Mae Sot....border crossing into Myanmar - 1 day trip

Posted by Boohoo on 30/10/2015 at 06:07

Hi, So I find myself in Sukhothai and I'm wondering where to head next. I read that it is possible to hop into Myanmar for the day at this border crossing(or at least it was possible). Just wondering if this is still possible and what the formalities are...I.e do I retain my departure card for Thailand presuming border control hold my passport? Is it all worth it or not? If I head that way I was thinking of then heading south into Nam Tok for trekking possibilities. I don't have the time ...

Public transport from Kanchanaburi to Sukhothai

Posted by Clouds on 29/10/2015 at 03:26

After 2 nights in Kanchanaburi I would like to continue my trip up north with a visit in Sukhothai next; but without going back to Bangkok first. I'll be leaving from Kanchanaburi on the 22nd of November and have booked a hotel for the night in Sukhothai. I could find a bus from Kanchanaburi to Suphanburi (they run very regular every 20min). But impossible to find anything on the net to go on from there. Is there a bus from Suphanburi to Phitsanulok? FRom there it can)t be much troubl ...

Sprained ankle in Bangkok!

Posted by emmiebebe on 25/10/2015 at 14:10

So after using this site religiously in the lead up to my 8 week trip through Southeast Asia, my first post comes after spraining my ankle 2 days in. Just the worst luck. I've been really trying to tough it out, but after a day and a half of sucking it up the swelling is even worse, and I'm now worried about doing real damage that could ruin the rest of my trip. So I guess my question is twofold. First, does anyone have any suggestions for things to do in Bangkok that don't require a lot of wa ...

7 days in chiang mai...what to do?

Posted by alexizfresh on 5/10/2015 at 17:38

Hey all, 1st and foremost I want to thank everyone who participates in this forum and works on this website -- fantastic stuff. Planning my trip has been much easier with your help. Anyhow, I have 7 days planned in Chiang Mai from Nov 20-Nov 27. This is my honeymoon but we aren't really the sleep in bed all day kind of couple -- we traveled around the world, we want to see and do things! So far I have the following activities planned; 1) an all day cooking class 2) a full day at the elep ...

Hey all, I'm heading out to Thailand solo this upcoming December for two weeks, and I was interested in doing a short-term meditation retreat on the Andaman coast. I know that Chiang Mai is well known for its meditation retreats/classes, but I only have two weeks and still want to see the coast in addition to visiting Chiang Mai. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated! ...

Getting to Ao Phang-Nga from Krabi or Railay?

Posted by commadon on 13/9/2015 at 23:37

I am flying into Krabi Airport in late October, and want to do a kayaking tour of Phang Nga Bay the day after I arrive. I'm having trouble figuring out where I should stay and how I should get to Phang Nga Bay from Krabi. I could stay in Krabi Town, Phang Nga Town , or Yao Noi/Yao Yai. Later in my trip, I will also be staying at Railay for a few days, and that is an option as well. So, what is the best place to tour Phang Nga Bay from? Is it easy to organize something from Railay and/or Krab ...

Bangkok airport arrival late night

Posted by quotaquasi on 18/10/2015 at 18:18

So I'm a traveler from the USA and will arrive Bangkok airport around midnight. I'll need to book a hotel for one night nearby, and various hotels have included airport transfers. But I won't have a phone that works in Thailand until sometime the next day, when I can hopefully buy a Thai phone chip. It's always nice to have someone waiting to meet you at the airport, but as far as I can tell, all of the hotels ask for a phone call before they send their transport out. Should I just plan on taki ...

Songkhla for a few days, or still a bit unsafe.

Posted by Jadeknots on 13/10/2015 at 06:26

Hi. We're currently in Krabi, and we have accommodation booked in a few weeks in Melaka. We thought we'd like to slowly make our way down, stopping at a couple of places on the way over a week. Songkhla appealed but we were unsure how safe it would be, and onward travel the same. It seems there is continual trouble there. Is it serious enough for us to think about avoiding it? Most posts here are a few years old. Any current updates? Any alternative suggestions. Not interested in nightlife. ...

Women Who Have Traveled in SE Asia Alone?

Posted by emc on 15/11/2012 at 01:16

People keep telling me that it's fine as long as I am cautious, but I am worried because I like to travel off of the beaten path, to remote wilderness, to jungles and other unreachable and non-touristy places. Is it safe to take tuk-tuks alone as a woman to a nature reserve? Is it safe to hire guides to take me to jungles alone? Or should I really try to pull some other travelers along with me to stay safe? I am planning my trip to Thailand and perhaps Vietnam or Malaysia, and I am actually get ...

Have you already bought a guidebook? Will you?

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/9/2015 at 19:36

Shooting the breeze this morning to a friend in the same field about Q&A travel forums (like this one Trip Advisor, Thorntree etc etc) and she suggested (jokingly) that people should be asked if they have already purchased a guidebook to the country they're asking about. Technically this would be really easy to set up! But jokes aside, I think some of the questions are indeed just lazyweb at work (it's easier to ask the question online than open a guidebook) but if you're not buying a guide ...

What does it really cost to live in Bangkok at an expat?

Posted by somtam2000 on 6/7/2015 at 07:18

This is a great, very detailed cost breakdown for living in Bangkok as a European expat. The author has a conservative approach (note the insurance) without a big spend on booze, and this reads pretty on the money to me. Sure you could spend less -- you could also spend a lot more -- but I thought it is a handy counterpoint to the "living in Bkk on 350baht a day" stuff that tends to get a lot of traction online. ...
