Boats not running from Huay Xai to Pakbeng

Posted by somtam2000 on 16/2/2010 at 10:43

Due to an "incident" involving a luxury cruiser on the Mekong River (some travel agents here in Huay Xai are saying it sunk, others that it is "broken") all boat travel between Huay Xai and Pakbeng has been suspended due to low water levels. I've been told that boat travel from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang continues as per normal. If you're in Huay Xai and want to get the boat you need to go north to Luang Nam Tha then Udomxai and south to Pakbeng to get on the boat -- I'd say not worth ...

Travelling by boat in Laos, an update

Posted by somtam2000 on 1/3/2010 at 16:45

I'm just wiping off the dust, having just handed back my bike, 960km older, in Luang Nam Tha, and here's a little update on the boats according to either travel agents here in LNT, my own experience or other traveller reports. Boat on the Nam Tha river: not running. Boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang: not running Here are ones that are running. Trip time based either on my own experience or what other travellers who actually caught the boat said. Note agents in each town routinely say ...

VIDEO: The slow boat trip from Hat Sa to Muang Khua

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/3/2010 at 08:32

This was my first attempt at video, so excuse the shaky hand and the out of focus bit when I tried to zoom it. Those who have been on this river in wet notice may notice just how clear the water is -- in the wet it is the colour of coffee with milk. The music is by a Khmer artist, Ros Sereysothea and the song "Chnam oun dop prammuy" translates as "I'm 16". Nothing to do with Laos I know -- it just happened to be what I was listening to as the time and seemed like a good fit. It is a be ...

Floating the Mekong from Laos to Cambodia

Posted by rsthomas on 11/8/2008 at 09:20

Greetings all! I was wondering if there is a way to float down the Mekong from Laos and into Cambodia. I am going to be traveling in Laos from Bokeo to Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng to Vientiene. From Vientiene I want to head to Siem Reap in Cambodia. However rather than flying or bussing, I thought it would be really cool to take a river trip from Laos into Cambodia. Is this possible?? Have any of you done it?? If so, can you please take the time to explain to me the best way. Thank you ...

Can one purchase Vietnam Air tickets from Vientiane to LP on the ground?

Posted by glomer on 13/3/2010 at 08:07

My husband and I have read the article on Lao Air's safety record, as well as a number relevant of posts, and have decided that we would prefer to use another carrier in traveling from Vientiane to Luang Prabang (this will be our first overseas trip as parents...please don't judge the paranoia!). Is it possible to purchase Vietnam Air tix between the above destinations in Vientiane, or should we do so from home as part of an extended itinerary? Thanks.... ...

Passenger train now running across Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge

Posted by JavaJunkie on 16/3/2010 at 12:39

Just wanted to let people know that there is a passenger train running from Nong Khai, Thailand, across the Friendship Bridge to Laos. Departure times coincide with the arrival of the overnight trains from Bangkok, and obviously they are catering to those travellers -- although our train arrived almost two hours late and the cross-border train was scheduled to have left all ready, it waited for everyone. Cost was 20B per person, and did immigration right on the train platform (same in Laos sid ...

From Bangkok to Si Phan Don

Posted by alexrifa on 14/3/2010 at 22:46

Hi, I am planning to travel to SE Asia with my partner next July, for a couple of months. We will be landing in Bangkok and we were planning to cross Laos to visit Vietnam (our main focus). However, I was seeking advice on what route to take. In the beginning I had thought about Bangkok, Sukothai, Chiang Mai and take a cruise to Luang Prabang ; however, I have been talking to some friends recently and they told me about the 4,000 islands in Si Phan Don, and how Laos is much better th ...

From Laos (either Vientiane or LuangPrabang) to Hanoi by car??

Posted by Asia2010 on 1/3/2010 at 05:53

Hi everyone, My friends and I are planning a trip around SouthEast Asia this summer, and are a bit stuck when it comes to reaching Hanoi from Laos. We've so far seen two options, none of which really suit us: - either take a Lao Airline flight to Hanoi which already costs about 110€ (although we're still months away!!) and does not seem to be one of the safest airlines - or take a 30+ hours bus ride across the border, when so many tourists report online that they've been ripped off ...

WARNING for cyclists and motorcyclists on the Phongsali Rd

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/2/2010 at 17:07

This morning on the road from Boun Neua to Phongsali I fended off an armed attack by two lowlife who, I believe, had followed me from Boun Neua. They set a trap where one hid and the other set his bike up like he had a problem with it. As I approached, he waved me down asking for help. As I slowed to a stop ( but luckily didn't turn off engine) the hidden guy ran outand tried to attack me with the butt of an AK47 but I was able to fight him off with my helmet (which I'd removed) and escap ...
