Getting around Bangkok questions

Posted by daydreamfarmer on 20/1/2014 at 12:05

Hi everybody - I'll be visiting Bangkok for the 1st time Feb 11th - Feb. 16th. I hope things calm down some by that time...either way I'll be there. I have been researching this forum for quite some time and have found a lot of useful information posted by people here. I do have a couple of questions about getting from point A to B in Bangkok and would like to see what recommendations people here might have. I arrive in Bangkok by train at Hualamphong early on the 11th. I can't check into ...

Posted by somtam2000 on 21/1/2014 at 05:40

Thailand has declared a 60-day State of Emergency starting tomorrow (Wednesday). The news is still breaking, so light on details, will update this thread as more becomes clear. As it stands the SOE has no curfew. It covers Bangkok the the surrounding area. The SOE gives agencies power to impose curfews, detain suspects without charge, censor media, ban political gatherings of more than 5 people and declare areas off-limits. Some brief media coverage includes: Reuters AsianCorrespondent BBC Wi ...

A good place to post up in Thailand for cheap?

Posted by Skittens on 19/1/2014 at 09:00

Hi. I'm a writer currently in Thailand. I'm going to be doing some traveling around Asia with a friend for the next month or so, but after that I'm going to be looking for a place to post up and get some work done. Ideally I would like to find a place that is relatively inexpensive and laid back, a mix of travelers and locals, and the opportunity to socialize when I want but also a place to recede to when I want to work or chill or read. Of course this is all personal preference, but I'm ope ...

Phi Phi to Phang Nga

Posted by jonster1 on 19/1/2014 at 10:51

Quite a specific question, but I'm struggling to fit everything in to my itinerary. I'll be staying in Phi Phi in March. My plan is then to go up to Phang Nga (via Phuket ) for a trip around the hongs before travelling over to Koh Phangan. In a bid to maximise available time in my 2 week trip my plan is to leave Phi Phi on the early morning ferry to Phuket, take a bus (either public or minibus) up to Phang Nga and then get on one of the half day, afternoon tours. Sayan's website suggests they ...

Golden Triangle

Posted by sarah6969pink on 17/1/2014 at 11:52

Hi All, Firstly wanted to say thanks to everyone who has answered one of my posts on here before - you're all really helping me put together our dream honeymoon trip We had originally ruled out the Golden Triangle area due to time. But we're now thinking of cutting back on other bits of the trip to go up there. However I've read some mixed things!! The lure of seeing three countries altogether, a trip on the Mekong river and the possibility of popping ito Myanmar and / or Laos for a day each ...

Trip Report Phu Nam Ron - Visa run only 200km from Bangkok

Posted by relaxedTrev on 19/1/2014 at 22:12

Trip report from Phu Nam Ron, closest border to Bangkok for Visa extensions being only 200km via Kanchanaburi and or quickest overland route to Myanmar. I left Bangkok in the morning taking the shuttle bus which leaves throughout the day at 20-40 minute intervals. The minibus cost $110 Bhat, but equally I could have bused or the train. The mini van dropped me at the Kanchanaburi bus station. From there we then caught the 11:30am (also 10:30 & 12:30) bus from Kanchanaburi to Phu Nam R ...

Islands: Gulf vs. Andaman Sea

Posted by Tetso on 17/1/2014 at 16:29

Planning a trip back to Thailand for some island / snorkeling time and wanted to get some advice on the Gulf vs. the Andaman Sea. I've been to Ko Tao (AMAZING) and Ko Pha Ngan (both in the Gulf) - but that was 10 years ago. I really liked Ko Tao, it wasn't too crowded, it was quiet for the most part and had easy access to amazing snorkeling all around the island. I'm looking for something similar with good snorkeling - no need for big hotels / resorts. Ko Kood and Ko Mak look good. I was a ...

Another Bangkok Layover Question

Posted by SoloGirls on 18/1/2014 at 23:21

Sorry guys"¦ I've been reading through the other questions on this topic, but everything seems to be domestic or in regard to using two different airlines. I'm looking to book a flight on Air Asia from HCMC to Phuket. There are a few options. One of them has a 1.5 hour layover. I could assume they wouldn't offer this option if it weren't doable, but I've also had airlines give me a 40 minute layover in Atlanta. If you've been to Atlanta's airport, you'd know how ridiculous that is. ...

Any recommendations on budget Andaman island hopping during Dec-Jan?

Posted by cbg0927 on 7/12/2013 at 23:02

Hello all - arrived in Bangkok a few days ago for my first time. Already loving it here. I'd like to head down to the coast and start visiting some islands. I'll probably be doing this for roughly a month before I head north. Does anyone have any recommendations on budget island hopping during the high season months? I'm a solo male backpacker and am adventurous and don't mind staying in very budget accommodation. Some islands I have initial interest in: Coral and Raya islands? Ko Rok Ko Chan ...

Thap Sakae (can't find much info) - Prachuap Khiri Khan - Petchaburi - Amphawa Market - Kanchanaburi - Sangkhaburi. (I've been to Bang Saphan) - should I skip Thap Sakae or Petchaburi? Not sure I want to go to Hua Hin, but do want to visit some parks and go off the beaten track a bit. Of course I'll be looking for budget p ...

Looking for a nice beach in Thailand with yoga and meditation classes available

I am travelling to Thailand in early January. I've been a few times before but this time am hoping to do something slightly different. I'd love to find a nice, safe beach to stay on with a laid back vibe, where there are some good budget accommodation and food options and also places to attend yoga and meditation classes. If anyone knows of anywhere that might fit this description I'd love to hear about it. Thanks ...
