Eat and meet

You won’t go hungry in Thaton. Along with the usual tea and curry shops scattered in and around the market area there’s a small but good choice of restaurants.

First Mountain Cafe is a rather fancy spot set in a garden at the foot of the steps to Myathabate Pagoda — it wouldn’t look out of place in Bagan or Nyaungshwe, and we absolutely did not expect to find anything like a hazelnut latte frappe or blueberry smoothie in a town like Thaton. There’s an English-language menu and prices are very reasonable. A mohinga soup for example is just 700 kyat, fried rice 1,500 kyat and other made-to-order Sino-Burmese or Thai mains are around the 4,000 kyat mark. They even offer sandwiches for 1,500 to 2,500 kyat. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and while no alcohol is served they do allow you to bring in take-away if you insist on a beer with your curry.

A more classic-style Burmese restaurant and also very popular with locals is the Myanmar Thmey, directly opposite Blue Cloud Guesthouse on Hospital Road. This clean spot has a selection of good curries to choose from or fried rice or noodles cooked to order, with cold beers offered too. Main courses go for 1,500 to 2,000 kyat.

On the same road, opposite the new bank, you’ll find another good address, Free Style, which serves up real coffee, fresh juices, smoothies and a simple food selection. An English-language menu, friendly service and a choice of tables outdoors or in an air-con room make this a traveller-friendly spot.

Finally, if you have transport, then the in-house restaurant at Aung Thitsar gets very good reviews from locals. It is a little way out of town but serves up very good and reasonably priced Burmese and Sino-Burmese cooked to order dishes in a large outdoor restaurant.
