Southern Laos Budget

Posted by caseyprich on 14/1/2011 at 13:12

Hey all, I hear that in Southern Laos the only place to exchange USD is in Pakse. Doing the Bolaven Loop I'm wondering how much Kip I should bring on the excursion. For room, I'm estimating around 60,000 Kip per night though I expect to end up spending closer to 48,000. My question is food/beer and gas. I've looked around andsee that noodles run 8,000 Kip a meal - I'm assuming there isn't much in the way of a burger and pizza joint in Sekong so I don't expect to budget for splurge meals. ...

safe place to leave luggage in pakse/champasak?

Posted by betsbillabong on 11/1/2011 at 09:17

dear travelers, for complicated reasons (i'm doing research), i am traveling with a laptop and some heavy coffee table books. i'm in pakse now and headed to xepong, attapeu, and hopefully some very small villages in between. i'd rather not travel with the laptop and books, obviously! is there anywhere safe to keep left luggage in pakse or champasak? i would be willing to spend one night at an expensive hotel if it meant a safe place for my goods for a week. i was thinking maybe the inthara cha ...

landscape and trekking in northern laos

Posted by gawe on 7/1/2011 at 01:34

I can't decide whether I sould stay around Luang Namtha /Muang Sin or go up to Phongsali. I love beautiful landscapes, flowers, trees, rice paddies, and I like trekking to small villages. I am not interested in seeing too many tourists. In my opinion, the positive thing about Muang Sing would be, that I could walk on my own to small hilltribe towns. My concerns about Phongsali: maybe it will be rather cold and foggy in mid of january? ... and to be honest, I travell to Laos, because I want to ...

Alternative to Vang Vieng?

Posted by freezabird1 on 5/1/2011 at 02:03

Hey all, Am planning my trip to Laos and Vang Vieng sounds and looks like a beautiful place I kinda don't wanna miss... Except I don't really need to get wasted and watch Friends with a bunch of Europeans all the way in Laos and it sounds that that's the whole thing in Vang Vieng. Is there anything real left about that place, is it skippable or is there a good alternative around? Mind you, loved the at parties Koh Phangan but that was 10 years ago and I really want something else for this tri ...

Worst bus trip ever

Posted by keatonec on 28/11/2010 at 18:05

I just wanted to say that myself and my girlfriend were just on the worst bus ever. It was a minibus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng and I had heard that it was bad, but not this bad. This driver was a maniac and the road itself was crazy windy. I don't think the driver knew how to use his brakes, he was taking corners at at least 45-50 kph. I don't get carsick but this ride was nuts. Has anyone else experienced this? and also is the ride to Vientiane as bad? I have heard that it is. ...

should we skip southern Laos?

Posted by wildernessofsweets on 17/12/2010 at 06:11

I love this site - if only it had been around for our first trip to SE Asia over 7 years ago. Wondering if we should skip southern Laos during our short 3 weeks trip through southern Vietnam and Cambodia. We're fairly experienced and independent travels but seems like the highlights of Laos for most visitors are in the north. We like exploring small parts of a country so we have excuses, I mean, reasons to visit again. any advice for leaving out Laos completely or sitting for hours on a bus t ...

I'm not really looking for the "backpacker" type experience with lots of partying ,etc. I really want to ...

Trekking in Northern Laos (Vieng Phouka and Muang Khua)

Posted by dmlid on 23/1/2009 at 05:38

Hi I'm travelling round Northern Laos for 3 weeks next month. To kick off, I've booked the 3 day Akha Trail out of Vieng Phouka on Monday feb 16 and I'm looking for trekking companions (partly to bring down the cost, but mainly for the company!). I booked through Green Discovery but its run by the Vieng Phouka tourist office (who are slightly cheaper but more difficult to book with from the UK). I'm planning on heading up to Muang Khua aft ...

Vientiane to Pak Lai by boat

Posted by kahrani on 16/2/2009 at 12:14

I was hoping to catch the slowboat from Vientiane up to Pak Lai next week, then onto Sainyabuli and LP via bus. Does anyone have any up-to-date info about the boat trip - is it still running, roughly how many times a week etc? There seems to be a lack of info on the net about it - and I can't even find a section on Sainyabuli on travelfish! Relying on my library copy of LP Laos (which I won't be able to take with me...) Thanks xx ...

Bolaven Plateau Bike/Motorbike Questions

Posted by caseyprich on 11/10/2010 at 07:49

I'm trying to get together some people to go to the Bolaven Plateau but have a few questions that need answering. To anyone who has experience going either the short or the long loop - Can you do it on a bicycle? If so, how many days did it take? Is it a solo experience or need a friend? How slippery are the roads for an inexperienced motorbiker? If so, how many days did it take? Any thoughts at all on the subject of the Bolaven Plateau would be appreciated. ...

Transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng - Options?

Posted by jleetravel on 1/12/2010 at 14:44

First of all Id like to say thanks to all these amazing comments & feedback on this forum from some notable Laos travellers! Have gathered some great info for my trip end of this month! I have been trying to find info on other forms of transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng other than the early morning buses ... as Air Asia has yet again delayed our flight schedule times and now we arrive 6hrs later than expected - and therefore miss the last bus that seems to be at 1:30pm in the aftern ...
