Anyone stayed in/heard of the Golden Land Hotel in Hanoi

Posted by Gabrielah on 27/2/2010 at 09:36

I found out about it via trip advisor, and it has nearly perfect reviews. I haven't read about it anywhere else though, so I'm a bit wary. A friend recommended the Camellia hotel Hanoi, but I can afford something a bit nicer. (Golden Land Hotel is in the same area as Camellia hotel Hanoi.) If anyone knows anything about this spot, let me know! Thanks! ...

Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in a month

Posted by kye1 on 1/3/2010 at 10:04

Hi all, Im heading over to Vietnam, cambodia and Loas for a month in July and was going to fly in and out of Ho Chi Min. Then i was going to head up through cambodia and laos to Hanio and back down the coast of Vietnam. Just wondering what ppl thought were the best things to see through here and if i was wasting my time and should fly to major cities and look around the area instead of traveling on bus, scooter, boat (what ever) right through. Any tips would be muchly appreciated. I was also ...

Ripped off on public buses in Hanoi

Posted by rakkie on 6/2/2010 at 08:16

I recently visited Hanoi for the first time and decided to catch the public bus (#17) from the airport to save money. They charged me 50000 dong for me ticket which seemed expensive but they refused to give me any change even though I tried to argue (I later found out this was 10 times the normal price). I've never had problems with bus drivers in any other countries, so is there a good strategy to avoid this in Hanoi? ...

flying solo in Vietnam and Cambodia

Posted by FlashWanderer on 16/2/2010 at 16:14

Hi fellow TBs, I'm new to the site and even though I've gone over many postings covering similar we go again. The initial plan was to book with a tour group for both Vietnam and Cambodia, but after 3+ weeks of full-on-pre-plan-stress over 'ideal' itineraries, budgets, and the pursuit of CLEAN accommodations, I find myself without a tour booking and somehow feeling some semblance of calm about flying solo. How'd that happen? So in the interest of continuing the state of ...

Trekking/cycling tour in central/north Vietnam - recommendations?

Posted by mamaamis on 1/3/2010 at 09:33

I'll be traveling in Vietnam for 12 days in March, and I would like to do a combo motorcycling and trekking tour of the central and/or northern highlands. I'd like to travel for 4-5 days, working my way south to the coast, where I'll hang out somewhere between Danang to Nha Trang. I'm interested in cultural experiences and good scenery, basic clean budget accommodations and good local food, and I'd like to do some hiking in between stretches of motorbiking. I'm a fairly seasoned traveler ...

Genuines and Fakes (Travel Agencies, Tours etc)

Posted by Shahmatt on 24/12/2009 at 09:42

Hi all. In my research on Vietnam travel I've found far too many fake agencies that use the name of established players to get ahead. This has been very irritating and extremely worrying, and I hate worrying when on holiday. I want to confirm the correct websites for the genuine agencies. I would appreciate it if users here could post up what they believe is the correct website and what the source of their information is if any (for example: Lonely Planet, edition XXX, page XX). Since pos ...

Fly or not from HCMC?

Posted by markacino on 24/2/2010 at 11:35

Hey all, am going to be in HCMC for a few nights before heading up north. I was planning on flying straight to Danang. Then spend a couple of weeks around danang/hoi an/hue. Then flying on up too Hanoi. I would be there mid May, so I am assuming weather would be nice for sightseeing/beaches etc. The other option is taking the train or open bus up to mid vietnam and seeing some sights on the way. This option would obviously limit my time in Danang/HoiAn/Hue due to the longer trip. I ...

What to do / where to stay for 1 week in northern Vietnam in September

Posted by JesseJames12 on 23/2/2010 at 22:37

I plan to spend the second week of September in north / north central Vietnam flying in and out of Hanoi. I would like to hit 2 or 3 destinations, but cant decide where to go. The trip is the second half of my honeymoon, the first half will be spent on the beach in indonesia. The idea is to get out of the city for some adventure and culture, but still find some nice places to crash at night (aka. to keep the fiance happy and be romantic). Any suggestions of where to go and where to ...

