An essay on travel and photography by Kate Veitch

Posted by somtam2000 on 20/11/2018 at 03:59

In last week’s newsletter I wrote about taking pics. In response, Travelfish member Kate Veitch sent me this excellent and thought–provoking piece she wrote about travel, photography and especially how the latter has changed. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thoughts, as always, appreciated! Small eye by Kate Veitch First published in Griffith Review I BOUGHT my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, in 1973. I was eighteen and about to go travelling in South-East Asia, and the hippie tr ...

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Decisive Moment

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/5/2016 at 03:45

An excellent spoken word piece by Henri Cartier-Bresson, considered to be the father of modern photojournalism. While he's talking about his own work, there are many lessons for any photographer in this especially as he often talks of particular photos shown alongside his talk. As one of the comments reads: "When you see this and then you read magazines about photography they are so full of total rubbish about the latest camera that has 2 more megapixels than the previous model and lenses ...

Need a pocket compact with good images

Posted by tezza on 21/12/2013 at 00:35

I travel real light. For years that meant no camera - I get a real giggle these days from all those travellers dragging around the huge expensive digital SLRs with multiple lenses and other junk. Oh baby, they point it into the breeze on speedboats in bumpy conditions - what does that do to the lens? Operating systems? What if they fall head over turkey getting out of the boat as I did last Thailand trip - fortunately with Lady Tezza's ancient pocket cheapy, which was my backup camera (another f ...

Online pictures storage"¦. And question about theft.

Posted by SoloGirls on 24/1/2014 at 22:10

So I will be bring my DSLR with me and often shooting in Raw, though not always. I'm looking for online storage that allows me to keep the files just as they are, has a decent amount of space (I'll be gone for a month taking a ton of pictures), and is fairly quick with uploading. I realize I'll be having some spotty wifi along the way. I'm not interesting in having external drives or anything physical. I'll already be backing it up that way. And I don't want to be mailing stuff back home a ...

Taking photos of children

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/1/2013 at 02:38

British travel writer David Whitley, fresh off a trip to Laos has just published a piece titled "Is it ever ok to take photos of third world villagers?" that delves into the discussion of should tourists really be tramping around villages taking pics of the locals, and their children, in a "traditional" setting. David rightly asks, how would you feel if a bunch of complete strangers wandered into your front yard and took photos of your household behaving "traditionally& ...

HD Camcorder and Lapel Mike (Collar mike) - unusual items to buy?

Posted by Greatlookinguy on 2/10/2012 at 05:19

Hi there friendly folks of TravelFish, I am headed to South East Asia on a solo backpacking holiday and have started up an online video blogging website focussing on short & spicy travel secrets videos. So far, being a total amateur, I have used my trusty Nokia N95 brick of a phone (phone falls to floor, floor breaks - that kind of phone). Am thinking of investing in a proper (but cheap) HD hand held cam corder and a lapel/collar mike. Most people been talking about photography cameras on t ...

Using Smart Phone as Camera?

Posted by chopin on 19/11/2012 at 23:10

Hi all, I'm noob in camera, so please pardon my ignorance. I'd like to ask if anyone here using smart phone camera while travelling? I know that a proper camera is definitely better but if budget is an issue, should I buy a good smart phone (with a very good camera), or keep my old phone (Nokia 5800) and invest the money to get a decent cam like Canon S100 or Lumix LX5. The all important question is: with the recent progress in smart phones, can it replace a mid-range camera mentioned above? ...

Fake Canon lenses, batteries and B+W filter in Vietnam?

Posted by gorkreg on 3/1/2012 at 22:43

I am in Vietnam at the moment. In Hanoi I bought a couple of Canon batteries for my Canon EOS 5D and a B+W UV filter 77mm. Batteries were about 14 Euros each and the filter was about 17 Euros. The packets look exactly the same as the original Canon and it even says Canon on the batteries but at that prices it is difficult to believe that they are not an Asian copy (original Canon battery costs 90 Euros, B+W filter also a lot more). How do you know if they are a fake? I don't mind too much i ...
