money in SEA

Posted by akirafro on 15/11/2010 at 14:19

Me and a friend are heading over to South East Asia in a couple of weeks, including Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Malaysia. We've been to Thailand once before and simply used our bank cards to withdraw money but we didn't realise that we'd get stuck with a hefty commission from the banks. What would be the best options in the countries above when it comes to taking money?? Thanks, Akira ...

Or it's best for someone who is helpful enough to name out some rate that the Vietnam items, I mean the local price like, a bowl of Pho, a packet of cigg, a bottle of many as possible to let us tourist have a rough guide how much to pay if we visit Vietnam (Hanoi) ...

We have just arrived in Hanoi today for 3 weeks in Vietnam and will be ending up on Phu Quoc hopefully. We then plan on hitting the easterns islands for 2 weeks, Ko Chang, Ko Maak & Ko Kut to finish our trip. What is the quickest way of getting from Phu Quoc to Ko Chang? I seen this previous thread on this subject, but this was done over land through Cambodia This looks like it would take 2 - 3 days to do and as we will have already done quite a l ...

Hello! First of all, thanks to all the informative posts on this forum. It has been very helpful with planning our honeymoon trip. My wife and I, both 30, are doing a 3 week trip in Vietnam. We've been to SEA twice before, and heard great things about Vietnam. Any suggestions to our itinerary? We'll be there Nov 22-Dec9. N21 - Arrive at SGN @ 19h25. Will try to get to Hanoi the same night. N22-23 - Hanoi x 3days, 3 nights N24-25 - Halong Bay x2 days, 1 night (probably Columbus tours) N26 - Ge ...

Nha Trang Hotel

Posted by Drifter1dc on 10/11/2010 at 20:15

I recently stayed at a small wonderful hotel in Nha Trang just north of the main backpacker area. It has all the amenities at a very reasonable price. A/C, cable, clean, and right on the beach...yes right on the beach for $12usd per night. Run by a Canadian and his Viet Kieu wife this is an off the beaten path gem of a hotel. I've reviewed it on other sites but can't seem to find a place to do that here. I've travelled to Viet Nam numerous times and found this place to be the best value and just ...

travelling around Dalat

Posted by issac888 on 9/11/2010 at 17:59

I will be travelling alone to Dalat soon. However I had not sort out what is the best way to travel around Dalat. Ideally I would prefer walking around but it seems that some of the attraction are quite far apart and out of town. I'm now considering renting a bicycle and cycle around. Will this be a good options and advisable? I'm more concern about the safety of cycling alone out of town to the waterfalls and leaving the bicycle unattended while i'm visiting the attactions. Another options I' ...

Problems with Vietnam Airlines

2 Minsk motorbikes for sale in Saigon

Posted by szaller on 21/5/2010 at 11:49

We are selling our Minsk motorbikes for $350 each. We've been riding them in Vietnam for 7 weeks and have reached some amazing places (forget about the Top Gear ride, they've missed the best bits). Motorbike are the best way to travel in Vietnam! These Minsks have been overhauled and tested on a 130 km trip. Both work better then when we bought them so we are selling them with confidence that you will have a great time riding them and they will not let you down. The Minsks come with the legal p ...

November bus travel with flooding

Posted by chelsea on 8/11/2010 at 16:31

I'm currently in Saigon and was hoping to travel to Hanoi on an open bus ticket beginning this week, stopping in Dalat, Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Hoi An and Hue. The travel agent said "the water is going down" but then said she was unsure whether the bus would be able to get past Nha Trang. What are your thoughts, folks on the ground? Should I just fly? I'm also considering settling down in Hanoi for a bit, so I could travel in the centre in the new year. I do feel for the folks who rely ...

Getting to Da Lat from Hanoi

Posted by sampowers07 on 9/11/2010 at 08:19

I will be in Hanoi, and my next destination is Da Lat. I read that I can get a flight for about $100. I'm just trying to make it there as cheap as I can, but also have limited time in the country. I'm not picky about sleeping situations on trains/bus or anything like that. But if those are going to take way too much of my time I'd rather fly. I can't seem to find anything on taking a train to the destination. Anyone have any suggestions? ...

How long to stay in Sapa and other Vietnam/Laos questions

Posted by linolanayseda on 4/11/2010 at 09:10

Hi everyone! My husband and I are going to Vietnam and Laos for the first time this coming February/early March for 19 days. We're flying into Hanoi , then plan to go to NW Vietnam, across the Tay Trang border crossing, then down the Nam Ou to Luang Prabang. I've been trying to draw up an itinerary, but I have one floating day, and I'm wondering where to allot it. The options are: Hanoi, Sapa , or another day on the river/in river villages. Here's what I'm tentatively planning, in order: ...

Bus or Rail from Nanning to Hanoi?

Posted by mundovagabunda on 1/11/2010 at 18:02

Hi there, Is it better to take the train or bus from Nanning (china) to Hanoi? Does anyone know the cost of the train? I think it is about $120USD, but trying to double check this. How does the border crossing work with the train vs the bus and how long does it normally take? I've also read that you switch buses once in Vietnam and if you take the train, the customs stop lasts about 4 hours. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. This is our first time in Asia. Thank you!! ...

Siem Reap to Chau Doc in 1 day?

Posted by jonyd1 on 2/11/2010 at 07:47

Hi everyone - I have been looking into how to get to Chau Doc from Siem Reap (looks like I am just going to explore the Mekong area on my own instead of a tour out of Saigon - seem like a better idea?). From what I have found it looks like the best bet from SR to PP is a bus with either the Mekong Express, or Mai Linh (spelling?). It looked like those would arrive in PP sometime afternoon. After that it looked like the way to go would be to get a boat from PP to Chau Doc with Hang Chau boat ...

All sound wonderful, however we are a bit concerned about Sapa and Ha Long bay being too touristy/crowded. Appreciate any opinions on the best plan. ...
