Posted by magneticbear on 17/3/2011 at 21:00

Hello, I just left Laos and forgot that no where in the world will exchange Laos Kip (because it's not worth very much...) I will be returning to Portland, Or at the end of April. If you live in Portland and would like Kip before you go, just let me know! I entered Laos from Chiang Khong, Thailand to Huay Xai (North) and traveled south to the following: Pak Beng, Luang Prabang, Phou Khoun (1 day only), Vang Vieng, Vientiane (1 day only), Tha Khaek (1day only), Pakse, Don Det, and Tat Lo. I had a ...

Posted by trobs on 16/3/2011 at 19:50

Hi all, I've been at the markets in Vientiane today and loved the look of some of the things that are being sold in the antique shops, particularly the opium teapots. I have a couple of questions that I hope somebody can answer. 1. Any idea if these a real antiques? If they are, is it removing some of their important cultural heritage if I purchase some of these things? 2. Any trouble getting things like this out of Laos? Thanks ...

Posted by Captain_Courageous on 5/12/2010 at 09:44

Hello there, first time traveller to Laos and in need of advice please. Am unfamiliar with the layout of the town and which area would be better suited for me - I've been looking at Riverside GH, Soul Lan Xang GH, and Sayo GH. With Sayo probably Sayo River or Sayo Xieng Mouane. Has anyone any experience of these, which would you choose and why? What is the distance to say, the morning market, national museum, Tat Luang and Wat Sisaket? How far are they from where I could book a tour? Are th ...

My girlfriend and I are coming to Laos in 2 days and we wish to do some trekking and touring with a guide. We land in Vientiane in two days. We are willing to take a flight to another part of the country to start our adventure, but we would like to meet up with a local guide. Also we would like to experience some less rural areas as well, with a guide. Any suggestions of where to fly from Vientiane to start our 2 weeks in Laos? Any info for contacting guides? We are in our twenties and fit, a ...

I wanted to put a post up here about our recent 4 week trip to Laos and Cambodia. When I was planning our trip most posts on here seemed to suggest longer is necessary, but I wanted to let others that are planning similar trips know that we were really happy with the amount of time we had and didn’t feel we missed out. We spent two weeks in Laos and two weeks in Cambodia, we didn’t plan a set itinerary but knew we needed to move every few days… breakdown as follows:- Laos: Vientiane 2 ...

Dear all, I've read through a lot of topics here and find them greatly useful. It has urged me to make a short trip to Laos, hopefully next week. Please kindly give your advice on this. I would love to visit Luang Phrabang, Xieng Khuoang and Vientianne. I will start from Hanoi and will try to lower the cost as much as possible. I'm wondering if I go by bus, will i make it in 5 days, probably from 5th to 10th of this February ? I understand that flight is faster and more convenient but my bud ...

Hopefully your advice can guide me... At the end of the March, I will fly to Ho Chi Minh and work my way up the coast of Vietnam to Hanoi in about 15 days. From Hanoi I hope to transfer to Sapa to Dien Bien Pu and cross over into Laos on April 11 or 12. In Laos, I wanted to spend Pii Mai in Luang Prabang, work my way ...

Laos - Ban Nam Ou resort

Posted by teamika on 15/2/2011 at 09:25

Ok, as promised here is the scoop on the "resort" at Km marker 232.5 on Laos Route 13. Bailed out of the mini-van at the bungalows. Six tiny bungalows perched on the hill above the road and the large hotsprings pool. 60,000 Kip per night. Pretty shabby and I used a hostel sheet as the bedding was dodgy. The spot is a stop for long-haul truckers needing abath in the hotspring and cigarettes across the road at the restaurant. Everything is shabby and funky but also crazy and cool. ...

GH Prices in Luang Prabang

Posted by paulwoconnell on 4/2/2011 at 09:14

What's happening with GH prices in LP? I was there a while back, and back then (2004) it was way cheaper than Thailand. Looking now everything appears to be about double Chiang Mai prices. (and certainly a lot more than I'm paying now in Hanoi) Is this just a function of there not being many of the cheaper places advertised online, or am I really going to have to pay $30 - 40 USD for a clean private room without a shared bathroom? I arrive on the 7th in the afternoon (half two - so that's ...
