Tet Festival & Perfume Pagoda Festival - wise to visit at these dates?

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 10/9/2013 at 02:41

I'm noticing dates for the 2014 Tet Festival & & Perfume Pagoda Festival and am wondering whether these represent great opportunities or whether local celebrations make life too hard for a traveller. I'd welcome comment on each separately, so I can decide whether to pick travel dates. Re Tet, is this a time when transport comes to a standstill & hotels get all booked up? How long does it last? What are the cultural activities at the time, which would be good to witness? Re Perfume ...

YOGA IN SOUTH EAST ASIA!

Posted by Rashida on 7/8/2013 at 00:33

Hello All! Me and a friend are planning our South East Asia adventures, leaving 1st of December 2013-until the end of February 2014. We are wanting to go to as many yoga classes as we can find in each of our destinations and are looking for some tips/suggestions/advice from those who have previously done this before! We will only be in each place for a few days so drop in classes would be best, pricing doesn't matter too much however we are not planning on travelling in style haha. we are both ...

Hi all, I am planning a 2 weeks family trip (4 adults) in vietnam in december, Xmas/New Year's time (couldn't take vacation at a different time). I wonder if it's best to stick to a region (north or south) or if it's ok to try and travel from one end to the other. If sticking to one area only, I need suggestions to wether visit north or south Vietnam. Thanks! ...

Hoi An flooding

Posted by somtam2000 on 18/9/2013 at 09:20

If you've got Hoi An in your travel plans over the next few days, perhaps slow down or reconsider. Courtesy of a tropical storm and some big tides the town is flooding. Here is our flooding advisory from this time last year. Also keep an eye on our Facebook page, where Burton Wheeler (a traveller I kicked around with recently in southern Thailand) is stranded and posting pics of the ever rising river. We'll also be updating the page with news reports and updates from our Hoi An writer (who w ...

Hi there, we are travelling in Southeast Asia, and in the next days we are going to cross the border between Cambodia and Vietnam. We'll arrive in Chau Doc , in the afternoon, but, really, i don't know if we wanto to stay in Chau Doc, i really preferr spend the night in Long Xuyen . I'm trying to search info about buses between these two cities but i can't. We don't want to travell with a tour operator, and spend 20 min there, and 30 there, and eat just in the restaurant. we are trying to read ...

Mekong Delta 4 days - suggestions?

Posted by arianna1511 on 8/9/2013 at 05:24

Hi I'm travelling alone to Vietnam in October and I'm planning to spend 4 nights/5 days in the Mekong Delta region. I'll arrive in Cat Tho on Wednesday at 15.45 and I have my flight back to Europe on Sunday at 18 from HCMC. I'd like to make the most of this time, with an eco-tourism approach to the delta (hiking, outdoors, supporting local initiatives, etc.). Ideally, I'd like to avoid crowds as much as possible, and take organized tours only when there's no other option. I have two specific ...

Weatherwise, what months for visiting both Hanoi and Hue?

During which months would it be good to visit both Hanoi and the area around Hue? We're trying to avoid extreme heat, rain and cold and most definitely the smog from spring crop fires. Are there any months which would suit both these areas? ...

searching for hotels in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City for family with 2 children

Posted by oncecalledfred on 9/9/2013 at 07:41

We are planning a 3 week trip to VN in April 14 and have 2 kids ages 6 and 9. Could anyone please commend hotels in Saigon. We're on a budget so looking at £30 or less per night. We don't expect 4* but looking at rooms with 2 double beds(english size double) as kids can share. I never know what single and double mean in VN (we've stayed in Hanoi and some hotels have given us twin room, which has 2 double beds, yet others are single twin so very confused). A reasonable breakfast would be ...

Best itinerary for halong cruise, 2 or 3 nights

Posted by gingerjoey on 9/9/2013 at 20:50

I am looking for advice on a good two or three night halong bay cruise, even with a night staying on Cat Ba, if that is possible. Ideally, I would like an itinerary that allows many stops to kayak, swim, and enjoy beach time. I don't want to spend the majority of the time sitting on the boat. Any advice would help, as it seems to be overwhelming on the internet. Thanks so much in advance! Christy ...

Places to snorkel in November? In northern half of Vietnam?

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 7/9/2013 at 13:28

We're trying to plan our first holiday in Vietnam and would be very grateful for advice on a couple of questions. We were thinking of going this November. We're seeking a sort of 2 /1 mix of cultural and beach holiday. We've got plenty of places in mind for the former - Hanoi and environs, then to Laos for Luang Prabang, then back to Vietnam for Hue and Hoi An and back to Hanoi. But where in November would be suitable for the beach side of the holiday, which didn't mean travelling any fur ...

3 weeks in October, trying to plan it out.

Posted by Blackartemis on 17/7/2013 at 07:33

Ok, so I am a bit overwhelmed with all the places to go and things to see, so I have decided to plan it out in advance. At this time I have no real plans and I will be reading and taking suggestions and fine tuning it as I go. About me: 31yr old male traveling solo from about Sept 30 to Oct 19th Been living in Thailand for 5+ of the last 8 years and even though I make a decent salary here, I am traveling cheap to accommodate 2 other trips this year. Reasons for going to Vietnam: Scenery, templ ...

8 days in the south with 6-year-old

Posted by Lackadaisi on 7/9/2013 at 15:36

We are going to be in Southern Vietnam for eight days in the beginning of January, and I would greatly appreciate itinerary assistance. My husband and I will be traveling with our well-travelled, easy going six-year-old girl. We will have just spent a week in a very chill, quiet Thai beach with Thai relatives, so we are not looking for beach time and we don't need to cater to the child's whim too much. Then again, we want to keep her involved. We generally travel pretty independently and spa ...

2nd hand clothing in Saigon

Posted by kuidaore on 5/9/2013 at 14:09

Hello, While living in Northeast Thailand, I enjoyed purchasing second hand clothing (generally imported from the US) from vendors at weekly night markets - they were very common, usually a half dozen or more "shops" - selling most items for a buck or two (30-60 baht) ... I would like to know if anyone has seen such offerings in Saigon? Thanks ...

alternatives to Sapa

Posted by circcirc on 15/12/2010 at 19:28

I'm planning a trip to Vietnam next march and I'm in the planning stage. I'm going to spend some time in the northwest and I'm looking for recommendations. Sapa seems like the obvious and popular choice, but I'm not sure I want to spend time there. From what I have read it sounds very touristy. I live in a touristy part of my own city and find it rather tiresome. I would like to get away from the typical backpacker trail as much as possible while in Vietnam. What are some other good places in ...

Ha Giang province - restricted areas?

I'm planning a bike trip from Ha Noi to Mai Chau, Dien Bien, Sa Pa, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Ba Be NP, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Cam Pha, Ha Long, Ha Noi. My problem is with the Ha Giang to Cao Bang section. I want to travel due north from Ha Giang, through Tam Son, Yen Minh, Meo Vac, Bao Lac, Ba Be NP, and on to Cao Bang. There are several places of interest close to the China border, but it seems some of them are restricted by the police at Ha Giang. I can't find any definitive info ...
