Entry into Vietnam from Laos on Motorbike - licence question

Posted by blksz on 6/6/2010 at 18:17

Hi Guys, As per the above. Later this year I'll be riding into Vietnam from Laos. The bike will have been bought earlier in my trip (in Vietnam) and will be registered in Vietnam under my name. Leaving Vietnam into Laos is not an issue. Taking the bike back into Vietnam I believe may cause a few small hiccups which is why I find myself here! I'll be sure to have my ownership and border papers in order however I have heard a rumour that I will need a license in Vietnam to ride my bike. I know ...

Motorbiking without license

Posted by thelonewanderer on 29/10/2012 at 00:16

Hi my first post on travel fish. Woo hoo. I'm out in Singapore until December, and am wanting to embrace the lands around me. I am passionately excited about motorbiking from Johor Bahru (Malaysia) and buying a bike there, through thailand, cambodia and vietnam until Han Noi, where I plan to fly back to Singapore after selling the bike on there. The main thing I am worried about is insurance. I am a cautious driver, but if someone else crashes into me, my travel insurance probably won't cove ...

Motorbiking in Asia

Posted by nodisitas on 29/7/2011 at 19:14

There are a lot of different, contradicting and, in particular, confusing stories on doing Asia by motorbike. Let me tell you this, it will stay confusing. You never know what you're gonna get. That's the deal. That's the adventure. I just a 40 day motor trip from Hanoi down to Saigon even further south to Ha Tien to cross the border into Cambodia, without any problems. They didn't even register the bike. Went on to Sihanoukville , Phnom Penh, and momentarily I landed in Siem Reap where ...

'Importing' a Vietnamese bike (in Viet name) into Thailand?

Posted by Bonny_Ricardo on 7/9/2011 at 13:23

Ok, so I've been in Vietnam (Bien Hoa) for 4 months now teaching, and I'm definitely ready to leave. Having rode motorcycles since I was 15 of all shapes and sizes, I really have to do a long trip on my uprated SYM Bonus. I've had it almost the full 4 months, and slowly got it working spot on, and can fix everything on it myself quickly and happily. A joy to work on, in fact. To that end, I'm fairly attached to it, and having lived in Thailand for a year before now, I want to try my hand at get ...

Hello! I am traveling with a friend considering trying one of the many motorcycle loops famous in sea. Unfortunately we are both inexperienced, and hoping for some advice as to some ways to get comfortable and prepared for taking the journey. Can anyone ( suggest easy day trips in northern laos or Vietnam? And recommendations for what might be an easier safer route than the king lor loop? I was looking at this loop, wondering if having paved roads would mak ...

Buying a Motorbike in Malaysia

Posted by sdel on 18/1/2013 at 20:39

Hi All, I've really enjoyed researching Travelfish and related forums so far, everyone here has great info. I'm curious if anyone knows about purchasing motorbikes in Malaysia, particularly the prices to expect on new versus used bikes. I'll be looking for a 125cc that can carry me + my girlfriend. We'll be flying into Malaysia from Bali but don't know exactly where, probably Johor Bahru, Melaka, or Kuala Lampur, so I'd also be interested if anyone knows whether there is price variation by loca ...

Buying a scooter in thailand/taking it elsewhere

Posted by littletimmy on 29/9/2012 at 09:24

Can scooters/bikes bought in Thailand be taken to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos? Only reason i ask, is i read on here Laos and Cambodia don't welcome each others bikes?! I look to buy a bike in a Thai friends name (as falangs cannot owner motors over there) who i think i can trust, and at the end of my SE loop, giving it to them as a gift. Questions, can i take a thai bike across boarders? Can i do it with the bike NOT being "mine". Any other laws i need to be aware of? I understand its ...

sapa-dien bien phu loop avoiding hanoi

Posted by cynthiacastle on 4/9/2012 at 10:06

Hello! My husband and I are traveling to Vietnam this November 1-12. We would like to do a motorbike loop in the Northwest, but I'd rather avoid Hanoi as it seems a bit crazy. So, the prospective itinerary is Sa pa- Lai Chau - Dien Bien Phu, then back to Sa Pa by either cutting through the park on route 279 or looping around routes 6-37-32 through Son La and Nghia Lo. Any recommendations on the itinerary? And my biggest concern is, how is the traffic around the roads up there? My husband h ...

Storage/parking in Hue, Vietnam

Posted by codehd7 on 5/6/2012 at 01:35

Hello fellow moto heads, I'm travelling thru Vietnam by moto from Saigon to Hanoi, and will soon reach Hue . I'm taking a side trip to Philippines for 2 weeks (flying there and back), and will want to keep my motorbike + riding gear somewhere safely until I return. Any ideas of what the best option would be? I've only thought of (1.) if the hotel where I'm staying in Hue is so friendly that they would keep it for me then I could do that; (2.) find a secured parking lot with good rates for lo ...

Protective Gear

Posted by lucasdg on 6/3/2012 at 18:51

Hi guys, As a motorcyclist in Australia, I am going to be on a motorbike or scooter at various times through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In Australia, when I ride I nearly always wear protective gear - kevlars, jacket, helmet, boots and gloves. Indeed, I have had an accident in which I went sliding on the road and it saved my skin. I'm just wondering about the attitudes toward motorbiking safety for western travellers through Asia. In blogs and pics about motorcycling through Asia i ...
