A message from the village chiefs at Nam Ou (Laos)

Posted by Oztravels on 21/3/2012 at 22:14

Hello. I recently visited Nam Ou as part of my project in Laos working with the Luang Prabang Tourism Department. During the visit the village chiefs raised the issue that some visitors (a small minority) are causing concerns with the community regarding excess drinking and socialising (sexual conduct). They have asked me to asset them to spread the word about these issues and ask that people visiting respect their culture and their desire to keep Nam Ou a quiet relaxing place for visitors. Bel ...

Hey! I am currently in Chiang Khong and need to get a shot for Typhoid (I've never taken it). Does anybody know of any place around the area or in Laos were I can get a Typhoid shot? Thank you! (FYI I wasn't planning on going to Laos at first but I sort of ended up heading there anyway. I forgot I need this vaccine as well.) ...

Communist Police in Northern Laos...

Posted by squarethecircle on 19/10/2011 at 11:43

I'm currently finishing up a 2-month trip around Laos - "Stay Another Day" became the motto for my travels, but "Stay Another Week" would be more accurate, as I stayed in a mere 7 towns during my stay - Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw, Luang Namtha, Vieng Phukha, Muang Sing, in addition to brief overnights in guesthouses near bus stations. I found that as I headed north, the police/government became more openly communist and more openly hostile to my presenc ...

Making cheap phone calls on mobile in Laos to UK

Posted by LoganT on 18/9/2009 at 02:14

Hi Off to Laos next week. I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheap way of making mobile phone calls to the UK whilst I am there as I want to keep in touch with the boyfriend (he doesn't have computer/skype facilities so internet cafes aren't really an alternative). I have a UK mobile phone contract and it costs ALOT to use it in Asia (I stupidly used my phone in Vietnam this year and ran up a bill bigger than my airfare out to Asia!!) I have tried searching the internet etc but only s ...

Southern Laos Itinerary Advice

Posted by lucasdg on 29/7/2011 at 10:55

Hey everyone, So far my itinerary has us entering Laos in Huay Xai, slowboat to LP, bus to Vang Vieng, then bus to Vientiane. From Vientiane, I figure we will avoid the horrible bus and take the only flight we intend to take - Vientiane->Hanoi. From there we will go down the coast of Vietnam. The trick is, I'd really like to check out some of the south of Laos too, but want to do as little backtracking as possible. So, I'm thinking, if I can get from say Hue to Pakse, I can follow the Me ...

Muang Khua

Posted by teamika on 29/2/2012 at 12:06

Things are changing fast on the little town on the Nam Ou. New highway bridges are being built over the Nam Ou and the Nam Paak. Look for Muang Khua to experience some significant growth in the next few years. Electricity is on pretty much full time. Its still a great place to visit. Few falang stay more than one night, missing out on the flavour of the place. See it soon, as it will change quickly. I was there twice in the last month and both times were a hoot. Try staying on the far ...

How sucky is it to travel by bus?

Posted by grak88 on 23/2/2012 at 21:25

Hello fellow fish. I am in Don Det right now. Just got here after a long bus journey from Cambodia. Thinking of travelling by bus to Vientiane and Vang Vieng. My question to anyone who has done it is this: HOW BAD IS THE RIDE AND THE ROADS? My research online says it sucks. The people I have talked to here say it sucks (especially the part between Vientiane and Vang Vieng. Any other stories? I think it's like 12 hours from Four Thousand Islands to Vientiane. I don't know if I should b ...

Shipping to Laos

Hi I'm new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. I'm a seasoned traveler to Thailand and Laos and someday my wife and I would like to retire in a small village a few miles outside of Vientiane (Ban Pafang). For the past few years we have been remodeling my wife's grade school and providing toys and clothing for the kids. But its hard to do with just the baggage allowance EVA airlines. Does anyone know if there is a reasonable way to ship boxes of clothing and toys from the US t ...
