Chiang Mai to Laos train or plane?

Posted by TommyKay on 12/1/2012 at 07:07

Travelling from south to north of thailand. Planning on leaving from Chiang Mai with my next destination being Laos (unsure really where in Laos I want to start off but Vientiane seems as good a place as any). So do I use train or plane? Whats the most hassle free option in terms of border crossing? The cheaper option may also be favoured! Flights are looking to be around £200, Ive had a look on seat61 and can't find anything about travelling from chiang mai.......... ...

Looking for Chiang Mai Accommodation Recommendations

Posted by Surefolly on 4/8/2014 at 12:18

Have been to Chiang Mai before (in 2003) and am looking for a new place to stay. I will be traveling with my wife and our two sons (ages 8 & 11). We'd like a low to mid-range place that is centrally located so we can walk to the various sites. Anything unique or different would be great. Just need a place that is clean and well run. Any advice is much appreciated. I've been doing some research online and there are so many hotels in Chiang Mai now - it's overwhelming. Thank you. ...

First Time to Southeast Asia: Thailand and Laos or just Thailand?

Posted by jcro on 6/12/2013 at 15:27

Hello! I am new to this site-found it while doing research for an upcoming trip to Thailand! My boyfriend and I are in our mid-twenties and will be able to visit Thailand Nov 2014 for about 26 days. We will be flying in and out of Bangkok from Seattle so will probably have 24 full days in Southeast Asia to work with. We are really active but also want to have a good combination of action/adventure and some relaxation. Right now, we really want to figure out how to split the time between the n ...

Booking first days accomodation in Bangkok online?

Posted by AK169 on 29/8/2014 at 08:08

Hi, My girlfriend and I are heading into Bangkok on 25th September, to start our 6 months travel around SEA. We were thinking it would be a good idea to book our first 2/3 days of accommodation online so that we don't have to worry too much when getting off the plane. The problem we are having is everything looks quite pricey and suspicious especially compared to what we've read on here. Any recommendation on specific sites we should be using? / Places to check out? Or are we better off, headin ...

24 day Itinerary Thailand

Posted by ManWithNoPlan on 27/8/2014 at 05:24

Hi, I've booked tickets for a solo trip to Thailand for 24 days starting in the middle of October. Just looking for any suggestions or tips on my itinerary. Here is a rough outline: 6 nights Bangkok at beginning 2 nights Ayutthaya 5 nights Krabi 4 nights Phi Phi 4 nights Lanta 3 nights BKK Home Is this a reasonable amount of time in each place? I have been to North Thailand before so this is pretty much a BKK+Islands oriented holiday. I was going to go to Khao Sok instead of Ayutthaya but no ...

Hua Hin or Krabi in July for honeymoon

Posted by Rosieni on 20/12/2012 at 17:21

Hiya, my partner and I are in the process of booking our honeymoon, so far we have flights to and from Thailand booked and are hoping to stay a couple of days in Bangkok, fly to Combodia for 3 or 4 days, a week in Koh Samui and a week in either Hua Hin or Krabi . I have been to Thailand twice before to Samui, Phuket and Hua Hin but it would be about 7 years ago (can't wait to get back). I liked Hua Hin but there are mixed reports on it now and have never been to Krabi so don't know what it ...

Thailand 30 days or longer with this itinerary

Posted by Hilde_1 on 22/7/2014 at 08:05

Hi everyone! We are 4 19-year old girls heading to SE Asia in December 2014. This will be our first longer trip ever. We will start in Vietnam, and stay there for 15 days. After this we'll explore Thailand. The question is - should we get a visa for 60 days or try to keep up with 30 days. Our very open plan looks like this: Bangkok Autthaya? Chiang Mai Chumpon/Surat Thani (from which place is it better to leave for Ko Tao and Ko Samui) maybe? Khao Sok National Park Ko Phi Phi Ko Lanta? Ko Li ...

2 Weeks for Adventure & Relaxation

Posted by hannahsquidge on 5/8/2014 at 07:55

Hi all, My boyfriend and I are planning a well deserved holiday in November and are thinking of heading to Thailand. We want a bit of adventure and to see some of the culture, whilst also having some beach time for R&R. We also fancy diving. So we're thinking of splitting the holiday into three sections - Bankok, National Park/Explore (e.g. Chaing Mai or Khao Sam rot), followed by some beach paradise and diving. Can anyone recommend a good itinerary based on this? We'd be travelling from a ...

First time family backpacking

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can help me?? I'm looking to take my teenage boys who are 14 and 15 backpacking in Thailand next Aug. I know this is possibly not the best time for us to go but due to school and work this is our only option. I'm completely clueless having never been out of Europe before. We are wanting to spend around 2 weeks travelling. So where is the best place to start, finish? Does anyone know if there is any voluntary work that we might be able to do for a couple of da ...

Box Jellyfish Risk?

Posted by pollitoriquito on 26/8/2012 at 10:03

I was reading of the seeming infestation of Langkawi by various species of lethal box jellies and, looking at the map, realized Ko Lipe is quite near this island plagued by the stingers. With Langkawi suffering from hundreds of stings yearly the situation is quite grave. I plan on going to Ko Lipe in early October, but my plan was to spend a lot of my time in the water swimming and snorkeling. Is it safe? Does anyone know of the risks of box jellies around the island? Would I be better off go ...

From yao yai to Ao nang or close by

Posted by lorean811 on 21/8/2014 at 14:25

Hi all. I'm new to this site so please bare with me. I'm going to thailand in January, and we are spending a few nights phuket, then over to yao noi for 3 nights then yao yai for a few. From here we are going to krabi. This is where I'm confused. Krabi is just a stop off for a few nights before our flight but I thought it would be nice to stay near a beach and I heard ao nang was nice, then into krabi town to get our bus to the rest of our journey. Thing is I'm really unsure of how to get from ...

Your advice in other posts has already been hugely helpful (my original plan also included Southern Vietnam and Cambodia). I've already done a fair bit of research but would greatly appreciate tapping ...

Thailand getting tough on overstays

Posted by DLuek on 22/7/2014 at 09:35

In the past, people who overstayed their Thai visas paid 500 baht per day to a max of 20,000 baht. Even people who stayed in the country illegally for many years paid their 20K at the airport or border and left; many even came back into Thailand the same day. I feel this was overly lax. But it now appears that Thailand is going straight from overly lax to overly harsh. Here are the new rules, the subject of this Thai Visa thread: Overstay between 90 days and a year, offender is forbidden from r ...

Hostel exchange in Bangkok - voluntary work in return for a free bed

Posted by Eldwyer90 on 21/8/2014 at 06:51

Hi guys, I am currently coming towards the end of my travels and I have two weeks to kill before I fly home. I am just wondering if anyone is aware of any hostels in Bangkok or surrounding areas that offer a free bed for the night in return for voluntary work. I would ideally like a base so that I can use my last 15 days applying for work back home in the UK. As you can imagine, money is a bit tight as it's towards the end of my travels! Any help/advice would be really appreciative! Eleanor ...
