South Vietnam and Laos

Posted by stevenjmartin on 27/3/2016 at 07:43

Hi all, We have two weeks to spend in southern and middle Vietnam in July. I was wondering if anyone had any particular beach recommendations. We'd also consider going into Cambodia to beaches if there were recommended over those in Vietnam. We were reading that up to and including Hoi An will be good at this time of year - how bad will the weather be further north in Vietnam? Finally, there don't seem to be any low-cost flights to Luang Prabang from Saigon but we'd love to have a taste of ...

Sapa Itinerary Advice for Non-Trekkers

Posted by tigershoot on 1/3/2016 at 17:02

Firstly, I can see that being a non-trekker does not seem to fit with a trip to Sapa . I'll explain. My wife of 49 ( I'm 50) has bad knee trouble and as such trekking for hours is not really an option. Other than that we are both fit. She could probably manage a two hour walk. After seeing Halong Bay and then coming back to Hanoi , the plan is to catch the 2200 train to Sapa ( Lao Cai ). This would get us into Sapa at I guess about 7am on the Thursday What we plan on doing ...

Book now or in Vietnam

Posted by Annielay on 7/3/2016 at 22:44

We will be in Vietnam in June for about 3 weeks. Can anyone advise me whether it is better to book Ha Long Bay tours from home or better value when we get to Hanoi for a trip 3 days later? Is it leaving it too late to book for travel in the next few days? We also want to book Sapa tours and other flights to Da Nang etc but I am a bit confused as to whether I should have it all organised from home or wait until we get there for the extra choices and probably better value. Thanks. ...

How to buy a motorbike in Hue, Vietnam, and other motorbike tips.

After doing this, I thought I can maybe write a few helpful notes to those interested in doing the same. So here's what I did. Buying: I bought my bike through Kim Thien. Kim is a honest and professional mechanic with enough English to get around tourists. (English + Honest in Vietnam = Gold) I went to his shop in 24 Nguyen Sinh Cung Street in Hue (his phone number is 0906424641) and asked him to help me buy a Honda Win. You can also find his business card in Hue Backpackers hostel. Hon ...

Taxi or scooter for 6 months in HCMC

Posted by dooky on 29/2/2016 at 08:34

Hi all, I will be staying in Ho Chi Minh City for 6 months with 2 classmates. We have app. 7-8 km from the apartment to where we will work, but is unsure if we should make some sort of taxi arrangement or if we should rent a scooter and go on our own. The implications of being involved in an accident looks a bit severe with high prison sentences. Does anyone know what a trip by taxi from district 2 to district 9 (8 km) will cost? Perhaps some sort of permanent arrangement if possible. Than ...

Vietnam in June

Posted by tagotra on 20/2/2016 at 03:37

Hello fellow travellers! My wife and I (in late 20s - from India) want to visit Vietnam in first week of June for 10-12 days. Ideally, we would like to cover Sapa, Hanoi, Halong Bay Cruise, Hoi An and Saigon (HCMC), but I read up at several places that June is the high domestic crowd season, and almost all places will be very hot. May I have your valuable feedback on what places in North, Central and South are best suited for a vacation in first week of June that't not unbearably hot and not ...

Nam Du homestay

Posted by Potbellypirate on 25/2/2016 at 16:37

Hello fellow travellers! My husband and I are in the early stages of planning a trip to vietnam and love the idea of visiting somewhere a little less touristy than the major sites. I saw in the recent newsletter the article on nam du, and I think this place looks fantastic. Definitley suits our style of travel - fresh seafood, ocean breeze, and no major hotel behemoths in sight. Seeing as my husband and I don't speak a scrap of vietnamese does anyone know if any of the guesthouses or homestay ...
