URGENT-netbook vs iTouch

Posted by meltravelstheworld on 10/1/2010 at 10:40

Hi There, I'm heading to South East Asia on Monday for 4 months - visiting Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and likely the Philipinnes. From the other posts, it sounds like wifi is fairly accessible in most places in these countries (only big cities or small ones too?) but, what about at the guesthouses/backpacker accomodations? I am debating taking an iTouch vs a netbook. While the iTouch is handy, my biggest concern is being able to face-to-face skype with my boyfriend (pref ...

Taking a laptop travelling??

Posted by abs197 on 1/9/2008 at 16:49

Hi, I am heading out to Cambodia in Ocober, where I am going to be doing some volunteer work for 6 months (in Kep, and PP). I am then planning on traveling around SE Asia for 3-4months. I would like to take a laptop with me, the type of volunteer work I am doing, it will be helpful to be able to have internet access for some research work, and also just for the usual email, uploading photos, skype etc. I am planning on buying a small netbook type laptop so it is not heavy or cumbersome t ...

Calling Uk from Thailand, Cambodia & Laos

Hi, im travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos for 2 months from August and would like to know the cheapest and best way to call home! I do not really want to be confined to internet cafe's or anything like that so is it worth getting a roaming sim or a sim from the above countries? iPod Touch Apps without Wifi

Posted by Criggy on 27/2/2012 at 10:01

Hi, I am planning on taking my iPod Touch around SEA with me next month, but unlike an iPhone it won't have 3G or anything like that... I'll only be able to have internet access when I can pick up Wifi. Does anyone have any advice on Apps etc that work offline? I'm thinking of two in particular here - the Travelfish city guides (obviously!) and a translator (with speaker) Does anyone know if these will work offline once downloaded and installed? I'm guessing the guide probably will, but the tran ...

Which firewall?

Posted by SBE on 3/2/2012 at 06:17

I bought a new netbook in Thailand recently and have to install a firewall within the next 48 hours when my free AVG trial thingy runs out. I've waded through reviews on CNET and PC mag but am still dithering about which one to get. The editors of these sites recommend Norton but I'm wondering how heavily Norton sponsors their sites. I had Norton years ago and hated the thing. Maybe it's better nowadays though? Comodo and Zone Alarm have free firewalls which seem pretty good but they say the ...

Iphone unlocked in China

Posted by fht on 16/3/2011 at 15:41

I've had my iphone swiped and unlocked in China so I can put in a Chinese sim card and have used it perfectly fine. Since it's unlocked now can I do the same in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam? I'm not counting on my wifi b/c the unlocking process totally killed the speed of my phone and it's basically useless except to make calls. Thanks ...

I will be traveling throughout South east Asia this fall and winter. I'm looking to buy and bring an iPad with me to have Internet and keep in touch with back home. Would there be any benefit to getting the 3G option? Or is that just asking for a headache? Not sure how SIM cards and data plans work there. Thanks for the insights. ...

As someone that studied Indonesian for 5 years many (many) years ago, I wanted to brush up the conversation skills for my upcoming trip. Likewise, I learned some basic Thai when travelling to Thailand last year. Here are some useful sites that I have found that have FREE downloadable podcasts and PDF language guides. Thanks to info on Travelfish, I have converted some of these PDF guides to text format to load onto my iPod so I can follow the language lessons on my iPod on those long bu ...

Asia SIM

Posted by Peeter on 20/3/2011 at 08:12

Is there such a thing as a SIM card that works in multiple Asian countries (Malaysia, Cambodia, Hong Kong) or do I need a local SIM for each country to avoid roaming charges? If I need multiple SIMs, what would be a good prepaid SIM for these countries. Can you even get SIMs out of iPhones and will it mess up all the apps if I change the SIM? I bought it outright so I don't think it is locked to a carrier. ...

Sending Pictures Home

Posted by sublime_net on 9/9/2008 at 08:44

I'm planning a three month trip through southeast asia, and will be taking a ton of pictures along the way. I have a small portable hard drive to store most of the pictures on, but would like to send copies home as well in case something happens to the drive along the way. The best idea I've come up with so far is to buy a hand full of micro sd cards, which have become very inexpensive lately, and mail them home as well as off load them onto my hard drive when they fill up. I was wondering if an ...
