Advice on Itinerary- 7 days travel Saigon to Hanoi

Posted by raineong on 26/3/2013 at 01:20

Hi all! This is my first post here on travel fish My friend and I (both girls) will be travelling up from Saigon to Hanoi in May (Yay! Can't wait) and this will be kind of our first 'backpacking' trip. I've read through some of the threads (there are too many!) of advice provided to other travellers and got a little confused and kind of worried. I think our timeline is really tight, considering we only have 7 days to generically cover the places we would like to. Please find the very brief ...

Halong Bay for late 20s who want to have a laugh but maybe too old for a booze cruse!

Posted by MissBanana on 3/4/2013 at 06:35

Hello Any advice here would be much appreciated: around 4-5 mid to late 20s group want to go to Halong Bay and have to go this weekend as some are flying home on Tuesday. I've had a look at a few tours I heard about and feel very confused! I think we're a bit too old and "over it" when it comes to the Castaway that Hanoi Backpackers offer (also it's expensive) But don't want to end up on a couples tour! We like a drink or two, but want to enjoy Halong Bay - not just get drunk there ...

Posted by Hungrytraveller on 27/3/2013 at 04:01

Hi, I'm crossing into Cambodia from Chau Doc in a few days and don't have any US dollars to pay for the visa. I've heads its possible to pay in Dong but is much more expensive. Does anyone know where I can buy some US dollars? I'm currently in Can Tho. None of the jewellery places here can help, and the banks will only buy dollars, not sell. ...

Bac Ha

Posted by Adrianandsue51 on 1/4/2013 at 00:29

Went to Bac Ha for the Sunday markets and chanced across a tiny restaurant serving genuine rice noodle meal in a clean & tidy environment. It didn't look much but food was great. No English spoken but just point & choose. Lovely friendly people. It is called New Suavity on Na Co street, which is the street leading down to the Sunday markets. ...

Sapa trek August

Posted by Scully on 29/3/2013 at 07:41

I am planning on doing a trek around the Sapa region in August. Upon checking the weather for that time of the year, it is summer but appears to be at the end of the rain season. I'm happy for any feedback, recommendations on trekking, or not, this time of year. I am looking into a 2 day trek/homestay through Sapa O'Chau - any feedback there would also be greatly appreciated. ...

Crossing into Laos from Sapa

Posted by ElSpudo on 27/3/2013 at 06:23

Hi, Does anybody have recent experience with travel from Sapa to Dien Bien Phu and using the Tay Trang border crossing? I have been told to avoid the public bus if possible but am being quoted 300,000 dong for what I assume is private run minibus to Dien Bien Phu. Is the difference in price from the public bus really justified? Is there an ATM in Muang Khua which accept visa or mastercard, failing that a bank or reliable currency exchanger open on the weekends? May be worth me delaying the ...

Flying Vietnam Air Hanoi - Luang Prabang. Booked tickets a month ago for a 9:15-11:20 flight for 5 pp on 31/3. They confirmed the flights by sending me a schedule and have just received a new schedule where they've shunted us onto a later flight at 12:10. Can they do that??!! Should I just ignore and arrive on time for the earlier flight or would I be wasting my time? ...

Volunteering in Vietnam

Posted by Benno on 21/2/2013 at 02:58

Hello Everyone, My partner and I are wanting to do volunteer work in Vietnam as part of a trip we are planning this year. I have looked on this forum and seen the 2010 post but nothing updated and the website for the expats is not working. We don't want to be stung US$2500 each to do 3 week volunteering through an 'organisation' with an unknown amount going to the actual recipient. Also for $5000 (for both) we can get flights and 3 weeks accommodation with money left over for food. The fees see ...

Halong bay tour for solo 23 year old

Posted by elysek on 14/8/2012 at 20:54

I will be in Hanoi in a few days and wanted to do a three night halong bay tour. I really want to make sure I don't book something that is going to be all families or couples so I was looking at the cruise through my hostel (Hanoi backpackers). The only problem is that it seems to be quite a bit more expensive and I'm not entirely interested in a complete booze fest. Does anyone have any recommendations about where to book a good tour, for a mid-range price that is likely to have people around ...

how to avoid packages tours and cruises on a budget in north vietnam

Hello! I'm traveling to Vietnam in a few weeks from northern laos and looking for some help on itinerary. I'm a nature lover, and hoping to take in views of the mountains as well as lots of karst scenery. The pancake trail would lead me through Sapa, hallong bay, and Hanoi... I'd really like to get off the beaten path, towards cheaper and less tourists tours. I'm interested in independent treks, kayaking, caving, etc. No over priced noisy tours is the goal. Suggestions For Vietnam

Posted by chrisb4 on 1/3/2013 at 04:07

Hi everyone, I'm planning a backpacking trip across Vietnam for three months from June to August this year. My main query is, given the time period I plan to travel, where would be the best places to go in regards to weather? Also, I would like to visit some neighbouring countries also, again, which countries would people recommend in terms of weather during that time period? And also, any tips or suggestions or just ideas that people may have are always welcome! Thankyou, Chris ...

5 days in Hanoi - which excursion?

Posted by cpelser on 27/2/2013 at 10:14

Hi guys. We'll be in Hanoi for 5 days from the 9th of March. We'd like to do something from there (I don't like cities much) What can we do from here? Halong Bay? Cat Ba? (Speed Ferry from Halong city + one day halong bay + maybe some motorbiking around Cat Ba) Sapa? (Do we have enough time?) I'm leaning towards Halong bay, because of time. Can we fit Sapa? I'm worried about Halong Bay's dodgy tours.. We'll also spend 5 days in Hoi An (from where we'll do a 2/3 day motorbike tour) ...
