Finding a guesthouse LP evening arrival

Posted by Jimoutdoors on 7/2/2015 at 05:05

Hi All, We're arriving in Luang Prabang in a few weeks time at about 7:50pm. We've been looking to find a nice but reasonably cheap private room in a guesthouse online, but it seems there's a premium for anywhere with online booking, and, so far, our emails go unanswered. What chance do you think we have of finding a decent room when we get into town (around 830pm?)? Not sure yet about best option for airport transfers either. Any recommendations? Thanks Jim ...

ideas please for slow boat from Huay Xai -

Posted by breatheagain on 8/5/2011 at 00:24

After reading on the forum about the slow boat we are thinking it would be great to take it from Huay Xai southwards. Can anyone advise me does it go all the way to Vientiane? (then we would cross back into Thailand to stay in Nong Khai for a while) - How long would this take? Could we hop on and off in order to see the highlights of Laos? Or any other ideas would be great. Thank you Tina ...

4000Islands to Siem Reap by bus

Posted by kbabin on 2/5/2013 at 05:52

I am wondering what the best way to get to Siem Reap by bus is. We are currently on Don Det and have researched and have read about scams eg. Not getting a VIP bus as paid for, over charging etc. We have also read about how maybe stopping in Kratie and then getting another bus to Siem Reap from there is an option? Any advice would be really appreciated!! Thanks! ...

The caves at Tham Kong Lo

Posted by mikal83 on 29/1/2015 at 07:32

Travelling north from Pakse to Vientiane will be a long trip and the lonely P guidebook suggests a stopover for the caves at TKL. Has anyone done that.....where did you make your base.....Tha Khaek? I have just looked at the map and Tha K is 180 km from the caves, crikey. There must be a better/easier base than that. How did you get to the caves and back, did you stopeover anywhere....Have read about the motorbike "loop" around the area but 5 days is a chunk out of our trip. But th ...

We are hoping to travel from Vientiane to Hue via Savannakhet in February. It will have to be buses, I know, but the info I've found isn't consistent. Does anyone know if there is definitely a day VIP bus (and its time?) from Vientiane to Savannakhet as well as a night service? Also, is it true that the daily VIP bus from Savannakhet to Hue only runs Monday to Friday? Thanks! ...

possible itinerary

Posted by sunlvr on 27/12/2014 at 10:21

I've posted previously that I'm planning a 3 week trip for next October flying into Bangkok and out of Cambodia and traveling into Laos, and now I would love to scoot into Myanmar. My traveling companion now has to shorten the trip so it will be closer to 2 weeks. This is a possible itinerary, your comments and advice as always would be helpful: 2 days Bangkok 3 days Yangon 5 days Luang Prabang 5 days Siem Reap If you have other ideas it would be great to hear them! I would love the experience ...

Laos honeymoon - head vs heart!

Posted by rebeccajane on 15/1/2015 at 06:10

Hi there, I am trying to plan our 13 day honeymoon to Laos in July, and struggling to work out how to make the most from our limited time whilst not cramming in too much. My fiance and I last travelled around Cambodia and Vietnam 5 years ago for 5 weeks, and intended on travelling to Laos then but got wonderfully waylaid in northern Vietnam and never made it. Needless to say we want to do everything, but having tried that game before we are wary. As it stands I have just hacked down the plans ...

Need a little help in Vientiane

Posted by Rexmundi on 13/1/2015 at 04:59

Hello, I have a little problem, my bank account was hacked while I was in Thailand and all my money was stolen. Fortunately I had brought enough cash to get me to this point but I am running out and my time is becoming limited to receive my new card. I'm now in vang vieng and I am going to be in Vientiane in a few days where I plan on having my card sent. My question is where to have it sent? I have become less trustworthy and if I do not receive this card for any reason I will be in a very ba ...

Overly ambitious itinerary, or overly beaten path?

