 1million kip in Sydney - anyone want to buy it off us? I'll give you a great rate! ...

Wat Phou in a day from Pakse?

Posted by devonsongbird on 15/9/2008 at 02:59

A warning to other travellers: Our trusty Footprint guide told us it was possible to visit Wat Phou in a day trip from Pakse. We did manage it but getting back was tricky and I really do not advise it! We took the 9.00 a.m. songthaew from Pakse and a tuktuk from Champassak. No problem. However, re getting back we were told in Champassak that the thing to do was to get out to the village at Km 30 (the T junction) and there would be buses along the main road. There weren't. They only go through in ...

Posted by kwinzent on 30/7/2008 at 23:02

I am planning a trip in December to either Laos or Cambodia. We will be leaving from Beijing and need to end our trip in Saigon. We were hoping to do both but in the interest of time and money I think we're going to have to choose between either Laos or Cambodia. We will have abot 2-3 weeks for travel and are looking for cultural experience and adventure. Any suggestions would help as we are completely torn between the 2. ...

Is Lao-Airlines safe?

Posted by alemauro on 8/9/2008 at 02:48

Hi there! I am getting quite concern about one advice read on the LonelyPlanet: "Safety records for Lao Airlines aren´t made public, and many international organizations and Western embassies advise staff not to use this airline" I have found that there is a flight from Luang Prabang to Hanoi by Lao-Airlines..... being a good choice for my trip. I don´t won´t to go vientiane to get to Hanoi.. and I am planning traveling from Hanoi back to Battambang visiting Vietnam and Cambodia. 01) ...

Local markets / food in Luang Prabang?

Posted by travellingtwo on 3/9/2008 at 20:05

Hi all - Well, we've landed in LPB on our bicycles and after a week of hanging out in all the out of the way places, now we're wondering how to escape 'the bubble'. I know, I know.... shouldn't be here in the first place if it's not your thing but anyway. Must be a local market around here somewhere, where we can grab a simple bowl of rice soup and maybe an iced coffee in the morning? Can anyone give directions? I also see references to a morning food market (not sure if it's very touristy ...

Itinerary suggestion for 2 weeks in North Laos

Posted by Mopop on 8/9/2008 at 14:43

Hi, I am going to Luang Prabang on 10th December, and back on 28th Dec. I would like to stay 5 days in LP to explore the town and the surronding areas. Where should I spend the other 13 days? I would like to see villages, and not rush around too much. I have excluded the usual LP - Vang Vieng - Vientiane route. I am considering instead some of these options; -> From Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw, from there to Sam Neua and then back through Phonsavan to Luang Prabang or -> From Luang Pra ...

Girly matters in SE Asia.

message for girls really - sorry boys. Tampons in Vang Vieng and 4000 islands - very hard to find, so best be prepared and have some with you. If you like to use self-tanning products to cheat a bit until you build up a real tan. Take these with you as you cannot buy them in Thailand, Cambodia or Laos, as fair skin is highly prized in these countries and there is no market for these products. There are plenty of places in most beach areas for waxing or threading. On Sihanoukville b ...

beware of Aroon Residence Hotel in Vietiane if you are BLACK!!

Posted by blackskin on 18/8/2008 at 17:14

Hi everybody, I just came from a short trip in Vietiane, Laos and had a terrible experience with RACISM at the hotel I stayed. I stayed at the Aroon Residence Hotel, Ban Hatsady Nue, Chantabouly District. When I was checking out I asked the manager how much was the equivalent of the 39 US fee in Laos Kip. He became angry when I told him that the rate he quoted was more than the going rate. He told me to pay and get out with my BLACK SKIN. It was really violating. Be careful of that hotel if ...

Vientiane flooding

Posted by Dongphuvieng on 15/8/2008 at 11:32

A quick note to report that Vientiane is suffering its worst flooding since 1923. That means the water has broken the banks of the Mekong and riverside areas are under some water. Places further east are affected more seriously than the riverfront area in the centre of town. So if you're in Vang VIeng or Luang Prabang and thinking of having an extra day before you come to Vte, it's not a bad idea. ...
