Trekking - Luang Prabang or Luang Nam Tha?

Posted by svichy on 9/5/2008 at 17:23

Hi there, I want to do some trekking while in Laos, and am not sure if I should go out of my way a bit and go to Luang Nam Tha, or if the trekking in LP is just as good. If I went to LNT, it would probably mean missing out on the mekong river slow boat cruise as well, which I had originally planned to do... but plans always change and I am open to suggestions! Thanks in advance. ...

Train from Laos to Bangkok

Posted by IvybridgeClan on 15/10/2012 at 21:47

We are in Luang Prabang this New Year and then travelling to Bangkok. Considering bus/fly options to Vientiane , we are worried about the bus ride and how safe this is along mountainous, winding roads? Had terrible experience in minibus in Cambodia! Are accidents and breakdowns common/rare on this route LP to VV? Also, catching overnight train to Bangkok. If we do not stay in Vientiane overnight, but arrive during the day (on bus/flight), how much time will we need to allow in order to mak ...

Have You Volunteered at the Lao Elephant Conservation Centre at Sayaboury?

Posted by 1411 on 20/11/2011 at 22:50

Hi! Just read about the Elephant Conservation Centre at Sayaboury http://www.elephantconservationcenter.com/ and am considering devoting 6 of my 16 to 18 days in Northern Laos volunteering there as the hype on the website makes it sound like a spectacular (to me, anyway) lifetime experience. If you've been there yourself or know someone who has, I'd appreciate knowing what your impressions are. Would you say the 2 day trip might be enough all things considered, including the limited time I hav ...

Posted by tinacrossman on 30/9/2012 at 07:58

we are currently in Chaing Rai and leave on Friday for 30 days in Laos - the only thing is we are not travelling light as we are away for one year. We have two massive suitcases (and two small ones) which have not been a problem so far but reading about Laos on TF I am wondering what to do! Can you help? We fancy going from Huay xai to Vientaine and stopping at the little villages along the way as suggested on the itinery but transport seems to be a worry! We wanted to travel via boats and ...

Laos backpacker and writer

Posted by panky on 25/9/2012 at 22:18

Hi guys, I'm interested in hiring a backpacker who is (or has) backpacked Laos to do some research. I can't pay much (it'll still go along way in SE Asia) - and it'll probably be via paypal, but I'm more interested in someone who has traveled a lot, and is out there having a good time, perhaps even blogged a bit, likes researching online for their next hostel or couchsurfer to crash, and does things on the cheap. Does anyone know a good spot - (or is this a good spot). I doubt it'll be more ...

Big Brother Mouse - Luang Prabang

Posted by sianbevans on 8/7/2012 at 20:29

Hello, I am travelling solo for the first time in Laos and am spending a majority of my time in Luang Prabang (8 days). I would like to do a bit of sightseeing and some volunteering. I have come across the Big Brother Mouse website and was wondering about others' experiences with this organisation? I'll definitely drop in and help with conversational English while there but has anyone gone along on a Book Party visit? Any feedback would be appreciated! Cheers ...

Renting Bike in Laos

Posted by chopin on 27/9/2012 at 05:24

Hi all, I'll be travelling to VT, VV, and LP in late october. i will travel mainly by bus and boat for the long haul journeys. i was thinking would it be nice to rent a motobike (the japanese type, not dirt bike) while in these 3 towns, as it would give me the freedom to move about and exploring the towns and surrounding areas. if you have done that, please give me a rough estimate of the cost and conditions of renting bikes there, i hope they won't hold my passport? ...

VT-LP in Oct - boat, bus, or plane?

Posted by chopin on 24/9/2012 at 11:24

Dear all, i'll be in Laos during 4 - 10 Oct. a few questions: 1. Is this period high or low in terms of tourism? 2. I will go from VT to LP, should I take boat(would the water level be sufficient?) or bus? which offers a better experience? fyi, i'll travel from LP to Huay Xai/Chiang Khong and then on to Chiang Mai by boat, so will get a fair share of boating experience here. 3. How about going by plane? any gain/loss as compared with travelling by road or by river? 4. in whichever mode abo ...

Village visits from Luang Prabang

Posted by pete61 on 22/9/2012 at 00:11

Hi, Four of us (2+2 young teenagers) are travelling through Laos in January and we are looking at a fantastic tour called the Akha village project (Tiger Trails). Fantastic idea to support a village and the community by giving them a different type of income by receiving guests and showing them their ways of life. Great for the children too to show them how life is for others. My problem is cost for 4 people. Is their something similar we can do from LP to experience this lifestyle that is not s ...

Laos itinerary advice

Posted by araxas on 16/9/2012 at 12:15

Hello, I'm traveling to Laos for the first time in late November, starting/ending my trip in Vientiane . Here's roughly what I've planned. I'm on an average budget (not 5-star, but not backpacking either) Does this itinerary make sense both logistically and from the perspective of a first time Laos visitor? Any advice would be much appreciated! Day 1 - Vientiane Day 2 - travel to Kong Lor by bus / overnight Day 3 - visit Kong Lor caves bus to Thakhet Day 4 - Thakhet (lake, caves, town) Day ...

Flight between Vientiane and Luang Prabang

Posted by bubbl3s on 17/9/2012 at 23:31

Hi, I will be going to Vientiane on 25th October and I'm thinking of taking flight to Luang Prabang. Does anyone know if I can buy last minute air ticket at the airport? And whether the flight is always full and should be booked in advanced? I'm flying Air Asia into Vientiane and they have already changed my departure date once. I'm afraid they might change it again and if I bought the Vientiane-Luang Prabang flight in advanced, the ticket will go to waste. ...

Hi, First of all, thank you to everyone who is contributing to this forum. Ive been using the information here quite a bit, but this is my first post here. The topic of this post is regarding a planned trip, going back to Laos the summer of 2013. Me and my girlfriend went to Laos the summer of 2011, and really loved it. Our challenge now (luxury problem) is to plan an itinerary that doesnt overlap too much with what we saw then, but still includes many nice and interesting spots. Our itinerar ...

Nice Guest House Phonsavan Not So Nice

Posted by FireTiger on 16/8/2012 at 04:59

I stayed at Nice Guest House Phonsavan in July 2012 for 4 nights. Everything was fine and I had no major complaints. Then it was time to check out when all the drama started: The check out time on the 'rules and guidelines' of the guest house in my room was 12:30 in the afternoon. By the time I went down with my bags it was 1:15pm. I paid for the 4 nights stay and tried to leave. The guy at the desk (either a worker, or manager or the owner) demanded that I pay a whole nights stay for late chec ...
