I am traveling with my husband to Luang Prabang at the beginning of Jan. I am pregnant and trying to assess how serious the mosquito/malaria problem is in Luang Prabang in the winter. My doctor has said it is a high risk malaria area and recommended I take Larium, but studies are inconclusive regarding the safety of this drug in pregnant women. Can anyone report in on the intensity of the mosquitoes in Luang Prabang during the winter season? Do you take a malaria preventitive? Thanks! ...

Hi, i am planning a trip to Laos for Feb/March 2007. I have always been impartial to Lonely planet and Rough Guides for travel. However i notice that up to date editions of both are limited to 2005 for lonely planet and i think 2002 for RG. However i noticed that Footprint has an edition in 2006. Has anyone used Footprint? I have never used it before. Or is the latest version of Laos/lonelyplanet pretty accurate for the current time? Thanks in advance! ...
I was procrastinating this morning and took a look at Travelfish member itchyfeet's ongoing blog for their trip through Laos:
Meg and JB's travel blog
I opened it up and saw the top pic of a traveller hard at work floating down the river... and just said WOW!
If you're going to Laos or Thailand I highly recommend you give this blog a look -- it's got some outstanding pics that really capture the place...

I would be grateful for any information on travel times and bus times. We are hoping to get to vietnam within 4-5 days. Also just personal recounts would be helpful too.

Could anyone please advise on the speed and ease of getting a visa for Laos if you are in the North of Thailand. Our present plans, as part of a big gap year trip, mean we will be in the Chiang Mai /Chiang Rai region but will not have the opportunity to get the Laos visa in advance of our arrival. We want to cross the border and head for Luang Prabang. Any thoughts much appreciated as well as any views or tips on treks in Northern Thailand.

Digging through some material today I found a "filed" (ie., lost) CD full of pics from Nong Kiaow and Muang Ngoi -- two classic backpacker destinations upriver from Luang Prabang -- including all the accommodation pictures that have long been missing from Travelfish.
While adding in the guesthouse pics, I was struck by just how breathtakingly beautiful the area is -- the photo of the guy strumming a guitar on his guesthouse balcony looking over the river on Muang Ngoi as the river sets, had m ...
i am just fine tuning my itinerary,i have got as far as pakse ( early jan)and wondered what other travellers would recommend we do in the few days that we have down there before we head into cambodia, which of the islands to stay on etc. i also wondered how we would get from eg don det to voen kham(how long) and is it still a nightmare to get from vk to stung treng?
one last question, is it imperative that we take malaria medication ?
cheers for now ...
I'm going to Laos at the end of November and I'd like to spend some time paddling a river or two in Khammouan or Bolikhamsay provinces (Nam Hinboun? Nam Kading?). I mean not very difficult rivers, with several days on water and overnight camping on the river banks.
Do you think it is possible to rent (buy?) some local paddle boat there or should I bring my own inflatable one or is it the idea foolish at all?
I appreciate any recommendation. ...