Vietnam Visa - photo

Posted by FlashWanderer on 22/2/2010 at 14:58

Hi fellow travellers, I just received my visa a couple of days ago, and was pleasantly surprised because apparently I was told the Embassy in Canada was on holiday for the week. In anycase, the local travel agent (here in Canada) that helped me arrange my visa, expressed concern over my photo on the visa being black and white. Even though I submitted a colour one, it came back b/w. She's a specialist in Vietnam travel so I assume she knows what she's talking about when she says the phot ...

Nha Trang Island day-trips - As bad as they sound?

Posted by WonderingTsar on 22/2/2010 at 08:57

Does anyone have good experiences of day trips to the islands around Nha Trang? I'm here (Nha Trang) and have collected a pile of (near-identical) itineries (see below) from various travel desks. Are these as bad as they sound? Has anyone been on this and loved it, or found a less tacky version. 0830 Pick up from your hotel 0915 The exciting boat trip starts 1000-11h30 AT MUN ISLAND Snorkelling on the extraordinary coral reefs which are covered with the multicoloured fishes 11h4 ...

Vietnam & Laos in 15 days?

Posted by lolamcg on 23/2/2010 at 03:17

Hello All, A friend and I are flying into Hanoi on March 5th and out of Ho Chi Minh on March 20th. Rather than spend so much time traveling down the coast, we thought it might be worth the flight cost to hit up Laos instead. Do you think this itinerary will work for us? I understand that less is more, but when you have full time jobs, two weeks a year is all you get and we want to make the most of it. Sadly, another trip back to Asia anytime soon is unlikely, and I've already seen and lov ...

Flights to Vietnam

Posted by John67 on 15/2/2010 at 20:29

Just a quickie, I'm looking to go to Vietnam in March for 3-4 weeks travelling from Hanoi down to Saigon. Is it easier/cheaper to fly in and out of Bangkok with internal flights to Hanoi at the start and at the end from HCMC to BKK or get international flights in and out of the two Vietnamese cities ? Thanks John ...

about Sinh cafe tours and tours in Sapa

Posted by laus on 19/2/2010 at 02:11

Hi!! I've read a lot about the bad and good experiences with the tours in Vietnam and I can conclude that Sinh Cafe is one of the better choices. Is that true???, do you know the address of their office in Hanoi and HCMC?? I really want to do some tours: Halong Bay, The Perfume Pagoda and Mekong Delta... I think I can get a better price if I book the tours in their office, isn't it???... is this their website: I also want to do a tour in Sapa and I've ...

1 Week in September: Vietnam or Cambodia?

Posted by JesseJames12 on 6/2/2010 at 03:07

We are planning to spend the second half of my honeymoon (1 week) in either Vietnam or Cambodia in the middle of September 2010. We will be in Bali for the first half of the trip so we are not looking to spend time at the beach, but rather soak up the culture, scenery and food. If we go to Vietnam we are thinking about traveling around the North and ending up in Hanoi. I have not looked into Cambodia much, so i dont know were we would go if we decided on spending the week there. In particu ...

Train/Bus Travel Planning

Posted by smudge86 on 19/2/2010 at 04:42

Was just interested how far in advance people would recommend planning train or bus journeys in Vietnam (or any other country in Indochina)? and how clued up they are on the stations and routes before they touch down in the country? Obviously it helps to have good knowledge of the routes and stations regarding the destinations you wish to visit, but realistically how easy is it to get from A to B? I realise this is quite a general question because it depends on when and where, but any feed ...

Vietnam Visa but no particular dates

Hi! Sorry for posting another visa related question.. I know the visa for Vietnam is a tricky one as you need to get one in advance and not in arrival. I want to arrange the papers and everything but I don't have a ticket, or anything that proves when I'll be going in or out yet. We are planning to do the whole Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam etc trip but only have a ticket for Thailand so far and no fixed dates or papers for the rest? Any advice? Thanks in advance! z ...
