Which Travel Bag

Posted by kanda on 6/12/2013 at 22:59

I am going solo to Southeast Asia for 1.5 months in January and I am trying to figure out what bag I should take. I currently have this '65L' bag; however, I haven't used it / travelled with it before, or at all without conventional standing wheeled luggage. It seems a little small, but I'm currently not in a position where I can fill it up and test it, unfortunately. I was considering buying this 90L Kathmandu bag; http:// ...

Travel pack for weaker woman?

Posted by karibou on 10/10/2013 at 16:19

I'm an older woman looking for a travel pack for a month-long solo trip to Thailand next February. I'll occasionally take trains, buses and longboats, and will be visiting a few fairly remote areas. I don't have a ton of upper body strength and don't plan to walk long distances with my pack, but will need to hoist it for public transportation etc. I'll have some bulky items like iPad and binoculars. Is a backpack with big skate-type wheels a good option, or too heavy and uncomfortable for someon ...

Backpack for Asia

Posted by lucindalinda on 25/8/2013 at 20:55

Hello, I am going to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for 3 weeks, starting on Monday. I am on a tour for the majority of this time Which does include an overnight train, slow boat and some buses- So it wont always be secure. My friend got me a backpack for when I go away, however I just got it over the weekend and I realised that the top part does not have a zip- So it has a drawstring and then the flap that goes over and has 2 clips to close it. Do you think this will be ok or should I find a di ...

Help me pick a daypack - Northface Recon 30 vs REI Flash 22 vs Osprey Momentum 24

Posted by adaminasia on 15/8/2013 at 11:21

Hey, I need help making a decision on my daypack for a 3-month trip to Southeast Asia, anyone have any ideas? I'm deciding between a Northface Recon (which I own already, used to use as my school bag), a REI Flash 22, or Osprey Momentum 24. My main pack will be a Osprey Porter 46 - that is purchased and I'm not planning on switching that for a different bag. I'll probably pack closer to 35-40 liters into the bag, but wanted the extra space for souvenirs I pick up. Here are the things I'm thi ...

Choosing the right bag...

Posted by gibson1291 on 13/7/2013 at 11:35

Hey, I'm off to South-East Asia for 11 weeks this September and am wondering about the bag I will use to get me from A to B. - What sort of sized bag would you recommend? - Also I've read a few things saying that you shouldn't take a bag with a plastic frame on it. The bag I have at the moment has a plastic frame on the back to help keep its shape (and it also holds the actual arm straps onto the bag so it is non-detachable)...would this be suitable? - Finally, will I need a smaller bag (backp ...

Proper Backpack for SE Asia

Posted by johancp on 10/3/2013 at 06:55

I'm currently looking for a suitable backpack for my 2 month trip to SE Asia. I live in Denmark where the backpacks are extremely expensive, so i've been browsing the UK sites for a backpack i could get shipped over here. I don't think i will be doing too much hiking, so i have been looking at the Osprey Farpoint 70, which i can get for 100 pounds plus 20 for shipping. Would this be a suitable backpack or should i try to find something more expensive like the deuter aircontact?? I would rather n ...

Cell phones and sim cards

Posted by mattocmd on 2/6/2013 at 20:12

Hello everyone! I travel to SE Asia fairly often and in two weeks I'm heading back for a trip to Myanmar. I'd like to have a mobile phone this time around so that I can call guesthouses to book rooms, keep in touch with other travelers, etc... In the USA we use a different mobile phone system, so my current phone won't work in Myanmar. I read somewhere that I need an unlocked GSM mobile phone and can just buy sim card there to use for it. Do I have that right? If so, is it cheaper to buy a ...

New Rucksack - advice pls - it used to be so easy!

Posted by macleoda on 11/5/2013 at 12:27

Hi, With a 7 week trip coming up to India, Burma and beyond, I need to buy a new pack but I have a fundamental point I need advice on. (BTW - sharing cost with my dad so we can afford a decent one between us). Seems there is a new style of pack, designed for adventure travel, which cost about the same, hold about the same, but seem to weigh MUCH less. Examples: Lowe Alpine Travel Trekker II Deuter Traveller 70+10 Berghaus Jalan II 60+15 All three of these seem light, good quality and appare ...

Advice on bag size

Posted by canadian8 on 21/4/2013 at 20:52

Hello everyone, I've seen here and elsewhere that there is always some debate over optimal bag size. I can also understand the pride it seems many have in their minimalist approach. I've decided on the Osprey Farpoint (original, I know), but I'm now debating between the 55L and 70L options. Most seem to recommend bags in the 55L range. For the Farpoint, a 70L is actually a 55L main pack with an attached 15L daypack (so "55L" is 40+15). When people recommend a 50L backpack, do they me ...

Backpack stores in San Fran or Wash DC?

Posted by busylizzy on 24/2/2013 at 16:33

Hi guys - I will be heading to the US for a a week or so in May, and thought that I might take advantage of the better prices there to replace my backpack in my renewed efforts to downsize. I don't know what brand yet (if that matters) - that's what I'll start researching soon. But I'll aim for a quality brand (eg North Face, Osprey....). I'm not too familiar with the stores there... can anyone recommend any particularly good ones to check out in the San Francisco area (CBD-ish area) or Wash ...

Do I really not need a sleeping bag?

Posted by rooney on 3/1/2009 at 19:18

Hi everyone, I'm flying into Bangkok this Saturday for 4 weeks in Bangkok, Laos, Cambodia and/or Vietnam. It says in the FAQs section that I don't need to take a sleeping bag, just a sleep sheet. Is this because I won't need a sleeping bag because of the climate, or because most guesthouses will supply a cover/blanket or similar? I've looked at climate charts, and I'm not planning on going to North Vietnam where I hear it can get pretty cold this time of year. That said, I might decide ...

I will be traveling by bus and train through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Is it feasible to travel with my suitcase, or should i go with a backpack? ...
