Vietnam in 8 days with 3 kids and grandparents

Posted by jlaubrey on 4/6/2012 at 02:02

We are planning a trip to Vietnam the first week of October 2012. We will have 8 full days in the country. My husband and I will have our three children (ages 9, 7 and 5) as well as my parents (healthy). Right now I am trying to decide which part of the country to focus on. It will either be the North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, ??) or South Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, ??) I would like to know which region would be most kid friendly? They can only see so many museums, etc. I wo ...

Anyone want to bike through Vietnam?

Posted by Ardo on 25/5/2012 at 02:51

Hi, I'm in Hanoi at the moment and plan to get a bike here and ride all the way through Vietnam, and maybe some of Cambodia. Since I'm traveling alone I only really want to do it if I can find someone to join me, at least for the first part of the journey towards Hue. I have a decent Vietnamese contact to get a good price on bikes, but have also met a couple travelers here sellng bikes that we could test out. I'm going to Halong Bay tomorrow for 2 nights, and will be back in Hanoi on the 28th ...

Great forum! Thanks for the help so far!!! Nice, attractive rail journeys?

Posted by johnhogg on 4/6/2012 at 05:21

Hi all! Just doing my research into my first trip to Vietnam, then onto Cambodia... And wanted to thank everyone here for what seems to be a great community of people honestly helping each other! I guess I have bad experiences from certain other forums when organising my several Thailand trips that a place like this seems impossible. I haven't read any negative posts in 2 weeks of lurking! I've already got a healp of great ideas and and when I learn a bit more about SE Asia I'll join you in hel ...

Bad experience at Half Man half noodle in Ha Noi

Posted by Guydj56 on 1/6/2012 at 11:08

Just an FYI. Currently sitting in the half man half noodle bar in Ha Noi and despite travelfish's great reviews of it, it was not at all what it is cracked up to be. First, the music was terrible. We are talking dub step. Almost the whole night. Secondly, lots of cigarette smoke. If you are not a fan, stay away. Finally, couldn't find the special coconut cocktails on the menu and bartender had no idea what they were. Ordered French fries and they were by far one of the worst French fries I've ha ...

Motorbiking from Saigon to Can Tho

Posted by hallf_brick on 1/6/2012 at 18:32

We're in Saigon at the end of July and are planning on Motorbiking from Saigon to Can Tho. Has anyone done this trip? From what I can tell it takes around 4 hours, I guess on highway 1A. Are there better roads to take than the motorway though? How easy is it to get lost if you stray from the motorway? ...

Mecong Delta trips from My Tho, any advice?

Posted by HanoiMargarita on 23/5/2012 at 13:58

I was wondering if anyone tried trips from My Tho and how much it was. One local guy is offering a trip with homestay 2n/3d for about $100 but I am not sure if this is a good price and good place to start exploring MD. I am not limited in time. Thanks a lot. ...

Luggage Storage in HCMC

Posted by eliseljh on 21/5/2012 at 10:50

Hi, I searched for posts on luggage storage cost in TSN International Airport, but the closest cost estimation I can find is $4 per bag/locker, and I'm not sure if it's per day or per hour (I know it's a little ridiculous for $4/hr). Anyone has any idea? I need it for less than 1 day. ...

Train Station to Airport

Posted by aik_yong2002 on 8/5/2012 at 04:01

We plan to take the train from SAPA to Hanoi and depart to Kuala Lumpur at the same day. The train arrives to Hanoi about 06:00Am (some websites say-05:00Am or even 04:35AM) and the flight from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur departs on 09:00AM - Do we have enough time? Is it safe? How to get to airport from there? How much and how long is the taxi from the train station to airport? Thanks ...

Sapa to Dien Bien Phu and on to Laos

Posted by crisaniaf on 3/12/2008 at 21:39

I am currently in Sapa and intend to leave on Saturday morning, stay overnight in DBP and catch the 5.30am Sunday bus to cross into Laos via Tay Trang. What I am having real problems finding out about here are the local buses to DBP from Sapa, where they leave from, on which days and times and how much I should pay for the trip. Please if anyone has made this trip recently avoiding the tour offices prices for "minibuses" to DBP let me know any information you have. So far I think I have establis ...

South Central Vietnam itinerary, please help.

Posted by HanoiMargarita on 6/5/2012 at 00:46

Hi guys, I am currently in Hoi An , which I don't mind as I like it here, but not sure where to go from Hoi An. I am not much into big cities, hated Bangkok and Hanoi, and love countryside, mountains, villages, beaches, trekking, walking, etc. Really enjoyed my ride from Hue to Danang and back. If anyone could suggest itinerary from Hoi An to Southern Vietnam (and then to Cambodia). I know I will be going to Mecong Delta at some point, but before that I should decide on one-two spots on my way ...

To women travelling alone in Northern Vietnam

Posted by HanoiMargarita on 3/5/2012 at 11:02

Just to share my experience. I have been travelling by myself for quite a while to different countries, but never felt as unsafe as I did in Northern Vietnam ( Hanoi , Lao Cai , Halong City, Cat Ba). A few suggestions to other women travelling in Northern Vietnam: 1. do not wear clothes that are very different from the locals in style or/and colors, you will become a target even faster than in 'normal' clothes (happened to me in Hanoi). 2. do not ever take a sit in transport until you agree on p ...

Visit Ham Rong Mountain in Sapa - a wonderful place

Posted by HanoiMargarita on 4/5/2012 at 12:25

I found this place by accident and was surprised that it wasn't mentioned anywhere on trip adviser or lonelyplanet. It is really worth to visit. A garden, local performance, the Love cave, and my favorite one - the cloud yard, just a few things of many you will find there. A map they will give you with a ticket (70.000 dong) is not the best, and there are not many directions in the resort, but this is what makes your adventure. Definitely recommended. ...

Cat Ba warning: avoid Hoang Gia Minh hotel and trips from Mr. Zoom

Posted by HanoiMargarita on 2/5/2012 at 15:50

I spent four days in Cat Ba and want to warn other people so they may avoid mistakes I did. First, if possible avoid Hoang Gia Minh hotel, 18 Duron Nui Ngoc, which is across and a bit up from Mr. Zoom restaurant. The rooms at the hotel are big and relatively clean (but you may have a couple of huge cockroaches running in the room and on your bed) and the price is good, but you might have an everyday headache from the guys at the reception desk. I do not even mention that they want you to tell th ...

Vietnam and Laos 5th-30th May!

Posted by YY1884 on 28/4/2012 at 17:51

Hi Travelfish members, I'm leaving for Hanoi on Friday from New Zealand and have a question about: * Organising a visa for Laos in Vietnam (Hanoi) - what is the best way of doing this with no set itinerary i.e. probably won't have a flight ticket/proof of departure from Laos when I enter - is this an impossibility? I'd also like feedback on my 'itinerary' which is largely open. This will be my first time in this part of SE Asia. Previously I spent a month traveling around Bali in 2004 ...

Dalat or Mui Ne

I am in Saigon and will be heading north in a day or 2. Still deciding between dalat and mui ne before heading to nha trang. Don't have time to go to both mui ne and dalat. Heard right now wasn't the ideal season for kite surfing or wind surfing and am not really the type to just lounge on the beach. Has anyone been at mui ne in june or recently? What was the weather like? Also was interested in the hardy dalat canyoning tours in dalat. Has anyone used this company? Any opinions on which place i ...
