Is Thailand safe for American travel?

Posted by Airborne082 on 22/4/2014 at 20:34

I have read the travel warnings and understand the diplomatic unrest in certain areas. My mother-in-law (Thai native) recommends I do not travel at this time. We went on a family vacation for new year 2006-07 when the coup just started and had no problems!I plan on backpacking solo this time and head up north to Chaing Mai/Rai. Any advice/ recommendations? (with my work schedule this is my only opportunity to travel)I plan on July 2-July 16 ...

Border crossing bus/train ticket online reservation

Posted by lillalla on 16/4/2014 at 05:58

Hi! Does anyone know where I could reserve or buy a cheap ticket crossing (any) border out of Thailand and back (any form of transport)? I need to get a double-entry visa (I'm a Croatian citizen so I need a visa), and the embassy insists that I show some proof of leaving Thailand and coming back so they can issue the double-entry visa. I don't need to actually end up using these tickets, so the cheaper the better. Flights are of course an option, but I'd have to spend at least 60 eur, and I'd r ...

Bedbugs! Need urgent advice!

Posted by karibou on 5/3/2014 at 10:59

Checked into a (Travelfish recommended) guesthouse in Khao Sok today, and after I turned out the lights I discovered i was being attacked by a large number of bedbugs. I'm a middle-aged woman traveling alone for the first time in Asia and had never encountered them before. Told the owner (late at night) who verified the problem and had me pack up and move to another room. I have no faith that when I turn off the lights again, a new swarm of bedbugs won't come out over here. So I will probably st ...

How to find a hostel?

Posted by travelbug777777 on 21/4/2014 at 14:39

I'm going to Thailand for around 5 weeks. I know the islands and places I am planning to visit, but I want to wing it with timing, so I'm not booking any accommodations in advance. I was wondering what the best way is to find accommodations. Do you just ask a taxi to take you to the nearest hostel? I'm thinking of having three or four possibilities. But even then do I just ask a taxi to take me to one of them? ...

Thailand... How much to bring?

Posted by RowanV on 19/4/2014 at 18:20

So here's the story, I'm 23 and live in Ireland, and have just been bitten by the travel bug big time!!! I'm working in an entry level job that pays OK, I'm currently saving for my trip but am not quite so sure as to how much my trip is going to cost me. I'm hoping to travel around south east Asia for a year, then head onto Australia to work for a year. I'm not planning to live like a king and am happy to eat street food, sleep in cheap accommodation... I guess I would be looking to go out every ...

My start to life on the open road. What shouldn't be missed?

Posted by SimplyKitty on 15/4/2014 at 10:32

Good Day to you Travel Fish Folk... I am a 31 year old female closing down on the easy life in the west and hitting the road on my own on the 3rd November. Bit of a late starter...? Yeah well no one else was going to pay for me to do this so I have had to work my a** off and still will be until the month before I go.. The plan is simple - I have ended work and will be on the road for a minimum of 5 years. I don't assume this will be an easy ride so spare me the lectures...[img]smileys/wink.gif ...

Chiang Khong crossing to Laos

Posted by Pjotra on 10/12/2013 at 02:42

For those, wanting to cross the Mekong at Chiang Khong : as from December 12, 2013, the old ferrycrossing from Chiang Khong stops to exist, as is the Visa office on the Laos side. From then you have to use the new BRIDGE, 9km. downstream from Chiang Khong ( 4km. on the road, then left and another 5 km) I am probably the first to cross on that date, when I experience difficulties on either side of the river, I will report about it later. Hopefully the old taxfree, which used to be very inetersti ...

Say it five times fast now. Any and all thoughts/criticisms will be appreciated. But keep in mind I have already booked my flights and these dates are more or less set in stone. Mainly, would be interested to know in: (1) Jungle Treks/Camping stuff in Chiang Mai . Anybody have any first-hand experience? (2) Koh Samui---how easy is it to travel among the islands? Can you do Ang Thong National Marine Park in one day, or does it take 2 days to really experience it? Saturday, June 28, High No ...

Booking Tours on Ko Phi Phi

Posted by simonesa on 13/4/2014 at 20:25

I am looking to book a snorkeling tour that includes a short stop at Maya Bay (I already know what I am getting myself into!). However, I would like to get to Maya Bay early in the morning, because, based on reviews, this is the best time. So, If I am staying 10-15 minutes outside of Ton Sai Bay, can I just walk into town at 6 am and book a tour for that day, or will I be better off booking the tour while in Ton Sai Bay the night before? Also, if anyone could recommend a touring company with to ...

Lanta Sunmoon Bungalow/Sun Moon Bungalows

Whilst researching for accommodation on Ko Lanta I was concerned to read these reviews for the above guesthouse where I'd been considering staying. I thought I'd share them as they make for a terrifying read! Has anyone had similar guesthouse experiences in Thailand? And would anyone be able to recommend an alternative budget place to stay? I've two nights booked at the Chan-Cha-Lay, 55 Uttarakit Rd, Krabi - following Travelfish's recommendations for a fan room at the back for 500B a night ...

How far are the deluxe garden bungalows from the beach and how steep is the walk? If one.books a snorkelling trip do u have to walk to another part of the island to join.the boat?
