Vietnam forum

If you're a first time visitor to Vietnam, we'll point you to the Ha Long Bay thread for points to keep in mind when selecting the right Ha Long Bay tour for you. If you've questions about a potential itinerary, do take a look at the itinerary section of the site as well. We'll also apologise in advance for the persistent spamming by Vietnam-based travel agents -- we do try to delete them as quickly as they come in. Sorry!

WARNING: re Ha Long Bay cruise touts Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/12/2009 at 13:32

We're having ongoing issues banning accounts that belong to Vietnamese travel agents that are spamming the forum pretending to be customers either asking for advice or supposedly giving advice regarding boat tours on Ha Long Bay. The boats most commonly touted are: Columbus Bhaya Phoenix I would treat any comments or advice given concerning any of the above operators with EXTREME CAUTION -- especially if it is from a relatively new site member. As far as I am concerned, if a business ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have to ...

Bach Ma National Park

Posted by rossilfossil on 1/12/2016 at 19:02

Hello, I am heading to Bach Ma National Park for two nights at the end of December. I've read Caroline's article which was great, but was wondering if I should be booking in accommodation before arrival or if it is ok to do this at the information centre. I'm wondering just how busy it will be at this time of the year. Any other tips for Bach Ma are most welcome. Thank you! ...

Camera Repair in Vietnam

Posted by SteffenM on 1/12/2016 at 06:04

Hi there, I'm traveling with my Nikon D90 atm and it got a bit wet yesterday in the rain. Can't have been much as it was under my raincoat but there were tiny drops of water on the body/lens that must have gone into the device. It was in no way proper 'rained on' though. Anyway, it's damaged now but hopefully can be saved. Question is: I'm in Hoi An where there's no chance of repair. Does anyone know of a decent (no rip offs) repair place in Da Nang (1h away) or alternatively Dalat which ...

Motor bike Transfer Hoi An to Hue

Posted by Bridgequeen on 15/11/2016 at 04:59

Hi I want to travel between Hoi An and Hue by motorbike (pillion) and wondered if anyone can recommend a good company. Le Family Riders are highly recommended but as they are based in Hue they will not take my suitcase by car but will strap it on the bike if I engage their services and I am concerned this will be a bit uncomfortable (never mind health and safety). I have to go Hoi An to Hue because of pre booked flights. Also, any advice for suitable attire for the journey for end of Fe ...

Vietnam visa on arrival: true or not?

Posted by JeremyNicholl on 22/11/2016 at 06:20

I'm in Thailand at the moment and plan to go to Vietnam next week. Everything I've read says the easiest way to get a visa is through a Vietnamese travel agency who will arrange a VOA for collection when you arrive at a Vietnamese international airport. Then today I read this: < http://www.vietnamembassy-thailand.org/en/nr070521170031/nr150604213446/ns151110183200>. That's a pretty strict announcement from the Viet consulate that such visas are not legal, and that people should avoid deal ...

Vietnam or Thailand beach

Posted by Charlotte004 on 7/11/2016 at 19:56

my friend and I are travelling Vietnam North to South, currently heading to HCMC. We head back on Nov. 18 via Bangkok airport. For our first trip to Bangkok/Vietnam, we're doing all the classic stops (Hanoi, Sapa, HCMC, Mekong...) but we'd like to end our trip on a sunny beach somewhere. I've noticed Vietnam doesn't guarantee sun in November. What beach in Thailand or Vietnam would you recommend for a couple of days' visit? ...

HCMC to Phnom Penh, via bus, with an evisa, and proof on onward travel - advice needed!

Posted by Brightmaw on 3/11/2016 at 17:43

Hello everyone, Please take the time to read this post. I have looked over this forum for the answer but honestly can't see a comprehensive, or recent response. My girlfriend and I will be travelling from HCMC to Phnom Penh in late December, via the Moc Bai Bavet Border Crossing. I would be really grateful for any advice regarding getting through the border with an evisa. I understand many bus companies insist on a $5 processing fee to administer visas on arrival. However, as we do not need t ...

Luggage storage at HCMC hotel?

Posted by Danila on 25/10/2016 at 01:43

If you're staying in Saigon and go out for a 3d/2n to Mekong Delta, would you ask the hotel in Saigon to store it, and check out/check back in after your tour, or would you keep and pay for the hotel in Saigon? (so you're double-paying, but places are inexpensive!) Which is the best option for security? Thanks! ...

Da Nang- Hoian- Hue, should I travel with a tour?

Posted by SarahSw on 17/10/2016 at 00:06

Hello there! I found many visitors choosing those places and giving good reviews about this tour. I also found some said that it is not too difficult for travelling by yourself. Is this okay for a woman to travel alone ? I have never been in Vietnam and one more question is that what time should I visit to avoid crowded public space ? Thanks in advance. ...

Where to go during Tet

Posted by Bridgequeen on 4/9/2015 at 14:18

I have stupidly booked a (non changeable) ticket into KL and out of Bangkok from 28 Jan to 18 Feb which coincides nicely with Tet. The plan had been to do Hanoi, Nha TRang, Hoi An and Phuo Quoc but now I am wondering if that is such a good idea. Any advice would be welcome - I don't have to go to Vietnam, happy wandering around SE Asia and have done Cambodia, Lao and Malaysia trips - in fact I arrived in Kuching this year at the beginning of New year and everything was dead and closed - exce ...

Vietnam's tourist return rates

Posted by somtam2000 on 8/10/2010 at 14:46

The Economist has a very interesting story on Vietnam's tourism mob, discussing how some aspects of the promotion of Vietnam as a destination haven't been handled perhaps as well as they should be. You can read the full story here The quote that really stood out for me though was this one: "Vietnam has a return rate of just 5% compared to Thailand’s whopping 50%." Wow. Vietnam tends to elicit strong reactions from people -- they either love it to bits, or loathe it with a passio ...