Posted by Jimoutdoors on 4/1/2015 at 12:57

Hi Guys, First post, but I've been immersing myself in the website and forum for weeks, so thanks for your contributions so far. My S.O. and I (both of us nearly 30 now...) are planning to spend 3 weeks (or so) in Laos in late February and March. The aim was not too rush too much (although as that's what alway happens I fear we may not achieve). Hence the message, please spare a moment to expose our naivety, revel in our foolishness, or point our anything lovely we might have missed. Our curr ...

luang prabang - phongsali

Posted by marcelo1992 on 1/1/2015 at 00:03

hallo, I'm going with a friend to Laos. We will be in luang prabang 20 january. We want to go to Phongsali. We though taking a 3-4hrs bus from luang prabang to nong khiaw and than go to hat sa by boat. However, from Nong khiaw to hat sa is a way long, we wouldn't mind stop in little cities between( muang khwa for example) , but my question is: Does anyone know , in this period of the year( end january), if the demand for boat is high? or I'll have to wait days to have my boat full and ready to ...

Visa to LAO, CAMBODIA, VIETNAM - on arrival or from the consulate ?

Posted by air420 on 2/12/2014 at 21:16

Can anyone suggest if I should make an effort and apply for visa to Lao / Cambodia / Vietnam through the consulate in US, or is it easier / cheaper / faster doing it 'on arrival' ? Also: my understanding was that Vietnam does not allow visa 'on arrival', but I see in this forum that indeed they do. I would greatly appreciate the advice. ...

Getting around Laos

Posted by Domino1 on 6/12/2014 at 17:23

We are planning a trip in January first to Vientiane for 3 nights then to Pakse for 3 nights, to Luang Prabang for 3 nights and Nong Khiau for 3 nights after that. The difficulty is in getting around between these areas. Looks like flying is the way to go but the different websites for Lao Airlines are confusing. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to book flights? Is there an online travel agent someone would recommend or should I book our flights all separately. Also wondering if peo ...

1 week in Luang Prabang

Posted by SaltwaterGem on 30/11/2014 at 17:03

Hey all... I consulted this sight a while back when I went to SEAsia and figured I would check in again for some extra info. My wife and I are heading to Luang Prabang early next. Luang Prabang is my absolute favorite place in SEAsia and pretty high on my list in the world. I know it fairly well and I can come up with plenty of things to do but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything; this is my wife's first time in this neck of the woods. There's Pak Ou Caves and Kuang Si Falls... my ...

Vientiane to Savannakhet by local bus or night bus?

Posted by katieandchris on 17/11/2014 at 10:12

We are currently in Vientiane and our next destination is Savannakhet . We appear to have 2 options: local bus during the day or VIP night bus. My problem with the night bus is that it will arrive in Savannakhet at 5am - are places open then? Will we be able to find a guesthouse at this time? My problem with the local is that it takes longer and we will be wasting a whole day on a bus and it might not arrive until 7pm - would it be easy to find a guesthouse with rooms? Or do we book in adva ...

Laos Itinerary

Posted by alex_stein on 13/11/2014 at 07:28

Hi everyone - below is a potential itinerary for Laos in February of next year. We'd be entering from Thailand. A couple of key questions: 1) To what extent would the hazing effect our trip? My understanding is that it starts in March, by which point we'd be in Vientiane and Four Thousand Islands - would we be OK? Second, I'm aware that this is a rather conventional itinerary and am interested in hearing people's alternative recommendations (particularly for - say - Vang Vieng). We need to sti ...

Hi, can anyone give up to date information about the ATM situation in Laos. I am travelling for a while now and I will go to Laos in the next two weeks (crossing from Vietnam, overland). I do only have Vietnam dong and some Euro with me right now. Should I get some $ before going to Laos or is ist easy to find ATMs. Are VND accepted in Laos? I read a lot of people have problems withdrawing money, altough these posts are a few years old.. I am especially worried about the first few days where ...

overland travel from hanoi to luang prabang via bus -- seeking detailed information!!

Posted by danthony88 on 30/10/2014 at 11:50

Hello travelers, trekkers the rest of y'all with wanderlust in your hearts -- My friend is teaching English in Taiwan (I live in the U.S.) and we're meeting up to backpack around Southeast Asia starting in mid-late January for a month or two. Our first stop is Hanoi , after which we want to head west through Vietnam and Laos to Luang Prabang. I've read lots of horror stories about the Hanoi-LP bus, but our sense of adventure (and finances) dictate this mode of travel, so we will not be dis ...
