Nam Nern Night Safari helps tigers back from the brink

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/5/2016 at 19:11

Looking to get off the beaten track, support a worthy cause and perhaps spot furry creatures? Read on. "Suddenly the torch is trained like a laser to a single spot; that’s the signal. We turn on our own torches and point. The glow is unmistakeable. There in the brush is a sleek feline body and two yellow orbs shining back at us. It is a civet. I shiver. I’ve been on safaris before but never one where spotting an animal is so important." Cindy Fan for The Australian. ...

"Second Lieutenant Santhi, a soldier who died during the attack, was from Nanh district’s military division, said one of his relatives who declined to be named and did not provide the soldier’s surname. The assailants shot Santhi dead while he was walking in front of the other soldiers, the relative said, adding that he didn’t know if the soldiers were in pursuit of the gunmen." These attacks are really starting to add up in number and are very concerning. You can read the full ...

Report: Bolaven culture, nature, and hiking without guide

Posted by TheWilds on 9/5/2016 at 10:04

Hello fellow travelers! We are two outdoorsy people with about six months of traveling behind us and we just spent six days motor biking around the Bolaven plateau. We discovered a few great places along the way that we wished we'd known about sooner, so we thought we'd share. You do not need six days, but two may not be enough if your goals include hiking and spending some time with locals like ours did. Note: the prices are what we paid and may change for many reasons. TAD TAYICSEUA (44km ...

Is their anyway to get down there without means of airport. Save me having to go back and around to Cambodia and up to Don Det of which I'd have to pay another visa fee. Open to any ideas, don't mind long hauls. Thank you in advance. ...

motorbike trip route help

Posted by craigyyz on 28/4/2016 at 18:35

Hi, I found a place in Luang Namtha that rents motorbikes with a drop off option in either Luang Prabang or VTE. I plan on riding for about 12 days and I'd appreciate help with an itinerary and whether I should go all the way to VTE or stop in LP. I plan on a very modest pace and would like to ride about 3-5 hours daily (in the morning). Looking at the map I'm thinking of this route: Luang Namtha - Oudam Xay - Nong Kiew - east from NK looping around highway 1C to Phonsavan - Phou Khoun - ...

We've found ourselves with limited time after getting caught up in the slow life down on dondhet, but are hoping to visit plain of jars before catching a flight from Vientiane on the 20th. Is it possible to get a bus direct from pakse to plain of jars, and if so what's the journey like? Happy to do night buses and hoping to avoid going through Vientiane to get there! ...

On March 31, the US Embassy has elevated its warning to now include what is commonly referred to as "the new road" between Kasi and Luang Prabang . This means that both roads connecting the towns of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng are now subject to Embassy travel restrictions. You can read the full message here http://laos.usembassy.gov/mobile//warden_messages.html ...

Elevated warning for travel between Kasi and Luang Prabang in Laos

Posted by somtam2000 on 7/3/2016 at 18:47

The US embassy has just upgraded their warnings for travel on the road between Kasi and Luang Prabang . Historically this has been an at times dangerous stretch, but a couple of recent attacks, along with attacks seemingly aimed at Chinese labour in Xaisomboun province, are very concerning. The important part of the warning says (my bold): The Embassy has prohibited official travel on Road 13 from Km 220 north of Kasi in Vientiane province to Km 270 at the Phou Khoun junction in Luang ...

Before you go and dive into the two day boat ride into Luang Prabang and beyond, consider this, a more interesting route You can go from Mandalay to Pyin oo lwin by ute, a day of so there, then onto Hsipaw, a day or so there. Catch the train into Lashio and the next day or so Fly to Tachileik. This is a flight as there is a dust up going under you. The flight is Sat and Mon by Golden Myanmar (An airline that thankfully, the planes operate better than their web site 1% useful, dont ...

Trekking in Luang Nam Tha - A Must-Do?

Posted by yuvalritt on 25/2/2016 at 18:29

Without shopping around that much (But noting in mind that "You get what you pay for"), the impression I am getting is that the trekking services offered are fairly expensive (Around 65$ for a two days trek). I have done before trekking in Myanmar (Kalaw-Inle lake and around Hsipaw) which were significantly cheaper. And so my question is: Is trekking here a must-do thing here? Is it a unique experience that is much different from other places? Thank you Yuval ...
