Crossing the border in Laos!

Posted by floralbutton on 2/2/2011 at 19:54

Myself and my friend are traveling through Thailand in May - starting in Bangkok then traveling up to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai after 3/4 weeks. We then want to cross the Thai border to Laos, however at the moment we are unsure where the best crossing points would be and how easy it is by public transportation. If anyone could give us advice that would be appreciated! Thanks ...

Get a room! (Southern Laos)

Posted by caseyprich on 5/2/2011 at 17:06

Just to let anyone traveling through here to know - good rooms are at a serious premium. None of the guest houses has availability in the afternoon - those arriving from Ubon or Si Phon Don are grasping away from anything they can find, usually ending up in one of the hotels on Road 13. Still, everything is centrally located so its not a problem. However, if you want a nice view from Sedong River GH or the companionship of Sabadiya 2 - then either arrive early or make a reservation. And with ...

Renting a flat in Luang Prabang for 2 months

Posted by travelinchen on 2/2/2011 at 17:01

my husband and I are looking for a flat, apartment or suite to stay in Luang Prabang in July and August 2011,before we move back to Berlin. The place should definitely have a double bed, a desk and a chair and internet, and it would be great if it had a kitchen or soome kitchen facilities (but not necessary) and a living room. Size should be at least 40 sqms. Our budget is USD 500 incluing bills. Does anyone know about such a place or have an idea how to look for one from home? (obviously, ...

Wondering if anyone can advise if either of these roads is better in any way then the other. I may only get to do one. Should I get off the boat at Pak Beng and go to Oudom Xai or continue to Houei Xai and take the road to Luang Namtha. Many thanks, Ian. ...

changing korean won to kip in LP

Posted by ratyoke on 20/1/2011 at 20:00

I'm an English teacher in Korea, so I get paid in won. Little did I know, not many places in Laos will change won to kip (at least that has been my experience). I had no problem changing it when I first got to Vientiane, but when that money started to run out the other banks I went wouldn't do it. So I'm in Luang Prabang right now wondering if anyone knows where I can go to change my won to kip? ...

Southern Laos Budget

Posted by caseyprich on 14/1/2011 at 13:12

Hey all, I hear that in Southern Laos the only place to exchange USD is in Pakse. Doing the Bolaven Loop I'm wondering how much Kip I should bring on the excursion. For room, I'm estimating around 60,000 Kip per night though I expect to end up spending closer to 48,000. My question is food/beer and gas. I've looked around andsee that noodles run 8,000 Kip a meal - I'm assuming there isn't much in the way of a burger and pizza joint in Sekong so I don't expect to budget for splurge meals. ...

safe place to leave luggage in pakse/champasak?

Posted by betsbillabong on 11/1/2011 at 09:17

dear travelers, for complicated reasons (i'm doing research), i am traveling with a laptop and some heavy coffee table books. i'm in pakse now and headed to xepong, attapeu, and hopefully some very small villages in between. i'd rather not travel with the laptop and books, obviously! is there anywhere safe to keep left luggage in pakse or champasak? i would be willing to spend one night at an expensive hotel if it meant a safe place for my goods for a week. i was thinking maybe the inthara cha ...

landscape and trekking in northern laos

Posted by gawe on 7/1/2011 at 01:34

I can't decide whether I sould stay around Luang Namtha /Muang Sin or go up to Phongsali. I love beautiful landscapes, flowers, trees, rice paddies, and I like trekking to small villages. I am not interested in seeing too many tourists. In my opinion, the positive thing about Muang Sing would be, that I could walk on my own to small hilltribe towns. My concerns about Phongsali: maybe it will be rather cold and foggy in mid of january? ... and to be honest, I travell to Laos, because I want to ...

Alternative to Vang Vieng?

Posted by freezabird1 on 5/1/2011 at 02:03

Hey all, Am planning my trip to Laos and Vang Vieng sounds and looks like a beautiful place I kinda don't wanna miss... Except I don't really need to get wasted and watch Friends with a bunch of Europeans all the way in Laos and it sounds that that's the whole thing in Vang Vieng. Is there anything real left about that place, is it skippable or is there a good alternative around? Mind you, loved the at parties Koh Phangan but that was 10 years ago and I really want something else for this tri ...
