Hoi An bike tours, Off the beaten path.

Posted by aslocran on 21/2/2008 at 13:31

There are two or three groups offering both short and long haul bike trips in the back country around Hoi An. The Sleepy Gecko bar and the Light House offer custom tours of various lengths through the adjacent islands of Cam Kim etc. These tours can last from a couple of hours to all day and prices vary depending on length of tour and which company you pick. But... some of the back country is amazingly beautiful and there are some spectacular Monkey (bamboo) bridges in the area that are a t ...

Travel Ideas and Advice

Posted by Geer1 on 14/9/2012 at 12:31

Hi, I am currently planning a trip through SEA and have found a bunch of good information on this site. Was just hoping people could review my rough plans so far and see if there is anything I should add, not bother with etc. My plan is to fly into Hanoi and then travel down the coast via train, bus etc to Ho Chi Minh City and then up into Cambodia. Some of the sights I plan on trying to see in between are Ha Long Bay, DMZ, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City and then the Me ...

New to Vietnam! Would Love Some Advice!

Posted by KatieK on 29/5/2012 at 00:51

Hello all! I've recently received a grant to teach English in Vietnam for a year. I don't know what city I'll be placed in yet, but it will definitely be a big-ish one as I'll be teaching at a university. I am so thrilled to be moving, and have always been in love with Vietnam from afar, but I worry that I'll have a hard time making friends! I'm a fairly outgoing 24 year old American with poor but improving skill in Vietnamese, and while I suppose it would be nice to make friends who also speak ...

New Years Day &Bus Services

Posted by ashnee on 3/9/2012 at 08:19

Hi I understand that while 1 January is a public holiday in Vietnam many services still operate. Does this mean that normal bus services remain unaffected? I will be travelling in the Mekong Delta in December just before the New Year. I originally planned to travel by bus to HCMC on 31 December for 2 days before getting a flight to Con Dao Islands on 2 January. However, now I am thinking of extending my stay in the Mekong by a further day to allow for a small side trip to Phnom Penh. This wo ...

Ha Giang and area

Posted by heddenswest on 11/9/2011 at 19:32

Hello, We are two independent and budget travelers heading to northern Vietnam around September 16th. As a last minute decision we've become obsessed with the idea of heading to Ha Giang as independently as possible, recognizing the need for permits and guides. We have booked our train ticket to Lao Cai and will arrive there on the 16th. As we understand from the research we've done on this site, LP thorntree forum, and other reading, we can catch an 8 hour local bus to Ha Giang from Lao Ca ...

Ha Giang vs. Sapa

Posted by junebug on 25/2/2012 at 07:43

Hello! I've been reading this forum with interest as we plan out trip for next fall. We are planning for ~3 weeks in Vietnam (perhaps 3 days in Siem Reap/Angor Wat as well). I will likely ask for advice on our entire itinerary at a later date, but for now was hoping to get some opinions on travelling in the north. We are considering Sapa , as many do, but are also intrigued by Ha Giang and the surrounding area (e.g., Dong Van). Sapa seems "easier" to arrange independently (can take a ...

Vietnam/Cambodia 10 nights

Posted by andrewmasca on 9/8/2012 at 18:16

hi, i've managed to (i think) persuade my gf to go to vietnam and cambodia (never been before), i prefer the whole tourist and seeing the world sort of things as opposed to sitting down all day on a beach. I figure i should at least please my gf's idea of a holiday and incorporate a beach based part of the holiday. I've been looking at spending 3 or 4 days in the Siem Reap area (Lin Ratank hotel) and the rest on Phu Quol Island, from what i can gather is that you have to get a flight from (Ho ...

Any issues being Gay in South East Asia?

Posted by AlexBCN on 27/3/2010 at 16:04

Hi, We have finally found some time with my partner to travel to South East Asia. Thanks to this website, we have decided the route. However, I was wondering how tolerant is Asia with gays and whether is better to book a two beds room in hostels. We don't normally show that much affection in the street so the main issue would really be when talking to the locals and booking room. I havent seen any posting about it, so any comments, exerience would be much appreciated. Many thanks ...

2nd sapa trip?

I took a tour to Sapa in a previous trip to Vietnam and did not enjoy it...maybe partially because I was with my ex-wife. However, I am returning to Vietnam and I seem to be the only person who did not enjoy Sapa as I hear glowing reviews on it from many travelers. Does anyone have a extra ordinary tour company they would recommend for my 2nd attempt in SAPA? ...

Hello all, I am in the beginning stages of planning my 1st trip to Asia, I have 5 weeks beginning mid February. I have a list of places I would like to see in Vietnam, I was hoping I could get some feedback on my choices. Have I chosen "repetitive" destinations? Like too many islands etc? It will be my boyfriend and I traveling, we are in our early 30's, enjoy nature, beaches, good food, budget accommodations (but no dorms), and DESPISE over tourist-ed areas. I understand I will be ...

Withdraw large amounts of money at bank counter, not ATM

Hello everyone, I am planning to travel in Vietnam soon. I would like to avoid the fees associated with withdrawing from an ATM in Vietnam. Is it possible to withdraw a larger amount money at the foriegn exchange counter INSIDE a larger branch of a bank in a large city USING my Canadian bank atm card or Canadian Visa credit card? I am thinking around 8,000,000 dong. I would appreciate any information on this possibility. Thanks Neil ...
