Laos in march or april?

Posted by georg066 on 22/10/2011 at 17:06

I am planning a 3 week trip to Laos. Unfortunately march and april is the only time I can get off work. I read that the smoke in laos is really bad in march and april. Quote travelfish: 'March to May in Laos -- yuck!' Between march and april what is the best time to go to Laos? Or would you advise to not go at all during that time? Is it that bad? I would be really thankful for hearing some experience! Thanks in advance Georg ...

LP neighborhood characteristics

Posted by ccalvin09 on 13/10/2011 at 07:31

Hi all, I'm headed to LP in a bit and would like to know a bit more about the personalities of the little neighborhoods so I can pick one when I roll into town looking for a guest house. I'm kind of a TravelFish junkie and love to read all the forums, but I don't think I have seen anything explaining whats in the Historic District vs. Southern LP or Behind Joma Bakery. And do you literally mean right behind a bakery? Ha! And not that LP is San Francisco, but you sure get a different taste in th ...

Safety and Travel in Laos

Posted by annifrid23 on 9/10/2011 at 17:00

Hello Everyone, I am planning my trip through Laos and I was reading about some banditry on some of the transportation routes. In my guidebook, it says that Route 13 between Kasi and Vang Vieng is a target of Hmong bandits and insurgents and it also said to take extra precautions on Route 7 between Phonsavan and Phou Khoun. 1. Has anyone heard of any problems on these routes? I was planning on taking buses to my stops. 2. Does anyone know the best way to go from Vang Vieng to Phosovan to ...

Northern Laos from Thailand

Posted by crellston on 13/10/2011 at 21:06

Planning on entering Lao via the Chiang Khong/Huay Xai crossing but according to the border crossing section of this site, they sometimes do not accept USD for the fee - what currencies do they accept? I have had hassles before with Lao border officials and wonder how bad it really is? Also how easy/difficult is bus travel in the area. We are planning on visiting Muang Sing, Phongsali, Muang Noi etc.? We did this trip 12 years ago by renting a car and driver from LP and wonder what if anything ...

Living in Luang Prabang for 2-3 months

Posted by placeshifter on 26/7/2010 at 02:22

My girlfriend (and our 3 year old child) currently live in Seoul, South Korea. I make my living through the Internet so have great flexibility in where I can live. We're searching for a place in SE Asia where we could spend 2-3 months every year (December - February) that has charming & atmospheric architecture and neighborhoods (reminiscent of old European towns); is surrounded by beautiful nature; offers delicious, affordable cuisine; and just an overall pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere ...

Laos Itinerary Ideas - November / December

Posted by lithium on 30/8/2011 at 06:37

I have 10-15 days to spend in Laos some time between November 19th and December 26th. I will either be coming from Bangkok and heading to Vietnam or vice versa. My main interests are: trekking, scenery, boat trips, cuisine and some history. Not big on museums and temples. Would be nice to meet up with other travellers but I'm not into partying and drinking. I've heard that Vientiane and Vang Vieng are nothing to write home about so I'm wondering if it's possible to spend all my time in Lu ...

BCEL ATM's stealing money from your account.

Posted by pabloeskimo on 4/8/2009 at 03:21

We desperately needed to some cash in Paksé because we were going to Don Khong and we knew there were no ATM's there. We tried 3 different ATM's in Paksé & all of them gave the "down for maintenance" message, receiving no money & no receipt. Now when we are back home we see that the transactions have been taken from the account anyways, 300 euros have been taken from the account & we did not get that money or receipts. We will contact our bank & BCEL, along the way we found some people in ...

Riddle me this: Mekong Question

Posted by jgreen on 1/10/2011 at 14:37

Keep in mind I've never been to Laos, although I've spent much time in Thailand. How come you only hear about a couple boat trips along the Mekong (Like Huay Xai - Luang Prabang route)? How come a person couldn't take the Mekong right down to Cambodia and into Vietnam? Rough water? Water falls? Government restricitons? For such a lovely river, I would think that more of it would be travellable (probably not a word). I would love to take a trip over the whole Mekong, start to finish. ...

Flooding in Laos

Does anyone know if the heavy rains in the region have caused any serious flooding in Laos as in surrounding countries? Bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng

Hey Guys, Was hoping to get some advice on the bus trip between Vientiane to Vang Vieng? If we fly into Vientiane late is it easy to catch a bus early the next morning? I have read that booking a VIP bus/mini bus is a gamble because you might sometimes be on a plastic chair in the isle. Are the normal buses ok to travel on? Thanksss ...

Lao Visa - 15 or 30 days upon arrival?

Posted by jenny_v on 6/10/2011 at 20:44

Hi travelfishers, I recently contacted the Lao embassy in Sweden to enquire about getting a visa. They told me that the visa issued upon arrival is only for 15 days (and not 30 days as most blogs/websites mention) as opposed to the one you can get from the embassies. Is this something new? I have to send my passport with DHL to Sweden to get the visa (and they only accept Swedish Kroner!!) and just looking at my options here. Also, is it relatively easy to extend your visa in Vientaine? Che ...

Laos visa and passport validity

Posted by bakpakk on 17/4/2010 at 13:20

Hey guys, quick question. Can you get into Laos with a valid visa even if your passport is not valid for 6 months? Laos is going to be my last stop during my summer trip (I hope) and by then my passport will be valid for 5 months not 6. I am thinking of getting a laos visa @ their embassy at my home country before traveling to SE Asia over the summer. My passport is still valid for 8 months now so I can definitely get a Laos visa at my home country but I don't want to get it if I won't be able t ...

Instead of Vang Vieng...

Posted by JavaJunkie on 4/2/2010 at 03:43

My husband and I are spending a week in Laos, arriving in Vientiane by overnight train from Ayutthaya, Thailand. Originally I had planned an overnight in Vientiane, bus trip and overnight in Vang Vieng, bus trip and three days in Luang Prabang, and slow boat to Huay Xai. The more I read about the length of the bus trips on curvy roads and the touristy-ness of Vang Vieng, the more sense it made to fly from Vientaine to Luang Prabang, which leaves us with an extra two days to spend somewhe ...
