Surin Elephant Festival 14.-16. November 2014

Posted by Juljitschka on 12/11/2014 at 17:59

Dear all, I'd like to see the Elephant Festival in Surin from 14th to 16th Nov. I'd very much appreciate any advice on the following questions: 1. Is it a free festival that mostly takes place on the streets of Surin? Or do I have to buy tickets? If so, could I still get some on location or may they already be sold out since I'm a bit late?! (-: 2. Could you recommend any cheap place to stay in Surin; I don't mind staying in a dorm? 3. What' the best way to reach Surinam from Laos? I could ...

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could help give me some itinerary advice! I am 22 years old traveling with 3 other girls my age to THAILAND!! I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do, but I was hoping someone could help me out with how long we should plan to stay in each place, good budget accommodations, and just general backpacking advice. We are planning to leave Toronto on May 24th and arrive in Bangkok on the 25th. Here is a list of the places we want to see: -Bangkok -Chiang Mai - ...

Posted by altmtl on 5/11/2014 at 19:48

Here's a route I'm thinking about in Feb. BK to Pak Chong (Khao Yai National Park) do a 1 1/2 day tour Loei & Chiang Khan for 3-4 days maybe Ubon T. (Red Lotus Lake) On to Nan and/or Chiang Mai , then Pai/Mae Hong Son It's about 2 - 3 weeks in all Just wondering the best way to get to Chiang Mai from Loei (maybe with a stop in between) or a direct bus if I don't go to Nan. I hate overnight buses but may have to bite the bullet here. Wondering if some of these spots will just be red ...

Extending Thai Visa within Thailand...

Posted by altmtl on 9/11/2014 at 11:22

I thought I posted this already but I can't find it sorry... I have a single entry 60 day tourist visa which I plan to extend for 30 days for 1900 baht. How soon can I actually apply for the extension? I know most people do it a week or two before. Is it possible to do it at the airport when arriving or a few weeks later. Just curious. Thx ...

CHeap Lonely Planet Books

Is it still possible to buy the cheap LP and Rough books in Bangkok. When I was there last time they were available at a very reasonable cost (cheap enough not to feel too bad about abandoning them at your last stop!). ANy suggestions on where to find them? ...

Spent $3000 in 24 days..oops?

Posted by roro1990 on 8/11/2014 at 22:50

Have I way overspent? I thought Thailand was gonna be cheap but a look through my bank statements has revealed that I've spent 3000 dollars in a little over 3 weeks. A summary of what I've done: I've mainly stayed in hostels but sometimes hotels, I've eaten Thai food but usually in restaurants, I've drank a lot of beer and cocktails. I've eaten at Gaggan (crazily expensive restaurant), I've went to the hospital 3 times and been on 2 organized day trips. I've got a massage nearly every day. Does ...

November Weather

Posted by vwgtivr6 on 4/11/2014 at 18:53

My wife and I are traveling to Thailand for the first time November 14th - 28th and I am trying to get a good idea on the weather. Numerous sites are saying different things. We are staying in Ko Phi Phi the 17 - 21, Koh Yoa Yai 21 - 24, and Koh Pangen the 24 - 28. The Thailand Meteorology Report is saying that it is going to be a complete wash with thunderstorms basically the entire time we are there, while other sites are saying its going to be fine. Anyone currently living there or been ...

Chiang Mai - Nov 8 Mass Lantern Release Event

Posted by bharpiy on 28/10/2014 at 11:33

Hi, I arrive in Thailand (Bangkok) on Nov 7th. I know the Mass Lantern Release Event is in Chiang Mai on Nov 8th. I do not have a ticket for it and am unable to find one from here (USA). Do you advice I should still try to get to Chiang Mai by the 8th and try to get a ticket once I'm there? Or do you feel that chances of getting a ticket are very low and I should just spend the first few days in Bangkok and then go to Chiang Mai later (I'd miss the Nov 8 event). Thanks Piyush ...

Hotels in Bangkok

Posted by Connal on 30/10/2014 at 16:39

Hi, Im flying into BKK in a few weeks with the girlfriend, its our first time travelling like this and our first time to Thailand. So I was hoping for some advice regarding finding hotels in Bangkok. What is the area of Bangkok that you would recommend we stay? As this is the start to our journey, we don't mind staying in the tourist-y areas and don't really want to be miles away from the things we want to do (also some ideas for what to do in Bangkok would be appreciated). Is there a particu ...

Family Accomodation in Bangkok

Posted by limpingfox on 30/10/2014 at 12:14

Hi, Travelling to Bangkok in January and looking for a place to stay to explore the city. I'll be with my wife and kids aged 7 and 8 so we'll be looking for a convenient location that allows us to easily explore the city rather than close to late night bars and clubs. Would happily consider guest house \ apartment or even hotel and happy to spend up to £100 per night. Welcome your recommendations. Thank you. ...

Traveling the remote province of Loei

Posted by changnoi1 on 29/10/2014 at 00:13

OK this is not a travel question but a kind of "Just Back Report". I am living in Khon Kaen, the center of North East Thailand. And in my free time I like to ride motorbike or just travel in Thailand, Laos or Cambodia. And my favorite province (nearby) is Loei . Thai people tend to say "Pai Loei" as in "Go far away". Well and that is what the province of Loei used to be .... far and remote in the beautiful mountains. And actually it still is. Riding up route 2331 ...

Really disappointed by phi phi

Posted by roro1990 on 28/10/2014 at 01:05

Anyone else feel this way? I am a young guy of 23 so obviously you'd expect phi-phi to be like paradise for me with the constant partying. But as soon as I stepped off the boat I hated it. 20baht tax for entering the island (strange) and the place smelled so bad. The scenery, whilst nice, was nothing compared to the likes of Raileh for me. I mean Raileh was 1000x nicer. I'm not sure what the big deal about this island is. I've left after 1 and a half days. The repetitive overly loud crappy techn ...

My wife and I plan to visit Bangkok in December 2014. From Bangkok we would like to go to Ayuttaya and Lopburi to see all the must see sights and also the Sunflowers fields near Lopburi. What is the most convenient and safe way of transport we should use? Train? Bus? Minivan? We plan to stay overnight one night in Ayuttaya and one night in Lopburi. Will we have enough time to see all we want to see with one night stay in each place? Any recommendations on clean and comfortable hotels to stay o ...

Chiang Khong

Posted by MADMAC on 26/10/2014 at 04:01

Went there this weekend and was really surprised at how different it was from the description in Lonely Planet. I expected a total backwater, very quiet, with nothing going on. Wrong. Lonely Planet says there's no 7-11 there and the people of the town are happy about that. There is a 7-11 there. Must have been opened after they published. Lonely planet says it's a great place to go if you want to do nothing. The riverside street was closed to traffick and there were hundreds - maybe a thousand ...

Honeymoon in Thailand

Posted by Mandira on 6/10/2014 at 02:38

Hi There I'm looking for help to plan my honeymoon in November 2014. We definitely wanted to include lazy beaches, parties, a little sight seeing to get a flavor of the local culture, shopping and of course, romance ! We'll fly in to Bangkok and spend 2-3 days there... Also wanted to take in a live Muay Thai fight so I suppose that's Pattaya. From what I see on weather reviews, November is heavy monsoon in Koh Samui, Ko Tao etc. Is this right? And how bad does it get? We don't want to be c ...
