Q's about traveling w/ DSLR - bag + sending pics home

Posted by csawala on 24/4/2011 at 10:27

I have been living and teaching English in Japan for the past 1.5years, and am leaving on July 29th for my "trip home" to Canada via 3-6months of SE Asia. I bought my Nikon D5000 body w/ 18-200mm lens in Canada, and have used it thoroughly since coming to Japan. Now that my travels are coming up, I know for sure I want to bring it along to make sure I get those quality photos I've come accustomed to taking. BAG: I have had a Lowepro Rezo 160AW bag for the camera, flash, extra battery ...

Waterproof Disposable Cameras

Posted by Phiddy on 14/12/2011 at 16:01

Are waterproof disposable cameras available in places like BKK, Chiang Mai, Vientiane and other big cities across SEA? I plan on taking a few with me rather than buying an expensive digital waterproof camera for times when it isn't really practical to use my expensive camera (such as when in the sea). I'm not a professional or anything so I'm obviously not too bothered about image quality (in fact there is something I like about the way pics taken with disposable cameras come out). Obviously t ...

Backing Up Photos

Posted by Phiddy on 8/12/2011 at 11:00

Hi, I'm travelling around SE Asia for about 3-4 months beginning in January, I'm planning on taking a high end P&S or possibly a dSLR with me. I have seen a lot on here about backing up pictures as you go but how exactly is this done? My immediate thought was to go to internet cafes and email the pics to myself, but last time I tried this it only let me send about 6 pics in each email - not handy when trying to back up hundreds at a time. Another option is tweeting / blogging them, but this ...

Paranoid about bringing my camera

Posted by mattocmd on 5/9/2010 at 09:39

I just wanted to get some opinions. So I am going to take my camera/lense...it's worth around $2500. I ordered this pacsafe daysafe 200 bag: http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=67 I am concerned if that's enough protection. Would that be fine in my room (or draw attention)? Also, if I go out during the day...like in the woods and rural areas, am I safe having this camera with me? I'll be in Cambodia for about a month or so...in Battambang, Siem Reap, etc. ...

DSLR or high-end P&S camera?

Posted by Seonach on 10/3/2011 at 06:10

Hi all, I'm planning a year-long RTW trip starting next August. So far on my travels I've only used an ordinary compact digital camera, but I find taking photos to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of travelling and want to upgrade. I've played around with my mother's DSLR and love the quality of the shots, but I don't know enough of the technical side of things to take full advantage of it. I'm also concerned about the weight and safety of a big camera during such a long trip. As a comprom ...

disposable waterproof camera, pros and cons?

Posted by Tomhamish on 19/2/2011 at 01:21

Im heading to SEA with my girlfriend for 3 months from the 10th of july. she is taking her small point and shoot cannon, and i'm taking my compact DSLR sony NEX-5. However neither of these cameras are waterproof, and i want to be able to take photos while snorkelling. I could borrow a waterproof olympus off a friend but that would mean 3 cameras between 2 people + chargers etc... seems a bit much! does anyone have any experience with disposable waterproof cameras? would this be a good alternat ...

What about tripods?

Posted by redchesus on 12/1/2011 at 02:19

Hi guys, I'm pretty torn about bringing a tripod on my 3 month trip to SEA. On the one hand, I'm trying to stay ultra light (my camera and lenses are already heavy enough!) and not check bags, so I'm not even sure I can get a tripod on the plane. On the other hand, I really don't want to miss out on great sunrise/sunset/evening photography. Does anyone have experience with this? What about the possibility of buying a cheap tripod once I get to SEA (cheap tripod > no tripod), has anyone done ...

Traveling with expensive camera

Posted by mattocmd on 22/1/2010 at 11:06

I am traveling Asia very soon with my new camera and lense (worth a little over $2,000). I've tried getting an insurance quote to cover everything but am never able to get a dollar figure on what insurance would cost. I've also considered a Pac safe bag to lock it up in guesthouses when I'm not there, but wondered if that would just bring too much attention. Or I could just take my chances but I would never feel comfortable leaving it behind in the shady cheap guesthouses that I like ...

Hi, a friend and I will be backpacking through south east asia for 13 weeks starting this November. We plan on using busses and train to get around and stay in not too pricey accommodation such as hostels. I enjoy taking good quality pictures while travelling and plan I plan on taking my Canon 400D DSLR camera for high quality shots and my Olympus Stylus 850 Shock & Waterproof compact camera for when the terrain gets a bit more rough and rocky!
