Looking for a trekking guide and some adventure.

Posted by W_Sobchak on 17/10/2010 at 18:24

My girlfriend and I are coming to Laos in 2 days and we wish to do some trekking and touring with a guide. We land in Vientiane in two days. We are willing to take a flight to another part of the country to start our adventure, but we would like to meet up with a local guide. Also we would like to experience some less rural areas as well, with a guide. Any suggestions of where to fly from Vientiane to start our 2 weeks in Laos? Any info for contacting guides? We are in our twenties and fit, a ...

2 weeks in Laos, 2 weeks Cambodia

Posted by summerbutterfly on 22/2/2011 at 19:25

I wanted to put a post up here about our recent 4 week trip to Laos and Cambodia. When I was planning our trip most posts on here seemed to suggest longer is necessary, but I wanted to let others that are planning similar trips know that we were really happy with the amount of time we had and didn’t feel we missed out. We spent two weeks in Laos and two weeks in Cambodia, we didn’t plan a set itinerary but knew we needed to move every few days… breakdown as follows:- Laos: Vientiane 2 ...

He is going to Laos to wait on his work visa because his travel visa has expired in Thailand. He has little money. My question: Is there someplace that he might be able to volunteer during his time in Laos that might provide him with food and a place to sleep? ...

5 days in Laos

Posted by quannm on 1/2/2011 at 00:21

Dear all, I've read through a lot of topics here and find them greatly useful. It has urged me to make a short trip to Laos, hopefully next week. Please kindly give your advice on this. I would love to visit Luang Phrabang, Xieng Khuoang and Vientianne. I will start from Hanoi and will try to lower the cost as much as possible. I'm wondering if I go by bus, will i make it in 5 days, probably from 5th to 10th of this February ? I understand that flight is faster and more convenient but my bud ...

I'm currently living in Thailand and have been planning a trip to Vietnam and Laos. I'm set on the Vietnam portion, but there is something about Laos that is unsettling me. Hopefully your advice can guide me... At the end of the March, I will fly to Ho Chi Minh and work my way up the coast of Vietnam to Hanoi in about 15 days. From Hanoi I hope to transfer to Sapa to Dien Bien Pu and cross over into Laos on April 11 or 12. In Laos, I wanted to spend Pii Mai in Luang Prabang, work my way ...

Laos - Ban Nam Ou resort

Posted by teamika on 15/2/2011 at 09:25

Ok, as promised here is the scoop on the "resort" at Km marker 232.5 on Laos Route 13. Bailed out of the mini-van at the bungalows. Six tiny bungalows perched on the hill above the road and the large hotsprings pool. 60,000 Kip per night. Pretty shabby and I used a hostel sheet as the bedding was dodgy. The spot is a stop for long-haul truckers needing abath in the hotspring and cigarettes across the road at the restaurant. Everything is shabby and funky but also crazy and cool. ...

GH Prices in Luang Prabang

Posted by paulwoconnell on 4/2/2011 at 09:14

What's happening with GH prices in LP? I was there a while back, and back then (2004) it was way cheaper than Thailand. Looking now everything appears to be about double Chiang Mai prices. (and certainly a lot more than I'm paying now in Hanoi) Is this just a function of there not being many of the cheaper places advertised online, or am I really going to have to pay $30 - 40 USD for a clean private room without a shared bathroom? I arrive on the 7th in the afternoon (half two - so that's ...

I hope to take a bus or mini-bus overnight but : 1. Is it better to plan it through a travel company or go to Arcade Bus Station and figure it out on my own? 2. Which border crossing should I go to? Nong Khai or Chiang Kong/Huay Xai? What's the difference? 3. Is is possible to leave Chiang Mai on Wed night and get into Laos and ...

Savannakhet to Bangkok

Posted by caseyprich on 29/1/2011 at 17:37

Hey, I may be going from Si Phon Don passed Pakse up to Savannakhet for two nights - but then will need to get back to Bangkok, so a couple questions. Anyone know something about getting to Ubon Ratchatani from Savannakhet? Can you book a direct VIP bus with border crossing like in Pakse? If so - how much, where to book, and time it takes? If not - how is the best way to get from Savannakhet to Ubon Ratchatani? Especially how much time would it take? I know that Lao Airlines offers a Frida ...

Get a room! (Southern Laos)

Posted by caseyprich on 5/2/2011 at 17:06

Just to let anyone traveling through here to know - good rooms are at a serious premium. None of the guest houses has availability in the afternoon - those arriving from Ubon or Si Phon Don are grasping away from anything they can find, usually ending up in one of the hotels on Road 13. Still, everything is centrally located so its not a problem. However, if you want a nice view from Sedong River GH or the companionship of Sabadiya 2 - then either arrive early or make a reservation. And with ...

Size should be at least 40 sqms. Our budget is USD 500 incluing bills. Does anyone know about such a place or have an idea how to look for one from home? (obviously, ...
