Sapa: Trekking and homestay or climb mt Fansipan? (or both?)

Posted by mmoody on 7/12/2013 at 16:15

I am trying to plan out my trip to SE Asia in April. I will be arriving into Hanoi and have a couple days to go up to Sapa . I am fairly fit (personal trainer) so a friend mentioned a hike to Mt Fansipan as a highlight of her trip years ago. It sounds interesting to me, but it seems like from what I can gather that you don't see much of the hill tribes when doing this hike. Is it possible to do some trekking to villages one day and then the hike to Fansipan the next? (I know it's stren ...

Do some US dollar notes get rejected in Vietnam?

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 11/1/2014 at 08:17

I've got to bring to Vietnam US$ notes to pay hotel bills agreed in dollars. I've heard that in some Asian countries dollar notes can get rejected if they're not very new & clean or if they're in certain unpopular denominations. What's Vietnam like concerning this? Will $50 notes be accepted or should I stick to $10 bills? ...

Can Tho - boat trip to floating market (warning/advice)

Posted by fox80 on 29/5/2011 at 19:57

Hello, I just wanted to share my recent experience in case anyone visits Can Tho and is interested in doing the early morning boat trip to the floating markets. After we’ve arrived late in the afternoon to Can Tho city, we checked into one of the hotels near the riverside. We wanted to book the boat tour to the morning markets, but we wanted to do it without the middle man. After we went down to the reception, there was this man hanging around in the lobby, who I assume was somehow affilia ...

Hanoi's Ho Chi Minh Trail Museum: what\'s it like?

What's on offer at the Ho Chi Minh Trail Museum, south-east of Hanoi? My guidebooks sound like they haven't actually visited it themselves. I'm keen to hear from people who have. (I know what the Ho Chi Minh Trail was - please tell me about the museum.) ...

Confused about the weather

Posted by marianaamc on 6/1/2014 at 12:06

I keep on researching the weather in Northern Vietnam in July/August and reading completely opposite information from the best time of the year to go to and not even recommended. I'll quote some websites: 1.Some people might say that our summer months (June, July, August) are the best time to visit Vietnam. Unusually for Asia the weather in central Vietnam is likely to be sunny and clear during this time, and although there may be short downpours in the south and north, many people see no rain ...

Con Dao or Phu Quoc (high season January)

Posted by Foolslena on 27/6/2013 at 09:56

I know this question has been asked before, but post seem a bit outdated. What is the better place to visit, Phu Quoc or Con Dao (Con Son)? Phu Quoc best days seem to have past by, from what I read, all being very touristy and very expensive now it seems. Is their still any nice beach place away from Western food places and overpriced resorts (between 10-30 $US in high season) that you could recommend? Is its possible to go snorkeling in January? Con Dao sounds lovely, apart from what I read a ...

Perfume Pagoda, Tam Coc, Trang Anh: choosing between excursions from Hanoi

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 4/1/2014 at 14:22

We'll be in Hanoi mid-February and would value advice on the following questions about choosing between excursions from Hanoi. How does the river scenery compare on the boat trips to the Perfume Pagoda versus Tam Coc versus Trang Anh caves? We'd like some spectacular rock scenery. If you had to choose between these visits? Are there boat trips which include Tam Coc, Bich Dong and Bai Dinh Temple? I noticed web photos which showed Bai DinhTemple on a waterfront & I wondered if these places ...

Phu quoc island dreadful

Can someone tell me what is so special about this place? I've been here 2 days and it is probably the worst place I've visited in Vietnam. Dirty, muddy roads , lined with rundown expensive hotels which don't even have access to the beach. And the beaches- very ordinary. You'd be better off sticking to Hah Trang or Quy Nohn. This place sucks ...

Language classes or tutors in Vietnam?

It's my birthday in 2 days, and, sad though it may seem, I can think of nothing I'd like to do better than learn some of the lingo here in Vietnam. I'd really like to go to a class or tutor that somebody can recommend, hopefully for more than one session. Can anybody help? Even better would be to be able to get lessons or tutelage somewhere nearby my current location - the Mekong Delta, preferably in Can Tho? Any help greatfully received! ...

It seems Sinh Cafe = SinhTourist ( is highly recommended here as well as in some books. Yet they are missing in the series of Ha Long Bay article(s). Which National Park to visit in Vietnam?

Posted by cheeco on 17/11/2009 at 16:47

Hello everyone! I am just wondering which National Park is the best to visit in Vietnam? My husband and I are looking for best wildlife, easily accessible, and easiest to navigate (preferably with a guide). We are not big into hiking, nor do we have the equipment to be serious about it (running shoes only). 2 days would be fine. I have checked out these, and think they could be good, but looking for people to respond that have actually been to these places: Ba Be Bach Ma Ba Vi Phong ...

To book or not to book (in advance) and other questions

Posted by arundhati on 9/12/2013 at 03:34

My family and I are backpacking across mainland South East Asia this winter for about three weeks, of which we will spend about ten days in Vietnam between the 20th and 29th of December. I realise this is bang in the middle of the high tourist season, and had a few questions about accommodation, transport and weather: 1. A lot of travel guides suggest that it is a good idea to book accommodation in advance while traveling the country, but we wanted to wing it slightly, and (apart from the first ...
