GH Prices in Luang Prabang

Posted by paulwoconnell on 4/2/2011 at 09:14

What's happening with GH prices in LP? I was there a while back, and back then (2004) it was way cheaper than Thailand. Looking now everything appears to be about double Chiang Mai prices. (and certainly a lot more than I'm paying now in Hanoi) Is this just a function of there not being many of the cheaper places advertised online, or am I really going to have to pay $30 - 40 USD for a clean private room without a shared bathroom? I arrive on the 7th in the afternoon (half two - so that's ...

Thai Visa Run to Laos - New Question

Posted by spicytraveler on 10/1/2011 at 14:39

I need to go to Vientienne to apply for a Thai Visa this Wednesday and I currently live in Chiang Mai . What is the fastest and most convenient way to get there? I hope to take a bus or mini-bus overnight but : 1. Is it better to plan it through a travel company or go to Arcade Bus Station and figure it out on my own? 2. Which border crossing should I go to? Nong Khai or Chiang Kong/Huay Xai? What's the difference? 3. Is is possible to leave Chiang Mai on Wed night and get into Laos and ...

Savannakhet to Bangkok

Posted by caseyprich on 29/1/2011 at 17:37

Hey, I may be going from Si Phon Don passed Pakse up to Savannakhet for two nights - but then will need to get back to Bangkok, so a couple questions. Anyone know something about getting to Ubon Ratchatani from Savannakhet? Can you book a direct VIP bus with border crossing like in Pakse? If so - how much, where to book, and time it takes? If not - how is the best way to get from Savannakhet to Ubon Ratchatani? Especially how much time would it take? I know that Lao Airlines offers a Frida ...

Crossing the border in Laos!

Myself and my friend are traveling through Thailand in May - starting in Bangkok then traveling up to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai after 3/4 weeks. We then want to cross the Thai border to Laos, however at the moment we are unsure where the best crossing points would be and how easy it is by public transportation. If anyone could give us advice that would be appreciated! Thanks ...

Get a room! (Southern Laos)

Posted by caseyprich on 5/2/2011 at 17:06

Just to let anyone traveling through here to know - good rooms are at a serious premium. None of the guest houses has availability in the afternoon - those arriving from Ubon or Si Phon Don are grasping away from anything they can find, usually ending up in one of the hotels on Road 13. Still, everything is centrally located so its not a problem. However, if you want a nice view from Sedong River GH or the companionship of Sabadiya 2 - then either arrive early or make a reservation. And with ...

my husband and I are looking for a flat, apartment or suite to stay in Luang Prabang in July and August 2011,before we move back to Berlin. The place should definitely have a double bed, a desk and a chair and internet, and it would be great if it had a kitchen or soome kitchen facilities (but not necessary) and a living room. Size should be at least 40 sqms. Our budget is USD 500 incluing bills. Does anyone know about such a place or have an idea how to look for one from home? (obviously, ...

changing korean won to kip in LP

Posted by ratyoke on 20/1/2011 at 20:00

I'm an English teacher in Korea, so I get paid in won. Little did I know, not many places in Laos will change won to kip (at least that has been my experience). I had no problem changing it when I first got to Vientiane, but when that money started to run out the other banks I went wouldn't do it. So I'm in Luang Prabang right now wondering if anyone knows where I can go to change my won to kip? ...

Southern Laos Budget

Posted by caseyprich on 14/1/2011 at 13:12

Hey all, I hear that in Southern Laos the only place to exchange USD is in Pakse. Doing the Bolaven Loop I'm wondering how much Kip I should bring on the excursion. For room, I'm estimating around 60,000 Kip per night though I expect to end up spending closer to 48,000. My question is food/beer and gas. I've looked around andsee that noodles run 8,000 Kip a meal - I'm assuming there isn't much in the way of a burger and pizza joint in Sekong so I don't expect to budget for splurge meals. ...

safe place to leave luggage in pakse/champasak?

dear travelers, for complicated reasons (i'm doing research), i am traveling with a laptop and some heavy coffee table books. i'm in pakse now and headed to xepong, attapeu, and hopefully some very small villages in between. i'd rather not travel with the laptop and books, obviously! is there anywhere safe to keep left luggage in pakse or champasak? i would be willing to spend one night at an expensive hotel if it meant a safe place for my goods for a week. i was thinking maybe the inthara cha ...
