Little scammers in VietNam plus a great shave

Posted by m4yb on 1/1/2013 at 02:52

These are no real big deal, but I just thought I would warn others who may fall for them: HOI AN: at the river end of the market, a woman came to me, offering me a pedicure for $1. I hesitated, she was quite insistent, I, naively, thought, what do I have to lose. She led me to a room in a back alley, removed my existing toe nailpolish, trimmed then got me to lie on this couch so she could trim my heels. She declared that my heels needed a lot of trimming, and said "maybe cost a little ...

What to expect when advance booking hotel in Hanoi

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 16/10/2013 at 17:13

I'm hoping soon to book a modest hotel room in Hanoi for 3 days - long in advance, since we're going there fairly soon after Tet. But will Hanoi hotels ask me to hand over debit card details in order to book? I won't use cards overseas for anything but ATMs and I usually bring $ cash for things like paying hotels. What is the norm in Vietnam for making hotel bookings like this? Grateful for any advice. ...

Vietnam and Cambodia - Conflicting Info

Posted by abs004 on 10/10/2013 at 18:19

Hello. It was recommended at another forum to post these questions here. After several hours of searching and finding conflicting info, I figure I could post several rapid fire questions that educated travelers could easily answer. Will be flying in/out of HCMC with bus trip to Siem Reap in middle. Here goes: 1) Vietnam Visa On Arrival seems like best/cheapest bet as will be landing around midnight and hopefully won't be too much of a wait. Total cost per person should be ~$15 (pre-approval le ...

Hanoi entertainment shutdown this weekend

Posted by travellingsarah on 7/10/2013 at 22:50

As you may know, revered General Vo Nguyen Giap died last week, aged 102. Due to the three days of national mourning in his memory, from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th October, all entertainment events will be cancelled. This is mandatory and includes the CAMA festival and Piknic Electronik. I am trying to find out whether bars will be closed as well and will update as soon as I can. Could be a quiet weekend in Hanoi! I'm not sure of the status elsewhere in Vietnam. ...

Noi Bai Airport public bus moved to new location

Posted by travworld on 3/10/2013 at 11:13

If arriving to Noi Bai airport in Hanoi , walk out side past to the taxi's turn right , walk past the 2 usd mini buses keep walking another 50 yards , you will see people standing , and waiting for the bus , the bus drivers only open the doors for about 15 seconds before pulling away , sometimes quicker . So be prepared to hop on , if you take the #17 it takes you very close to the hostels , if you take the #7 it takes you next to the Hanoi Zoo the fare price is 6,000 vnd or about 30 cents and ...

Good place in HCMC to meet other single foreigners/travelers?

Posted by Iilysium on 24/9/2013 at 01:43

I go to vietnam a lot to visit relatives but I am not viet-born. It can get boring after a few weeks with family. Frankly I am not very attracted to my own race. What's a good place to meet other single tourists/foreigner dudes? And not those places desperate men go to look for a local girl half their age to be a submissive wife. ...

Vietnam Cracking Down on Illegal Motorcycle Use

Posted by Geer1 on 18/9/2013 at 12:08

Daawgon just posted this in another thread but I figured it was worth putting in its own thread since it affects quite a few people. Everyone knows the hassle of having to get a Vietnamese license but now it seems like they might be cracking down more on the tourists that choose to ignore the laws. Hopefully as the article states they will figure out an easier way to allow tourists to legally ride motorcycles as it is a nice way to see parts of the country. ...

Tet Festival & Perfume Pagoda Festival - wise to visit at these dates?

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 10/9/2013 at 02:41

I'm noticing dates for the 2014 Tet Festival & & Perfume Pagoda Festival and am wondering whether these represent great opportunities or whether local celebrations make life too hard for a traveller. I'd welcome comment on each separately, so I can decide whether to pick travel dates. Re Tet, is this a time when transport comes to a standstill & hotels get all booked up? How long does it last? What are the cultural activities at the time, which would be good to witness? Re Perfume ...

We will only be in each place for a few days so drop in classes would be best, pricing doesn't matter too much however we are not planning on travelling in style haha. we are both ...

I wonder if it's best to stick to a region (north or south) or if it's ok to try and travel from one end to the other. If sticking to one area only, I need suggestions to wether visit north or south Vietnam. Thanks! ...
