Cycle Touring Laos

Posted by enduro75 on 21/2/2014 at 02:52

Hoping anyone can help. I'm a keen Cycle tourist and have booked a flight in March to Vientiane with my bike and have 3 weeks to get to Hoi An in Vietnam. Initially I had planned to spend a day or two at Vang Viang then onto route 13 via Savannakhet - however North Laos looks more interesting so now thinking of cycling From Vang Viang to Phonsavan then follow route 7 to the Vietnam border. Looking at the map there doesn't appear to be many villages along this route. Does anyone know if ...

Slow boat upriver from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai

Posted by TassieWombat on 24/2/2014 at 16:45

Does the slow boat go any slower upriver in the wet season? (I know, not the best time for travel in Northern Laos, but life's travels often don't pan out as one would like) . Seems most folk come down river? Is it more or less crowded? Too difficult for two 70 year olds? We've travelled SE Asia before so are aware what we could be up for..If any one knows let me know please. ...

Packrafting Laos?

Posted by tikchikak on 17/2/2014 at 23:27

Hello, I'm looking to travel to Laos with my packraft in May. Real preliminary research here, just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a good river to float for 7-14 days. How high up the Nam Ou can you get to float down? Is May a bad time to float? I can handle some rapids, but flood stage could be dangerous! Trying to get out of the touristy areas. Thank you very much! ...

New Lao"“China border crossing in Phongsali province

Posted by Ed_Aves on 13/2/2014 at 08:11

Hello all I read last month in the Vientiane Times that a second Lao/China border crossing had opened up for international tourists in December, between Lan Toui/Lan Tuy in Phongsali province, right in the very northern tip of Laos, and Meuang Kham on the Chinese side. Has anyone made this crossing, or does anyone know anyone who has? I saw at the tourist office in Phongsali that there is apparently a daily bus from Phongsali to Lan Tuy at 9am, but does anyone know about the journey, t ...

Posted by jbhicks on 3/2/2014 at 00:11

I'm planning to make 3-week trip to Laos in March. I am hoping to retrace some of my Dad's old footsteps there. He was there in the early 1970's for the Secret War. One of the places I'd like to go to Long Tieng, but I'm looking for some help on the best way to get there. I'm also wondering if it is possible to see the old runway there. Thank you in advance! ...

Are there any updates on renting a jeep type vehicle in Pakse? I would like to do this for my family but it appears impossible to do without a driver. How difficult is it to take a car across the border (Thai-Laos @ Chong Mek). Would you have to pay all sorts of duties and need paperwork proving its your car etc? ...

Savannakhet to Pakse - Urgent help please

Posted by Bridgequeen on 7/12/2013 at 08:27

I am currently in Savannakhet and have asked my very helpful hotel to book a bus for me to Pakse, i need to get there on Monday. They kind of laughed. I have spent the afternoon searching for a travel agent. I also googled to find that there is a flight, which I would prefer but you cannot book it on the Lao Airlines site. I know I could probably pay to go to the bus station tomorrow and try to explain but I would much rather sort it in town with somebody who speaks English. any ideas??? ...

Laos Railway (paid for by China)

An interesting article (very short, as these ex-pat rags are known to do it). Basically says the deal is all but done for China to build a railway through Laos. http://shanghaiist.com/2014/01/15/china_to_build_high-speed_rail_to_s.php ...

A delightful little rort in Pakse

Posted by froglink on 20/1/2014 at 09:07

You have to take experiences like this with humour and enjoy getting fleeced from time to time, especially when it is done so graciously. The police guarding the bridge across the Xe Don on the way north to the airport have a charming way of getting a bit of pocket money. It happened like this. I was on a hired motorbike. I took off from the traffic lights just short of the bridge with everyone else and wondered why the light changed to red so fast. A policeman sauntered out into the road and ca ...

Would you get anti-malaria and anti-rabies preventative treatments for Luang Prabang?

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 15/1/2014 at 17:12

We're going to Luang Prabang for a week, nowhere else in Laos bar day trips on the river, and we are flying in and out of LP. On going for injections for typhoid, tetanus etc, I was recommended to also take preventative medicines against malaria and against rabies. I was surprised because I hadn't thought there was a significant risk of either in Luang Prabang itself. I'd like to ask regular visitors to Luang Prabang and people who know Laos well: Do you / would you take anti-malarials t ...

We did some checking upon prices in Vientiane , but apart from the Guesthouses that a 100 THB to the price, all small tervelagents asked 1100 THB, for which they promised a VIP bus. When asked how many seats, the response would be standard:45 The ingternet tells us that this should be 24 on the VIP of The Transport company. Price 660 THB When we exchanged the tickets from the travelagent against the real travelingvouchers, we found out that: -the pickup plus drive to the border, across the br ...

money questions re arrival in Luang Prabang

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 10/1/2014 at 02:50

1) To get Laotian kip, where is there a reliable ATM in Luang Prabang ? At airport? In town? 2) If there isn't, where is a good place to change $ cash? 3) We're arriving in Luang Prabang on a Sunday. If no ATM, is there anywhere open to change $ cash? Or should / can we get some kip before travelling? (I've been guessing this would be impossible, expensive or illegal.) 4) Our hotel has arranged a car to meet us at Luang Prabang airport at a $ price, which we've agreed. Should we pay this to the ...

Vientiane to Phonsavan

Posted by VenNL on 5/1/2014 at 06:34

We will be travelling from south to nord Laos for 3 weeks in February & March. I've got most of our plans ready, but I'm not sure how to tackle the trip from Vientiane to Phonsavan . We like to travel by bus, but this is a bit to much for one day. The scenery around Vang Vieng sounds beautifull, but I'm not sure we would like this overpartied place. What would be a nice alternative? And can we get from there to Phonsavan by bus? Thanks! ...
