Laos - sandals/boots for trekking

Posted by indiansummer on 22/1/2010 at 04:12

Hi, I know this subject comes up quite a bit but I just wanted to make sure that I could get advice specific to the area and time of year I'm travelling so apologies for any repetition. I'm going to be in Northern Laos for a month from the end of Feb and am planning on doing a fair bit of trekking while I'm there, including the Gibbon experience. I just have no idea what to wear on my feet - should I take boots? Also, do I need to worry about leeches at this time of year? Thanks! ...

Just wondering what people thought about taking a small flipbook of picture cards to help with any language barrier. (Mostly food, transport items). Would it be useful? Any ideas for other pictures? Cheers! ...

Hi Folks I'm planning a trip through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Bali next month and I've already got all the appropriate vaccines (Hep A, typhoid, dyptheria, tetanus and malaria tabs). Somebody told me that you may need to provide proof of these vaccines at some border crossings. Does anyone know if there's any truth in that at all? Thanks ...

How to set up mosquito net when ceiling is very high

Posted by hansmerkl on 29/12/2009 at 04:08

I just came back from Laos and Thailand. I have one of the mosquito nets that needs to be hanged from the ceiling. It has worked fine for me in India since most rooms had an easily reachable hook over the bed. In Laos, however, the ceilings were often very high and the bed was in the middle of the room so I couldn't figure out how to set up the net. Does anybody have advice for setting up such a net or should I just get another one? I have seen some that look like little tents that have ...

This is going to be a short post as this is the third time writing it! Do moto taxis have helmets (Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos) or do you have to have your own? If you buy your own, is it easy to sell them on (I don't really want to carry a helmet round Aus, NZ, and the US!!)? Cheers Jared. ...

How/where to store money & cards?

Posted by cheeco on 15/7/2009 at 18:38

Whoops- hit enter before I wrote my question. My husband and I are planning a 6-9 month trip to Southeast Asia in the fall. I am contemplating the best way to carry around the stuff I usually keep in my wallet- money, credit and debit cards, ID, etc. I have worn a money belt before, and found it very uncomfortable and hot (and I was just flying from Canada to South Korea- not hot areas!). My first option is to just put my normal day-to-day wallet in a small pocket in my backback and lo ...

Trouble finding backpack

Posted by stevejames00 on 17/11/2009 at 19:38

Hi, I'm struggling to find a backpack which is around the 50-60L size that has a zipped main compartment so I can lock it. I live in the UK and would like one below £100. I've found plenty of good sized bags but they all have drawstring to close it. Is it essential to have zips so it can be locked? The only zipped ones I can find are about 75L which is way too big. ...

I like the IPhone's features, but all of the ones sold in Canada are locked and I want a phone that allows a change of sim cards. Is it best to wait until I arrive in Europe to purchase a phone? Is EBay a good resource for buying unlocked smart phones which are quad-band? All suggestions/advice appreci ...
