Ko Laoliang Resort is on a small lump of granite rising precipitously from the Andaman sea roughly midway between Lanta and Lipe. The resort pays rent to the owners, the Ko Phetra birds’nesting group, which gives them the sole right to have tourist accommodation, climbing and diving in the area. Poseidon is a flashpacker/lower midrange place about 5-6km south of the main Khao Lak township built on a headland overlooking a small estuary - across which is a big expanse of beach leading abt 8km to Thap Lamu which is the port for the Similans trips. All of Poseidon’s old bungalows were at least 10m over the estuary, but the lower ones were cleaned up by the tsunami and replaced by better quality ones on the higher side of the path from restaurant to beach. The Baan Kaew Guesthouse is simply lovely. Its location is fabulous (a five minute walk to the amazing Night Bazaar, directly across from a lovely wat), the staff are accommodating, caring and warm, and the atmosphere very gentle and relaxed. We visited during the firecracker happy Loy Krathong festival, and this Guesthouse was the perfect place to take a break from the crowds.
