We arrive at bkk on a monday afternoon and fly out to Hanoi that Wednesday at 2pm. Have read here that its easiest to get a voa for Vietnam whilst in Asia. Our stay in Vietnam will be about 30 days long. Are we cutting it too fine to get a voa in bkk in less than 2 days? Also I have read that if we get a voa in the uk, b4 we fly out, (mid sept), the 30 days starts from day of issue. My guess to the easiest would be to apply for a 3 month voa now, here in the UK. What company did you use? ...

Posted by Oakjand on 28/8/2015 at 23:08

I have been communicating with a "reputable" travel agency/tour company in Hanoi. I asked about going to Halong Bay and Cat Ba and they wrote the following, which seems strange: "Cat Ba island is unrecommended because it's almost for local people only." Why would they tell us this? Should I drop this idea? ...

What to skip in Vietnam? Travelling 2 weeks in August

Posted by seregua on 2/6/2015 at 07:13

Hi all! First post for me on Travelfish though I have been digging the site for info for all of our recent travels in South East Asia (Thailand twice\ Cambodia \ Malesia \ Indonesia). I am hoping to find some suggestions on how to arrange two weeks in Vietnam + one week in Laos this August. Contrary to most I need suggestions on what to skip! There is just too much to see and our time is limited. First of all: should we limit ourselves to Vietnam? Ideally I have the following plan, any suggestio ...

Hi! A friend and I are going to Vietnam in mid-October. We will be there for a full 2 weeks. So far we only have our flights booked, so our itinerary is totally flexible. We are flying into Hanoi and flying back from Ho Chi Minh City . We are thinking 3 full days in Hanoi and 3 full days in Ho Chi Minh City. Does that sound about right? We fell in love with Asia when we visited Thailand and Cambodia. We especially enjoy visiting areas that haven't been discovered by a lot of tourists. We re ...

The best time to travel Sapa is from March to May andfrom September to November. At these times, the weather is relatively stable with sunny days and coolnights. The first period is the summer time. At this time of the year, theethnic minorities grow rice on terraced fields. There are many beautifulflowers, which will blossom in this period, so you will see the wonderfulscenes. Halong Bay - should we?

Posted by patrirp on 5/8/2015 at 01:54

We are currently in Phong Nha, and our plan was moving north to Halong Bay for few days, but we've read in the news about the floodings in the north, and also met some travellers whose trips to Halong Bay have been cancelled few days ago, due to the bad conditions of the area. We've asked in our homestay but they don't really know what the situation is over there, and we can't really find any reliable information in the net.. Some travellers advice to spend few days before heading to that part, ...

North Vietnam with a baby (Sapa and Ha Giang)

Posted by Blt_travel on 22/7/2015 at 16:02

Hi, We are a couple with a baby (one year and a half). I have to thank Travelfish because this web has been really helpful for us to plan our trip to Vietnam. However, we still have some doubts about our trip, especially about Sapa . Taking into account that we travel with a baby, we are only considering activities with private guide and private car (in case it is needed). This might be more expensive but we need to go at our own pace. We want to be in Sapa for 5 days. We arrive in Satur ...

Currency in Vietnam

Hi Folks, I am heading to Vietnam in August and are a bit unsure how to use money whilst over there. I was thinking of using some sort of prepaid card as conversion rates and fees were more favourable than own bank card but have heard some horror stories about usage at ATM's for example. Does anyone have experience of using travellers cheques in Vietnam? Any help would be much appreciated I will be travelling from the UK. Cheers Ross ...

Than Uyen near Sapa

Is there anyone who has been to this place? It is in between Tuan Giao and Sapa. It's not on the main tourist highway, but I'm want to try it as an alternative. I've been googling endlessly, but only find descriptions of tourist agents in the style of 'Day X we will stay in a guesthouse in Than Uyen...." Any recommendation or story about Than Uyen is welcome, also what kind of minorities one can see there? Also, how's the road between Tuan Giao and Than Uyen? Many thanks, Dann ...

Mosquito Nets - useful?

Posted by krestniy on 5/8/2011 at 14:22

Do I really need to carry a mosquito net? We'll be in Vietnam and Laos for 40 days total, including some tours. It seems that most nets come either with a hook that attaches in the center or with strings at each corner. I am wondering about how useful they will be. If a room has a place to tie the hook - wouldn't it have a mosquito net? And if it doesn't - where would the net be placed? Thanks! ...

Getting to the Vinh Moc Tunnels

Posted by Laki on 21/5/2010 at 10:24

I am presently in Ho Chi Minh City and trying to plan out the rest of my time in Vietnam. Is there a way to get to Vinh Moc from Hue or Dong Ha without an organized tour of the DMZ? Are local buses an option, and if so, where, when and how do I get them? Failing that, how much ought a driver cost me? I'm from the states, so never driven a motorbike before, so I'm not sure if I want to chance that. I've been puzzled over the relative lack of solid information on alternate ways to exp ...
