Vote for the Ecotourism Laos website

Posted by Dongphuvieng on 1/8/2008 at 13:51

If any of you have used the www.ecotourismlaos.com website, you'll know it provides loads of great info. It has recently been nominated for the 2008 Planeta Ecotourism Spotlight Award, which recognises government sponsored websites that support ecotourism and responsible travel. If you'd like to support it, just go to to http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/tour/awardspotlight.html to cast your vote - the other sites aren't bad, either. Cheers, DPV (I have no affilitation with the website) ...

vientiane to LP- By motorbike, bus, plane?

Posted by maliamaui on 1/8/2008 at 13:01

We would like to travel from vientiane to LP and stop in Vang Vieng for a couple of nights. We thought of renting a motorbike that GreenDiscovery will supposedly pickup for $40 or so. Has anyone done that road by motorbike and know how long it takes? My husband is from Buenos Aires and is experienced on a motorbike but is the road very dangerous? Once we arrive in LP is it true that tourists are banned from using motorbikes? Would a motorbike be useful for trips around LP? How are the bus ...

6 days in Laos

Posted by dseckel on 29/7/2008 at 11:24

I've allocated 6 days for Laos. 4 definitely in Luang Prabang (including 2-day mahout experience) Is it better to: 1 day Vientiane, 1 day Vang Vieng, 4 days LP (Is it too much to bus into VV in the morning, gab a tube down the river, and bus out again the next morning?) -or- Just do 5-6 days in LP, with activities out of there? (Perhaps even a night at Nog kiaow?) ...

Near the city centre - Laos & Cambodia?

Posted by em_bug on 29/7/2008 at 07:44

I am planning a trip to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia and was checking out the accommodation listed on the site. I was looking at the following places: Borann, Siem Reap; Lao Wooden House, Luang Prabang; Villa Saykham, Luang Prabang. They all say their address but to me who has never been there before it means very little! I was wondering if anyone knows their proximity to the city centers? ...

Slow Boat-how to get the comfy seats??!

Posted by archerkath on 20/7/2008 at 15:24

Hi There, I've been googling this topic for days! Here's what I've found: On searching through hundreds of travel blogs about this trip, I noticed in people's pictures that some were on super crowded boats with wooden bench seats. Others were on super crowded boats with some comfy gray bucket seats and some white plastic chairs in the back. I don't think this was the expensive slow boat though. For anyone who has done this trip recently, what is the strategy to get on a boat with co ...

Posted by pops786 on 26/7/2008 at 09:35

Hello all, I have brand new hiking boots (maybe 3 years old, worn maybe 5 times and not for hiking) which I am trying to sell. The boots are Hi-Tek (uni-sex I believe) size; Uk-9 1/2 US-10 1/2 Eur-43 1/2. They are waterproof. Was thinking maybe around $USD40 but price negotiable. I have come to the end of my journey and on my last dollars so unable to hike. If anyone is interested I will be at Paphai Guesthouse opposite Wat Paphai... @ 7pm 26/07 or 9am 27/07. Otherwise if anyone could give me a ...

Vang Vieng to Chaing Mai

Posted by mille716 on 23/7/2008 at 11:02

I know I'm doing this backwards but I'm in Luang Prabang right now and heading out to Vang Vieng tomorrow (decided I couldn't resist the tubing). My next stop is Chaing Mai, Thailand and am wondering if I can get there in a more direct route than retracing my steps back up to LP as time is an issue. Thanks for the response. ...

safety/travel advice

Posted by azgrl on 29/5/2008 at 07:11

Can anyone offer some safety/travel advice for first time travelers to Laos and Cambodia? We expect to keep passports, money, and cameras with us and not leave things unattended. But if we want to go swimming what do we do with the gear? Should we carry our passports and money around our neck in safety pouch or is there a better method? Is there any “should of, would of, could of” advice a seasoned traveler could pass on to us? We have strong common sense and are tapped into the travel ...

Visa for China from Laos - Luang Prabang or Vietnam - Hanoi

Posted by travelmike on 16/7/2008 at 11:37

Finally managed to get visa for China. Travel agents in Hanoi - Vietnam were not able to help and we nearly gave up on the whole idea. The China embassy in Hanoi was not overly helpful either. In Laos the process is much easier. After hunting around in Luang Prabang we were recommended http://www.treasuretravellaos.com they were great able to organize everything for us at a modest price, would highly recommend them. Ps. I also have been told the China visa is easy to get in Thailand. Hope th ...

Luang Prabang or Vietienne?

Posted by Brisbod on 9/6/2008 at 17:35

We are spending 3 weeks in Asia in October starting in Kuala Lumpur, flying to Phnom Penh, bus to Siem Reap and we then want to fly to either Luang Prabang or Vietienne for a few days before flying to Chiang Mai, then Bangkok. As our time is limited, we can only choose either LP or Vietienne. Which is recommended? Have read info about an elephant lodge in LP which sounds quite appealing, or would we be better to leave this sort of thing to Chiang Mai? Any suggestions would be greatly appreci ...

Travel companion wanted - North Laos - October - November 2008

Posted by queanbeyan on 22/6/2008 at 08:13

Hi I am a 44 year old male from Canberra Australia and I will be travelling solo in North Laos from October 7 to November 4 2008. I speak Thai and Lao (not fluent but 20 years experience so quite reasonable). I have been to Laos a few times before and I know my way around but I would like to find some people to travel with (male/female any age is OK). I plan to go by boat from Huay Xai to LPB and then from LPB to the main areas in North Laos. After that I will go south to Vientiene and ...

Laos Itinerary

Posted by CJHorn85 on 12/5/2008 at 20:16

Hey all, I will be travelling to SEA from mid-July to mid September (just under 2 1/2 months). I have posted on Lonely Planet forums, but this site appears to be the best of the best when it comes to SEA, so I thought I would try and get some opinions on here as well. Since this is the Laos destination part, I thought I would stick to that, and post my itinerary up for the other countries in the relevant sections. I have a very general itinerary, since my time is limited here, but the idea ...
