Alternative to Vang Vieng?

Posted by freezabird1 on 5/1/2011 at 02:03

Hey all, Am planning my trip to Laos and Vang Vieng sounds and looks like a beautiful place I kinda don't wanna miss... Except I don't really need to get wasted and watch Friends with a bunch of Europeans all the way in Laos and it sounds that that's the whole thing in Vang Vieng. Is there anything real left about that place, is it skippable or is there a good alternative around? Mind you, loved the at parties Koh Phangan but that was 10 years ago and I really want something else for this tri ...

Worst bus trip ever

Posted by keatonec on 28/11/2010 at 18:05

I just wanted to say that myself and my girlfriend were just on the worst bus ever. It was a minibus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng and I had heard that it was bad, but not this bad. This driver was a maniac and the road itself was crazy windy. I don't think the driver knew how to use his brakes, he was taking corners at at least 45-50 kph. I don't get carsick but this ride was nuts. Has anyone else experienced this? and also is the ride to Vientiane as bad? I have heard that it is. ...

should we skip southern Laos?

Posted by wildernessofsweets on 17/12/2010 at 06:11

I love this site - if only it had been around for our first trip to SE Asia over 7 years ago. Wondering if we should skip southern Laos during our short 3 weeks trip through southern Vietnam and Cambodia. We're fairly experienced and independent travels but seems like the highlights of Laos for most visitors are in the north. We like exploring small parts of a country so we have excuses, I mean, reasons to visit again. any advice for leaving out Laos completely or sitting for hours on a bus t ...

22 year old male traveling to Laos for the first time!

Posted by ihoopjazz on 5/11/2010 at 21:09

Hi friends, I am a new member to the travel fish forums. I have been checking out this website for the last couple weeks and it is a great resource. I will be traveling alone in Laos for 2-3 weeks as part of a larger trip this coming January/February. I am flying into Vientiane. Right now I have no concrete plans and I am looking for suggestions on where to go and what to do! I'm not really looking for the "backpacker" type experience with lots of partying ,etc. I really want to ...

Trekking in Northern Laos (Vieng Phouka and Muang Khua)

Posted by dmlid on 23/1/2009 at 05:38

Hi I'm travelling round Northern Laos for 3 weeks next month. To kick off, I've booked the 3 day Akha Trail out of Vieng Phouka on Monday feb 16 and I'm looking for trekking companions (partly to bring down the cost, but mainly for the company!). I booked through Green Discovery http://www.greendiscoverylaos.com/nt-t-13.htm but its run by the Vieng Phouka tourist office (who are slightly cheaper but more difficult to book with from the UK). I'm planning on heading up to Muang Khua aft ...

Vientiane to Pak Lai by boat

Posted by kahrani on 16/2/2009 at 12:14

I was hoping to catch the slowboat from Vientiane up to Pak Lai next week, then onto Sainyabuli and LP via bus. Does anyone have any up-to-date info about the boat trip - is it still running, roughly how many times a week etc? There seems to be a lack of info on the net about it - and I can't even find a section on Sainyabuli on travelfish! Relying on my library copy of LP Laos (which I won't be able to take with me...) Thanks xx ...

Bolaven Plateau Bike/Motorbike Questions

Posted by caseyprich on 11/10/2010 at 07:49

I'm trying to get together some people to go to the Bolaven Plateau but have a few questions that need answering. To anyone who has experience going either the short or the long loop - Can you do it on a bicycle? If so, how many days did it take? Is it a solo experience or need a friend? How slippery are the roads for an inexperienced motorbiker? If so, how many days did it take? Any thoughts at all on the subject of the Bolaven Plateau would be appreciated. ...

China (kunming) to Laos to Thailand

Hi! I have been obsessively reading so many posts and forums my head is spinning. I've gotten a lot of info, but am hoping someone can help me out with my specific situation / criteria. My boyfriend and I want to spend the month of January going overland from Kunming (where we will arrive on new years eve) through Laos and into thailand, with the focus in thailand on ISLAND TIME! i've been in western china for too long. we are not opposed to a flight at some point along the way, but don't know ...

Transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng - Options?

Posted by jleetravel on 1/12/2010 at 14:44

First of all Id like to say thanks to all these amazing comments & feedback on this forum from some notable Laos travellers! Have gathered some great info for my trip end of this month! I have been trying to find info on other forms of transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng other than the early morning buses ... as Air Asia has yet again delayed our flight schedule times and now we arrive 6hrs later than expected - and therefore miss the last bus that seems to be at 1:30pm in the aftern ...

Si Phon Don - which island?

Posted by caseyprich on 22/12/2010 at 09:01

Hey all, If I have the time after my trip through the Bolaven Plateau I thought that I'd unwind down in Si Phon Don. I've been reading up on the islands, and though the big island ( Don Khon g) sounds the easiest to get to and away, I think I'm more in the mood for one of the smaller ones (Don Khon or Don Dhet ). There is a lot of information available on both these islands - and though Don Khon is 'more Lao' I wonder if after traveling for about two weeks on the Plateau I may rather stay ...

SIlk store in Ban Xieng Lek by Luang Prabang

Posted by dgilland on 23/12/2010 at 10:31

I just returned home from an excellent vacation in Laos and Thailand, but I have discovered that a silk scarf that I purchased in Ban Xieng Lek has been ruined - the perils of living out of a backpack I suppose. Anyways, I was hoping to see if anyone knows the name of the store that I bought it from. It was a warehouse and storefront - 2 different buildings, and the store had 2 looms out front. It was maybe 10 minutes walking in from the edge of town, and the lady I bought it from handed me a c ...

Accomodation booking in 'Remote Southern Laos'

Anyone who has moved from Pakse into Tad Lo and beyond (Salavan, Sekong, Attapeu, Paksong) - did you find it was necessary to book accommodation in advance on the loop through the Bolaven Plateau or were there usually good spots open? Especially interested in Tad Lo as I hear it is becoming more of an option and prefer to stay with a view of the river. (oops! - late january early february) ...

Short trip in Nothern Laos

Posted by brighie on 19/12/2010 at 16:58

Hi everybody, I will be in Laos through Tay Trang around 30th December. I've two (maybe) easy questions: Is it possible to reach Muang Sing from Muang Khua in one day? I read that it takes around 8-10 hours with 3 different buses (Muang Khua --> Udomxai --> Luang Namtha ---> Muang Sing). It is best to do this trip with a private driver, isn't it? On the 7th of January we'll must take flight from LP to Bangkok (via Vientiane). I've many problems to book this flight from Italy ( ...

I'm dreaming of a Laos Christmas and a sociable new year

Posted by jackymoon on 19/12/2010 at 11:35

Hello every one, It seems I will be spending the holidays in Laos. Which seems to me tobe a great thing. I think I will end up in Vientiane or Vang Vieng forChristmas, and certainly Vang Vieng for NYE. Sounds like the kind ofplace that I usually don't like to spend too much time, but I wouldvery much enjoy company since I travel alone. So my question is, whichguesthouses in those two cities would be recommendable for friendlystaff and good social atmosphere? Sometimes it is such a pain ...

Hey guys, I'll be in Laos next May and was thinking of renting a motorbike to take in the surroundings of the various cities that I'm in for some short excursions. I've thought of a few possible options and would like some feedback/comments esp from those who've done it before. a) First option would be riding to and around the Phou Khao Khouay N.P. near Vientiane. b) Renting a bike from Vang Vieng and maybe heading to Kasi c) Renting a bike from Phonsavan (im not really sure what's there i ...
