Visa, Roads and Crossing with a Motorbike

Posted by jammac on 4/12/2011 at 14:53

Hi all, I've read of many ways to get a Visa for Laos, but which is the best way and is it restricted to just 60 days before entry? I will be in Borneo then Vietnam and Cambodia all before laos, and around the 70 day mark I'll enter Laos. So which is the best way to get a visa? What condition are the roads in? I want to ride a bike through the country. How safe is it for bikes? Any issues crossing borders with rented bikes? Thanks James ...

2-3 weeks in Laos - Northern or Southern?

Posted by jennakuz on 13/12/2011 at 12:47

Hi, I am going to be in Laos for 2-3 weeks in March/April of 2012. I see there are two 2 week trip outlines for Laos on travelfish, one of the north and one of the south. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of pros/cons of either part of the country? I am a lone 20 year old female Canadian traveller if that helps - looking to do more than just tube down the river and drink! I want to see the true beauty of Laos! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks ...

Applying for Laos visa in Hanoi or on arrival?

Posted by gorkreg on 27/12/2011 at 21:24

I am entering Laos from Vietnam (Tay Trang). Do you recommend applying for the visa in Hanoi 's consulate beforehand? I have heard that it is more expensive in Hanoi and there is also the hassle of dealing with consulates and probably having to come back in one or two days to collect the passport. Obviously, I prefer to get it on arrival (=easier) but I don't know if there is something I am missing and should know about (apart form the $ and the photograph). Thanks ...

Accomodation in Luang Prabang and Vientiane

Posted by nicoleslaw on 5/1/2012 at 14:18

Y'all were so helpful with planning my itinerary that I wanted to pick your brains about accomodation in Luang Prabang and Vientiane also I'll be spending 2 nights in VTN, and 4 nights in LP. Price range is flexible-- anywhere from $20-$60/night (looking for the most bang for my buck and best option. If there's something out of this world for $70ish I could splurge. But I know some places you get almost the same thing for $20 as for $60...). I'm a 28/f travelling solo so safety and loca ...

Getting from Luang Namtha to Chiang Mai on 1 day?

Posted by katikaml on 7/1/2012 at 15:26

Hi, I am planning my first Laos trip that starts in 1 week. I`ll start from Luang Prabang and then go up north. At one point I need to get from Luang Namtha to Chiang Mai. I found out that there is a bus going from Luang Namtha to Huay Xai. And from there will be a bus to Chiang Mai. Does anyone know if this is doable in 1 day only? I don`t mind taking the bus for almost a whole day. But I just want to make sure if that is possible or not. Is anyone there right now? How cold will the nights ...

From Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang by bus

Posted by Banana17 on 24/11/2011 at 18:25

Hello community, i have been getting some great information from this site lately, but I still have this open question. Me and a friend will be traveling from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang sometime in May (low - budget). I haven't found any real information as to how long the trip would take. I would appreciate any advice especially concerning possible routes. Are there any sites worth seeing for a day? We do not have that much time to spend, so I am definitely looking at staying overnight ...

6 Nights In Laos - Stay in Luang Prabang or See Vientiane Too?

Posted by nicoleslaw on 3/1/2012 at 12:14

Hello All, I'm going to be in Laos for 6 nights in Feb. Debating between spending the whole time in Luang Prabang, or doing a night or two in Vientiane and then 4-5 nights in Luang Prabang. I'd be flying in and out of both (and between them). I could conceivably knock a day off Bangkok to be able to make it 7 nights if you all think I'd be nuts to miss Vientiane or cut my time in LP down too much... but I'd rather not. Interest wise... seeing the temples, travel photography, a bit of cu ...

Best Route to get to Cambodia

Posted by mishka1988 on 1/1/2012 at 14:09

Hi everyone, Looking for some advice. I seem to be in a rut going about planning my route. I'll be starting in Thailand crossing into Laos from the Chiang Rai area passing through Luang Prang, Vientiane.. not sure if I should make my way back into Thailand to then make it to the Pot Pei crossing into Cambodia or if possible to head south in a reasonable amount of time to see 4000 islands and then cross into Cambodia heading to Siem Riep. I have been reading there are buses headed to southe ...

How to book accommodation in Nong Khiaw in advance?

Posted by itadakimasu on 13/11/2010 at 09:08

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone has managed to arrange accommodation in advance of arriving in Nong Khiaw? Most of the guesthouses recommended here do not have websites, nor can they be found with booking agents. Nong Kiau does but they are booked out on the day I'm going to be there. Do most people just arrive at Nong Khiaw then find a guesthouse? I'm interested in the Sunset Guesthouse so if anyone has their e-mail that would be hugely helpful Also, if you have been there recently, is i ...

Getting to Hua Hin

Posted by alexandra93 on 19/12/2011 at 00:48

Hello fellow travelers, I am intending to plan a trip to Thailand and Laos next year during semester break. I am thinking of planning a return flight Syd to Bangkok and then flying/traveling up to Laos and down to parts of Thailand. I was wondering whether it is possible to get a flight from Luang Prapang to Hua Hin or a train from Nong Khai to Hua Hin - is it necessary that you must stay/stop at Bangkok to get to Hua Hin? This is the only way I seem to have found (stopping at Bangkok on t ...

Hey all, So I'm planning on entering Laos from Hoi An to Pakse (1-2 days), then plan on heading to Don Det (X days), and leaving to Siem Reap/Cambodia. -Am I depriving myself by spending so little time there? (ie Is it worth the trip or should I save it for its own trip and spend more time in Vietnam/Cambodia?) -Are there any recommended destinations along the way? -Is there a boat down to Cambodia from near Don Det? If so, how is it? (quality, duration, fun/chill factor, etc) Thanks! ...

ATMs in laos

Posted by gorkreg on 11/12/2011 at 14:33

What is the ATM situation in Laos? I prefer to rely just on them (with some Euros in case of emergency). If this is not possible, what are the best places to exchange Euros (banks, money exchangers, etc)? Also, I am going to be entering Laos from Vietnam by road (probably Tay Trang or Na Meo). How do I get kips after I've entered the country? I guess there are no ATMs around. Thanks ...

Vietnam to Laos Crossing

My Laos trip, need some advice!

Posted by jaycee404 on 18/12/2011 at 03:59

Hi all ! I'm travelling to Laos in a couple of weeks. The plan is to fly into Chiang Mai, bus it to Houay Xai to do the Gibbon experience. From there, going by slow to boat to Luang Prabang. Question, when you return from the Gibbon experience would you have enough time to catch the boat to LP? Also i plan to stay in Chiang Kong over night then cross the river to meet the Gibbon group which departs at 9am. Is this wise, would there be enough time if i caught an early fery? Many thanks! ...
