Hanoi, Halong Bay & Tet New Year

Posted by basho on 6/11/2009 at 19:52

An article about travelling in Vietnam during this time and what happened. Outside Context - the travel writing is back! Quote: I remember thinking that seen from a distance through the eyes of, say, an observer from another planet, what was happening here would look like some sort of strange and ancient ritual dance. The Taxi driver and we moved around each other twisting and swaying, we were all pointing at maps and towards distant objects. We were haggling with big arm gestures and s ...

Cambodia's best beaches/islands?

Posted by Thewatersedge on 5/11/2009 at 15:14

Hi We're travelling to Cambodia over New Year and into January. We have about 8 days to hang out on a beach. I've been reading about Shihanoukbille's beaches and islands but would love to know which islands/beaches and accommodation people recommend? I don't want to be with too many tourists or in a resort - quiet, pretty, good food and good accommodation - and happy to move between beaches to get a mix. Any suggestions? Thanks very much Jo ...

Hi from the hotel lobby looking over the bay of pattaya a bit of information if you are planning to go to Pattaya from the airport. Go to level 1 far right hand side of the airport (far right if you are standing outside looking at the airport0 and there you have national buses every 2 hrs starting at 07h00,145 baht and if not, lots of private pre-booked busses that have spare seats so depending on availability you can get one for 200 baht with the advantage that they drop you off directly at you ...

Laos as i go...

Posted by christay2009 on 1/10/2009 at 16:42

The border crossing between China and Laos was fairly easy. There is a direct bus [more than one] from Kunming to Mengla. It cost me Y204 for the overnight sleeper although i think a day time option exists also. Once in Mengla there are various options and it seems they depend mostly on luck! We were messed around for awhile [i was even with a mandarin speaker]. At first there was only a direct Luang Nam tha bus at 10:40 [it was 7:20am] but then we were told by some...i can only describe him ...

Leaving tonight - Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia

Posted by angfonz on 21/8/2009 at 10:02

Its going to be fun - and hopefully not too rainy. I'll make a long post about it once I'm home - but it might be of use noting that I will be tracking the entire trip via GPS. I'll log gp coords for many of the things to do and see that we encounter. I'll also be staying in many of the guesthouses recommended here on TF, so I'll log geoposition coordinates for those and any others I stumble past. Hopefully that information will be useful to Somtam - A lot more people are using GPS thes ...

Wonderful Stay at Perhentian Island Tunabay Resort

Posted by shazu on 10/9/2008 at 01:07

Hi, my name is Lou. For island, sun and sea lovers, especially if you are visiting Malaysia, may i personally recommend you to a great resort in Pulau Perhentian. I stayed 5days 4nights in this resort called "Perhentian Tunabay Island Resort" The resort is rated as the #1 Resort in Perhentian Islands. The rooms are simply but nicely furnished, with comfortable beds, aircon and fans and hot water. I went round to a few hotels in the island and I honestly think this resort is the cleanest. T ...
