BCEL ATM not working?

Posted by achoo on 17/4/2012 at 02:46

Is anybody else currently experiencing problems with the BCEL ATM:s? I'm in Thakhek and none of the ATM:s are working for me and the bank doesn't open until tomorrow. I hope it's not my card. My name pops up when I put it in, but after I've done all the choices it just says the transaction is not possible. I've used BCEL before in Luang Prabang and Vientiane without problems. Thank you. ...

Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai Flight

Posted by plew10 on 11/4/2012 at 12:08

Looking into a flight from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai on Lao Airlines. Anyone have an idea how full these planes generally get? We'd like to keep our plans somewhat flexible so don't really want to book too far ahead. If anyone has done this last minute before, how close did you get before booking? Also, if we did wait, might a travel agent in Luang Prabang give a cheaper rate than the website? Current fare is $150/person. Thanks in advance! ...

Air Quality in Laos/Gibbon Experience

Posted by harmonydavid on 2/4/2012 at 00:13

I've been reading about how terrible the air quality is in Northern Thailand and am wondering if conditions are the same in Northern Laos. I'm planning to do the Gibbon Experience in Bokeo in mid-April but if the pollution is as bad as I'm hearing, I'm thinking I should change my plans. Anybody have current information about the air quaility? ...

Phonsavan-Sam Neua-Luang Prabang question

Posted by vietabroad on 6/4/2012 at 03:23

I'll be in Phonsavan and am hoping to make a fast trip to Sam Neua to see the Pathet Lao caves in Vieng Xai before returning to Luang Prabang . My plan is one day on the bus from Phonsavan to Sam Neua, one day for a day trip to Vieng Xai, and one day on the bus back to Luang Prabang. Travel guides say bus from Phonsavan to Sam Neua is 8 hours, and Sam Neua to Luang Prabang is 14 hours. Is this realistic? When I asked a travel agent about booking a car to do the same route, she said roa ...

Motorbike from Phonsavan to the plain of jars

Posted by PeterW on 18/3/2012 at 07:32

Hi I am thinking or renting a motorbike tomorrow and going to the plain of jars with just me, a map and my camera. A tour operator was saying the roads are too bad for a motorbike but I'm a little suspect. I am with a German girl who hasn't ridden a bike a lot and this advice has thrown her off the idea just as she was coming round - which is fair enough! I'm not taking her on the back of mine because if I crash I hurt myself and thats it. I don't want to take anyone down with me. Has a ...

Iteneray Advice

Posted by GetOutOfFLorida on 29/3/2012 at 19:38

Heading to SE Asia for 3 weeks with my girlfriend and looking to see the best sights. I realize we are "flying" through, but we don't get enough vacation time. She wants Halong Bay, I want Luang Prabang and we both want Bangkok and Angkor. Is there anything here that stands out good or bad? We want to see breathtaking beauty and cool sites. I am a history buff and she loves nature. She would like to exchange a flight for a cruise somewhere, but I don't see how to possibly do this. ...

Hello. I'm a 25 year old guy from Sweden that will be travelling alone through Asia for 2 months. I will be spending 1 week in southern Laos, around Pakse and Si Phan Don. I'm looking for people to trek with in the Bolaven Plateau area. There is a guided 2-day intermediate trek through the Dong Hua Sao area (http://www.greendiscoverylaos.com/ps-t-13.htm). Lao Airlines name input

Posted by cn2011 on 26/3/2012 at 14:06

Hi, Just booking flights with Lao Airlines (www.laoairlines.com) When filling in name details it says don't put a space between first and middle name, this would make the name on the ticket and the name in your passport technically different. Has anyone flown with them, and was the ticket fine with no spaces between the names? Have emailed them directly with no reply. Thanks ...

Laos budget

Posted by achoo on 22/3/2012 at 23:02

Hello, All I find on this subject is lists of how much a beer, bowl of noodles, a night's sleep is in different currencies. I need a total budget. Let's say my budget is $40/day (I hear that's a good budget). My question is: How many kip, baht and USD should I take with me and/or exchange at the bank in Huay Xai? Basically how should I divide my budget in different currencies? Is 2 million kip, 5000 baht and 100 dollars enough for 2-3 weeks? Is this too much, too little? It's really confusi ...

A message from the village chiefs at Nam Ou (Laos)

Posted by Oztravels on 21/3/2012 at 22:14

Hello. I recently visited Nam Ou as part of my project in Laos working with the Luang Prabang Tourism Department. During the visit the village chiefs raised the issue that some visitors (a small minority) are causing concerns with the community regarding excess drinking and socialising (sexual conduct). They have asked me to asset them to spread the word about these issues and ask that people visiting respect their culture and their desire to keep Nam Ou a quiet relaxing place for visitors. Bel ...

Communist Police in Northern Laos...

Posted by squarethecircle on 19/10/2011 at 11:43

I'm currently finishing up a 2-month trip around Laos - "Stay Another Day" became the motto for my travels, but "Stay Another Week" would be more accurate, as I stayed in a mere 7 towns during my stay - Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw, Luang Namtha, Vieng Phukha, Muang Sing, in addition to brief overnights in guesthouses near bus stations. I found that as I headed north, the police/government became more openly communist and more openly hostile to my presenc ...
