Luang Prabang to Pakse to Don Kohn -> in one day?

Posted by cdwy0142 on 28/11/2010 at 17:53

Hi everyone - I'll be spending a few weeks in Laos (from Dec 8 to Dec 21) and I was wondering if it was possible to get from LP down to Don Khon and the 4000 islands in one day. I am booked on the Laos Air flight from LP to Pakse which gets in at 12:30PM. I am wondering if that is too late to get the bus or a sawngthaew down to Ban Nakasang from the 8KM bus terminal in Pakse? The LP guide says that transport is available until 3PM I am just wondering if in reality (and given the vagaries ...

Activities around Vientiene?

Posted by travellingsarah on 21/11/2010 at 18:29

I live in Hanoi and unexpectedly have to go to Vientiene next weekend to get a new visa. I've been to Vientiene before, and wasn't particularly inspired then, so don't really want to spend the 3 nights in town. I was thinking of hiring a motorbike and heading out to Phou Khao Khouay NP for a night or two, but anyone got any other suggestions of how to make the most of our 3 days there? ...

Travelling from Laos to Hanoi

Posted by diablohowes on 23/11/2010 at 20:22

Hi guys, We're currently in Vang Vieng in Laos, and we're aiming to be in Hanoi in about 6 days time. We're thinking of heading to Luang probang tommorow on the 6 hour bus. I know there is a very long and "interesting" bus journey that does go straight to Hanoi and there is the alternative of heading back the 9 hours to Vientiane and getting a slightly more comfortable bus from there to Hanoi. I'm just wondering if there is a good route for getting to Hanoi that we can take tha ...

Buying Mozzie Nets in Thailand

Posted by teamika on 20/11/2010 at 01:46

I am assuming that this is easy answer but assumptions being what they are... I will be travelling around Northern Thailand and into Laos on a rented moto in February. Can I purchase a decent mosquito net in Chiang Mai prior to setting out on the bike or should I schlep one with me on the flight. Thanks! ...

*Urgent* question about Lao Air

Posted by glomer on 20/11/2010 at 00:18

This is a repost. I am having no end of problems getting Vietnam Air to honor my ticket from Hanoi to Luang Prabang because of a change of name/passport number due to marriage. The exact same flight is offered by Lao Air. Is it safe to purchase tickets via their website? I know there have been problems in the past, but am not sure what the current situation is. We are scheduled to leave for our honeymoon in a couple of weeks, and I'm afraid of getting stuck in Hanoi. Please advise! ...

Luang probang back to Thailand Islands?

Posted by patricialalonde on 18/11/2010 at 02:03

I am taking my family to Luang Probang via Chiang Mai and the two slow boats which is approximately three days of travel. We want to leave LP and head to the islands in Thailand (Phuket or Ko Samui) around Dec 20th. I have checked into flights, but for 5 people we are looking at over $2000US. Can anyone recommend a fairly quick route out that won't cost a fortune and take several days or any tips on finding cheap airline tickets? We would very much appreciate any help or insight. ...

Help please - booking flights with Laos Airlines

Posted by Brisbod on 25/8/2008 at 10:51

Further to my post last week on booking flights, we want to fly from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang on 13 Oct and Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai on 16 Oct. I have first checked on the internet and checked with travel agents in Austalia about fare prices and availability. We can get a flight with Vietnam Airlines for the first leg (which is actually code shared with Laos Airlines flight). However, the travel agent said we need to book any Laos Airlines flights on the internet - they can't book these ...

Laos seems Expensive!

Posted by TheNewGuy8 on 6/11/2010 at 17:57

At least comparatively. Laos seems way more expensive than Thailand. I'm in Vientiane, went to the big indoor market today and the scarves, even with bargaining, were all at least 60,000 kip, most of the ones with natural dyes were at least 100,000, almost $12. I'm not saying its outrageous, but for SE Asia it seems high. I was in Thailand last and everything seemed much cheaper there. Tuk tuk rides here in VTE have all been at least $2 a piece, while in Chiang Mai they were usually never ...

River trip

Posted by SEQfunbod on 9/8/2009 at 10:13

I'm new here, and theres so much to read. I heard that the 2 day boat trip from Thailand to Luang Prabang isn't worth it. But, theres a better one from Luang prabang. I read all the messages on the 'slow boat' up there, and it sort of confirms its a bit ordinary. Can you guys tell me about this other boat trip from Luang prabang? How long does it take, where does it go, do you come back by the same boat, whats there when you get there. thanks ...

Camera shop in Vientiane

Posted by bails87 on 6/11/2010 at 22:50

I'll cut to the chase: I got drunk and I lost my camera! However, I'm going toVientiane tomorrow morning, is there a decent choice of electronics shops? Or a 'main' mall or something like that to go to, because I'd like to get a replacement as soon as possible. I'm guessing it's not going to be like the choice I'd have in Bangkok, but it'll have to do. Thanks in advance, Bails ...
