Insane iPhone bills

Posted by somtam2000 on 3/8/2009 at 11:56

If you're travelling with an iPhone and plan to use it while travelling in Asia, be very very wary of the roaming charges you may be picking up along the way. Guests staying with us for two weeks recently returned home to a telephone bill in excess of A$4,100 -- for a phone that had not had a single call made on it. The culprit is "data roaming" and what you need to do is switch that off and only use the data functions (web surfing, emails etc) via WiFi (which, in most cases will cost you ...

Posted by Theodora on 1/7/2010 at 17:21

Hi all, My Macbook just died and I want to pick up a cheap netbook as a substitute. We are travelling longterm, currently in BKK. Where am I likely to get the best deal? Bangkok, Malaysia or Singapore? Seen decent brands for 9990 baht + 7% VAT on an initial sweep of Pantip Plaza, but will be in KL soon. ...

Newsjunkies - Getting everything Good to Go (iPad/iPhone)

Posted by Road_Warrior on 23/5/2010 at 21:42

I travel a lot and I like to have all of my reading material available to me wherever I go. I picked up an iPad a month ago and think it's a great way to consolidate news and other deliverables... but the iPhone works just as well (albeit with a smaller screen). For Magazine subscriptions, I use Zinio. I have about 20+ subscriptions that sync over the air directly to my device. It's such a pleasure not to have to use iTunes to do this! After some teething troubles - and frequent crashing - the ...

An idiot's guide to getting online with a cellphone in Thailand

Posted by packtoofull on 14/7/2008 at 17:57

Travelhappy has a great piece about just how easy it can be to get online with a cellphone in Thailand without needing to troll down to the local games centre and bully a ten-year old off a games-terminal. Grab a phone, local sim, make a couple of calls and you're set -- or so he says anyway. Read the full up and down, left and right on getting online with a mobile phone in Thailand. ...

Electricity Converters?

Posted by urbal on 27/2/2008 at 01:49

What type of electricity/plug converters do I need in Thailand coming from the USA? I have seen a variety of products on Amazon and elsewhere and it looks like I will need a voltage converter from 220v (thai) to 220v (usa) and also a plug adapter. Can anyone recommend a good product and confirm that I will need both the converter and adapter....? If it matters, I'll be charging Digital Cameras, a Nintendo DS, and that's about it. Thanks in advance! ...

AA Lithium Batteries in Thailand? Do they exist?

Posted by mille716 on 1/7/2008 at 19:42

I'm in Koh Tao right now and the batteries for my digital camara have died about three days ago. So far I've bought three different packs of batteries, none of which can power my camara long enough to take a picture. I've only bought lithium batteries for it in the States since I thought they would just last longer, not because I knew they were required. The only lithium batteries I've come across so far are the short fat ones for some digital camaras. Am I going to have to wait till I get b ...

Electricity converter/iPod question

Posted by ellenruth on 29/11/2009 at 00:14

Is anyone an expert on voltage issues? I want to be able to charge my iPod using a plug while in SE Asia. I have a device my friend passed along to me that says SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY. The input is 100-240V-.2A 50-60Hz. The output is +5V=1.0A MAX. My iPod says it's rated 5-30V-1A Max so it sounds to me like I could get an adaptor for the local plugs and use my SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY and it wouldn't fry my iPod. I don't want to buy/carry a heavy converter if I don't need to so I'd appreciate anyo ...

Memory card stress

Posted by somtam2000 on 1/9/2008 at 18:43

One of the great things about the web, is it brings together those who have the info and those that need it. So here's a link to a blog entry by someone who really, absolutely, should definitely be already travelling rather than, well, comparing the read and write speeds of digital camera memory cards. So if you're in the market for good, fast flash cards for your camera, the following is well worth a look. Comparing camera memory card speeds ...

One Netbook for 3 People? What Model?

Posted by ecurry33 on 22/9/2009 at 03:12

I have only started to research netbooks and would appreciate a jump start in figuring out what I need. We are 3 people [me, hubby, 7 yr old daughter] traveling for 2 weeks and will all be doing alot of digital photography-2 of us with high resolution cameras. We need a netbook that downloads our images quickly since all 3 of us will need to download nightly onto 1 machine and then probably do some on-screen editing to preserve storage space. I know I need to estimate how much storage spac ...

Hi everyone Im going travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos as part of a RTW in September. I know the laptop question gets asked so many times but i cant seem to see what i want to know. I have an old laptop which i wouldnt be distraught if it got lost/damaged whilst i was travelling. Solar power chargers

Posted by SBE on 9/7/2009 at 19:38

I think I've decided where I'm going snorkelling next trip but there's no electricity on the island and the place I want to stay doesn't have a generator...oil lamps in the huts and solar power lights for the restaurant. Charging camera/torch batteries is going to be a wee bit of a problem after a few days and I'd quite like to spend a few weeks there. As paradise islands of the beaten trail can be a wee bit dull in the evenings, I was thinking of investing in a netbook+DVD or a small la ...

Enough WiFi bandwidth for mass flickr uploading?

Posted by staverton on 3/8/2009 at 23:04

Hi all, I'll be travelling to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand from mid September for four weeks and am trying work out my best option for backing up photos on the move. I'm a keen amateur photographer and have been known to take over 1,000 pics in a day whilst travelling (this is the very extreme of course, thanks to all the pretty shrines and temples in Kyoto last year). Realistically I expect to take anywhere between 0 and 300 pics a day. My main camera is 10MPx and so even the JP ...
