Visas and border crossings forum

Posted by xan310 on 19/1/2012 at 09:04

I just found out by calling the Chinese embassy in the country I am visiting (Spain) that if I want to apply for a chinese visa here I either have to be a citizen of Spain or a legal resident. They told me if you're not a citizen or legal resident of the country where you are applying for a visa they would not accept the application, at least these are the rules in Spain. They told me the only way to apply is to send my passport back to my home country or legal residency and have someone apply f ...

Arriving in Thailand without a booking for onward travel

Posted by clairenz on 25/12/2011 at 11:54

Hi there, My boyfriend and I are both New Zealanders, and will be flying from Kathmandu to Bangkok on the 31st of March 2012. We then plan on travelling north and crossing into Laos at the Chiang Khong/Huayxai border crossing. We are worried that because we do not have an onward flight booked out of Thailand within 30 days, that we will be refused the visa/boarding of our plane to Bangkok. Has anybody had experience of this recently? i.e. flying into Thailand without onward travel booked? I ha ...

Visa Clarification Questions...Thailand and Vietnam

Posted by sundevil556 on 24/1/2012 at 12:39

I will be flying into Hanoi in March from the US with the intention of traveling through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. I have no return flight home booked yet and do not intend to do so until I am in Asia. I have done extensive visa research and feel pretty well versed but still have a few questions. I plan on applying for the visa on arrival for Vietnam and then Laos and Cambodia seem pretty simple to obtain at border crossings so not worried there. However, Thailand is my main conc ...

Shanghai to ANYWHERE in SE Asia

Posted by Kassassin on 12/1/2012 at 23:51

Hi, I got a REALLY cheap flight to Shanghai (PVG), but I would like to get to Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia. What is the cheapest possible way to do this? I posted this in the Visa section because I'd rather not have to buy a Chinese visa, and this is posted on the Chinese Consulate website "Citizens holding passports issued by the following nations are not required to obtain a visa given he or she transit by Shanghai and stay up to 48 hours" [US citizens included]. Any way t ...

Getting a visa for Burma (Myanmar) in Vientiane

Posted by KirstyB on 14/12/2011 at 05:51

Some up to date information on my recent experience …..... Getting to the Embassy The embassy is located about 7/8 kilometres from the centre (in the direction of the Friendship Bridge). If you take a tuk tuk, make sure the driver knows where he's going! A tuk tuk will charge up to 80,000 kip for a round trip and with hard bargaining 50,000 kip. Remember you'll need to do that twice – once to drop off and once to collect. Alternatively you can rent a bike for 10,000 kip and cycle there ...

Hi Everyone, firstly a great thankyou because if it wasnt for this website EVERYTHING would be so much more difficult! Me and my gf have been saving up for just over 2 years to go travelling for hopefully around 6 months, we are looking to go to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, after reading the visa section here we have decided rather than obtaining all our visas beforehand we will just obtain them all on arrival (except the Vietnamese which we believe will be best obtained in Bangkok) I ...

Visas and Vietnam Airlines

Posted by herbcorella on 12/11/2011 at 23:40

Recently, we went from Sydney to Vietnam, sort of 2 weeks there; on to Frankfurt and returned to Sydney (transiting through Vietnam). But, what a disaster. Sydney was very helpful and assured us that we need a visa for the stopover (going over) but no visa would be required for the trip home. Well, they should have told Germany, we flew business class and when we turned up for the return leg (Frankfurt - Hanoi - Saigon - Sydney) we were deenied boarding in Frankfurt. No visa, no boarding and ...

Laos to Cambodia border

Posted by jennakuz on 17/12/2011 at 19:55

Hi everyone, I will be travelling through Laos in April of next year and plan to go South to Si Phan Don in order to travel over land to Cambodia (this was recommended to me in another forum). After looking up border crossings from Laos to Cambodia this seems trickier than I imagined. The forums I was reading were quite confusing and i was wondering if anyone could simplify the easiest/quickest way to cross the border? It was saying to book it through a travel agent in what I was reading, but t ...

Crossing the Laos Border near Kontum

Posted by Phiddy on 12/12/2011 at 12:30

Hi, I had a meeting with an sta agent today who basically said that travelling in the south of Laos is really dodgy especially if you're on your own and that crossing the border near Kon Tum in Vietnam is not worth doing. I highly suspect he was just saying this so I would buy some kind of sta tour around Laos (which I didn't) but it has made me a little wary as this is an area I plan on visiting. Has anyone crossed this border recently? How long did it take you / did you have any major proble ...

I apologize if this is a question that has been asked before. I am planning to fly from the US to BKK in dec and stay in Thailand for a month on the "free visa" and then take the train down to Penang and apply for a thai tourist visa for two months . I don't have an air ticket out of Thailand as I'm planning to take the train to Cambodia. Does this seem like a feasible plan? Thanks! ...

Multi-passport travelling (Irish + South Africa)

Posted by jemjems on 24/11/2011 at 09:25

Hi, I have both an Irish and South African passport and I wondered if anyone had any experience travelling on two passports throughout Asia. The reason I ask is that I've left it quite late to apply for my vietnam visas, so I don't want to send off my Irish passport to the embassy and then not receive it back in time to fly home for christmas (since am living in the UK)! My plan was instead to send my rarely used SA passport to get any visas I'll need and in the meantime I can still travel in ...
